BFP-133 Over the Hills v. Ernie Cameron; completed 2 of 7 ½ turns. German advance stymied by Poles.

East Flank: Polish platoon’s (8-0, MMG, 2x 4-5-7, & 2-3-7) mission to delay the German advance along the eastern board edge, while covering the flank of the western pillbox. The German advanced with a platoon (3x 4-6-7) supported by a 5-4-8 Assault Engineer (AE) Squad and commanded by an 8-1, slowly moved through the out-of-season orchard and up the hill, but in the process suffered a couple of squads breaking and the loss of at least 2x HS double breaking from fire from the MMG in the western pillbox. The Poles were then able extract the 8-0, MMG, 4-5-7 from the Pillbox and a 4-5-7 & 2-3-7 from trench back to the rear pillbox; while a 2-3-7 remained covering the withdraw (currently in Melee with a German HS).

Middle: Polish Observation Post, 2-3-7 HS set up in the (F15) woods with a dummy position in the adjacent (G16) woods. The German platoon (4x 4-6-7, 2x MMG) lead by a 9-1 laid down some ineffective fire on the Polish HS, finally moving into and eliminating the dummy position. The Polish HS broke and routed back to fight another day. But caught in a crossfire between the two MMG in the pillboxes, the platoon slowly moved forward as several pinned or were broken slowing the advance. In the distance the clanking track were heard and the trio of Bunker-busting 88mm halftrack rumbled on to the map, taking position to fire at the eastern pillbox. The trio of halftrack then bounded forward ascending the Level 1 hill next to the western pillbox and started to engage the west-rear pillbox.

West Flank: Polish platoon’s (7-0, MMG, 2x 4-5-7, 2x 2-3-7) mission to delay the German advance along the western board edge while covering the flank of the eastern pillbox. The German advanced with a platoon (3x 4-6-7) supported by a 5-4-8 AE squad and commanded by a 7-0, tentatively moved up to the Level 1 woods trying to flank the pillbox. Aided by AE Smoke, a pair of scout HS managed to clamour through the woods and ascend to the Level 1 woods engaging a Pinned Polish HS in Melee. Following up units were pinned or broken by HMGs in the rear pillboxes and forced to rout back from the (H9) woods whence they came. The Polish 7-0 and HS managed to withdraw back the (P17) woodline between the hills, while a HS remained in the pillbox manning the MMG.

Rear Area: The German sniper has been active behind frontline, breaking two Polish squads one which was manning the HMG in the western rear pillbox. The Polish HMGs and Light Mortar have opened fire engaging any targets of opportunity, managing to break and eliminating a HS. A 4-6-7 squad was initial broken by the west-rear HMG and then fired at by the east-rear HMG hoping to double break it on a 2MC. Germans’ roll = 2, resulting in Hero Creation and Battle-Hardening (D’OH!). A pair of Polish squads are entrenching along the forward slope of Hill 610.

Losses: Germans 3x 2-4-7 & 3x 2-3-7; Polish 1x 2-3-7

The Polish have managed to withdraw one of the two forward MMG positions and have also started to form an intermediate position in the low ground between the hills. The Germans have advanced up the hill along the western edge while the along the eastern edge, they regrouping.

BFP-133 Over the Hills v. Ernie Cameron; completed 3 ½ Turns, the dice gods are with the Germans and not the Poles.

East Side – Germans finally cleared the Poles off of Hill 523 in 5:1 Melee; but the Polish Sniper woke up, breaking a 5-4-8. Using the trench system, the Germans units start moved over top the hill and into the low ground behind it. All the while the Poles were ineptly firing at them.

Middle – Under the threat of the Polish 2-3-7 with MMG in the (D17) bunker, but that was short-lived as the first shot was a DR of 12; the lead German platoon (9-1, 4-6-7, 2-4-7, LMG) slowly advanced while keeping fire on Polish 8-1, HMG, & 2-3-7 in the western pillbox. The rear platoon (7-0, 4-6-7, 2x 2-4-7) was being rallied by the 7-0 when the awoken Polish sniper zeroed in on the platoon and wounding the 7-0.

West Side – The main effort of the Germans most likely heading for the bridge. The trio of halftrack mounting 88mm pounded the Polish HMG bunker breaking the 2-3-7 and finally forcing both it and the 8-1 to abandon the pillbox. Again, the dice gods were smiling on the Germans as the Polish MMG, HMG, & Lt. Mortars could not get ROF, and if they managed to a MC on the Germans, the Germans easily passed them. The one bright spot of the Poles, was the HMG with leader directing it in the bunker (M11) managed to catch a 7-0 and 4-6-7 climbing out of a trench (C18), 6FP -2 and rolled a 4, resulting 1KIA. The Polish 2-3-7 with Malf’d MMG in the (D17) bunker was dealt with in CC by German 4-6-7, 2-4-7, & 8-0.

The casualties are starting to even up: Germans 4x Squad-equivalents (8 CVP) v. Polish 2x squad-equivalent + 7-0 leader (5 CVP).

Just over half way through the game and the Germans are about half way to their objectives.

BFP-133 Over the Hills v. Ernie Cameron; the end is near.

West – The Germans have rolled over the HMG Bunker in L18 with a CH from a PB SFL Flak 18’s 88mm (36FP -3) result was a 3KIA and HMG destroyed. The Germans then diverted the majority of units to Hill 610 while leaving the capture of the bridge to a Hero, 4-6-7 w/LMG and a Flak 18. The Flak 18 was living on borrowed time, after BU and then surviving a CC with a 2-3-7 HS (HS rolled an 11), it attempted to roll on to the bridge but failed a 2FP -1 attack from the 8-1 and 2-3-7 crested in the gully and stun became STUN and soon to be Recalled.

Middle – The German moved units from the east and west flanks to converge on Hill 610; not before taking out 2 Polish squads in the foxholes. The Flak 18 atop the summit has a Malf’d MA and a 7-0, 5-4-8, 4-6-8, & 2-4-8 in/adjacent to it to secure the hill. Meanwhile another 5-4-8 w/DC, 4-6-7 with LMG, and 4-6-7 have closed with the Polish 2-3-7 HS in the orchard.

East – The Germans have finally cleared out the Polish HMG bunker (M11), taking out an 8-0, 2x 2-3-7, & 4-3-7 that manned the position in the process. The Poles have manned to break some German units back on Hill 523, but poor ROF have prevent the Polish HMG, MMG, & Lt Mortar from inflicting any losses. The Germans rout back, rally, and move forward a turn later – small consolation, as there would be twice as many Germans in the orchard.

Casualties have swung in favour of the Germans 6 of 17 (35%) squads lost v. Poles 5.5 of 11 (50%) squads lost; but the Poles have another 2.5 squads broken.

With Polish half of Turn 7 followed by German half of Turn 8 left, this game will come down to – “can the Poles hold the bridge?”

BFP-133 Over the Hills v. Ernie Cameron, a very close Polish victory.

The capture of Hill 610 was all but a done deal, although the lone Polish 2-3-7 HS in the out-season orchard made did do his part. In the last Polish MPh, he assault-moved up the hill, surviving 4 attack from the south (12+2, 12+2, 4+2 and 5+2) and two from the Germans in the foxhole (4+2 and 4+2) not even pinning. The HS then advanced in CC with the German 2-4-8 HS L13 foxhole in the hopes of winning and recapturing the VC hex. While the Polish HS did survive the first round of CC, it was eliminated in the second round of CC after it was broken by firebase on Hill 523. On the Germans’ last MPh, they closed up to capture Hill 610 and the game came down to the capturing of the bridge.

The German had only a Hero and a 4-6-7 w/ LMG adjacent to the bridge; the Flak was Recalled so a none player. During Polish Turn 6, the Poles manoeuvred to get three 2-3-7 HS adjacent to H18 on three different levels (I19) Level 1, (G19) Ground Level, and (H15) in the Gully under the bridge, with an 8-1 & 2-3-7 in F15 and a 4-5-7 in I15. The stage was set for the last German turn, first the Hero and LMG fired at the HS in I19 (8 +0) and broke the HS. Next the 4-6-7 fired at the 8-1 & 2-3-7 (4 +1) and got a 1MC, which both passed. The German then moved the SFL Flak 18 w/Malf’d MA on of Hill 610 down to the bridge drawing fire from the 8-1 + 2-3-7 (4FP +0) effect PTC, and then locking up the 2-3-7 in G19. So in the ensuing DFPh, the Polish 2-3-7 under the bridge fired (4+1) effect none, leaving the Polish 4-5-7 on the hill (4 +0) result 2MC. The Hero was wounded and the 4-6-7 squad broke. With no MMC to move into CC with the Polish 2-3-7 under the bridge and capture it by eliminating, thus ending it for the Germans.

In the short playing of the last turn, the Poles lost a 2-3-7 and German a 2-4-7; leaving the Poles with 3 squad-equivalents + 1 leader of 11 squads and 3 leaders; while the Germans lost 6 squad-equivalents of 17, with 2 of 3 SFL Flak 18 Recalled.

Thank you for the good game Ernie!
