OK. I see how to repair a damaged bridge. But is there any way to damage a bridge that you are defending so the enemy will have to repair it before using it?

Yes, you have two ways to do it. You can either target a bridge with your arty, or you can have your troops melee the bridge (use the "add melee" function off the dropdown menu to do this).

I must be missing something. If I try to melee I get no defending hex has been specified. If I try to shoot artillery from next to the bridge, I get Target hex is empty??????

To melee
1) Click on the bridge hex.
2) Go to the dropdown menu under "Melee" and choose "Begin Melee"
3) The melee symbol should appear above the bridge
4) Click on the attacking unit and hit "add to melee"
5) Resolve Melee
To bombard bridge:
1) Choose arty unit that has LOS on bridge.
2) Choose Fire mode.
3) Rightclick Bridge Hex.
(Note, the small bridges over creeks cannot be destroyed, only bridges that take up full hexes)
I just checked both of these in Corinth, to be sure my memory was right.

Just a fast clarification. To use arty, you have to manually select the arty unit, you can't attack a bridge through the Arty Fire list.
