The usage of "trench" in VotG and "Trench" in FB has no (IMO) significance. They both refer to the trench/Trench that "connects" to the building.

I would also like to revise my opinion on whether there ought to be errata. The sentence you identified in VotG and FB is also in my 1st Ed. copy of RB (in one of the Scenario SSR). So, after years of adding it, suddenly (in RF) the Rulebook is clear enough without it? That would not be my first conclusion.
