You must be referring to When Trumpets Fade, saw that for the first time this week, seemed a bit "modern" to me(Attitudes etc.) but it conveyed the soldiers' feeling of hoplessness well.

Speaking of interesting projects, Quentin Tarantino's next project (post Kill Bill) is a WWII movie:

"Could you pass me the Thompson over there? It's the one that says "Bad Mother F*cker""

VINCENT: You know what they call a 25-lbr in France?

JULES: I dunno. "25-lbr"?

VINCENT: Nah, man, they got the metric system. They don't know what a pound is.

JULES: So what do they call it?

VINCENT: "Le 88-millimeter."

I dig the often-overlooked "Sahara."

Featuring the only M3 Lee tank in the Army with seven bogies.

Ba-dam-boom!

Thanks, folks, you've been great. Don't forget to tip your waitress.

the most incredible war movie ever made

Any body heard of the Sergei Bondarchuk's massive 1967 version of War and Peace?

It cost the Soviet government over $100 million at the time, involve over 10,000 extras (Soviet Army actually) and have some of the most graphic battle scenes ever film.

So graphic that in fact that numerous animal rights organizations boycotted the film due to the number of horses getting killed. It is by any definition the most lavish film ever and does Tolstoy proud. Can't wait to get my 5 disc set!

It's hard to say hey this was the best movie period, (though certainly BOB practically fits that category). Most definately Winter War is outstanding. As are the many other mentions made here. (Hey despite the little cottage industry that has arisen about criticzing SPR, it too is a great war movie.)

Anyone remember Objective Burma w/ Errol Flynn? That was a great WW2 movie. I used to make junior NCOs watch that movie just to get a sense of how things go wrong.

"group of sonderkommandos"
Are you talking Michael Caine in "The Eagle has landed?" Or are you talking about EinsatzGruppe, in which case you mean the excellent and powerful Russian flick "Come and See"? Though on second thought none of those are new movies.

I was utterly disgusted with Thin Red Line when it first came out, mostly because it is one of the greatest war novels ever written and was done such a resounding disservice by Mallick. THAT BEING SAID, all hail the advent of DVD. I have to agree that the section between Stein getting his warning order from the BC (Nolte did a great job as the BC), through the time after they (Cusak's crew) secure the hill (before the foolish mutual bayonet charge absurdity) is a great combat Vignette. It succinctly captures the Company Commander's dillema:, confusion from below (where are the enemy positions that are killing my men?) and intense pressure from above (Nolte urging the aggressive action while observing from far off in relative safety. Everything about the scene is well done.

Some of my favorites have already been listed. Though low on the combat quotient, I also like "The English Patient," "Europa, Europa," and yes, even "Swing Kids" -- more for the color and ethos of the times, if not always the reality.

I rented "Amen" recently. A leaden movie, but I like movies like this that try to grapple with the war from "the enemy's" perspective. Better in this regard is "The Young Lions," with Marlon Brando as that film's conflicted German. I appreciated "Stalingrad" for this reason, though I didn't feel like I was in Stalingrad the same way I felt I was in "Das Boot."

Also, has anyone seen "The Sorrow and the Pity"? My brother recommended this, but it's hard to find for rental, at least at Blockbuster.

Best

Cross of Iron - why isn't there a Steiner counter!

Wheels of Terror (you should read the Sven Hassel books of you can get em) - a bit like cross of iron

The eagle has landed (the village just looks like an ASL mapboard) - anyone done a scenario?

I actually like Thin Red Line. Especially the bit where the corp gets 2 grunts to advance, they both get shot, everything goes quiet, and the wind just blows the grass - really makes you glad you wern't there. I'll get the repring of CoB and Gung Ho because of this movie

Band of brothers - first few episodes.

The dirty dozen.

Battle of the bulge - Panzer song only - using the wrong tanks buggs me everytime i see it.

Battle of Britain

Enemy at the Gates - love the river crossing - hate the accents

All Quiet on the western front - so what if its WWI

Worst

Pearl Harbour - yawn

Bridge a remagen - but makes a good asl scenario

Fav War flicks

I thought The Bridge at Remagen was pretty decent--But then it I saw it as a teen agers many eons ago.;)

How about these for good war flicks

Is Paris Burning?
Pork Chop Hill
Glory
Full Metal Jacket
Casablanca
Gudacanal Diary--Some great scenes, especially the 3 marines
stranded on a beach with an island full of Japanese troops in front of them.

Haven't seen to Hell and Back--about Audie Murphy--Any good?

Also, saw this foriegn film when I was a kid.. About some Polish(?) paristans/refugees fighting Germans. One scene they are assualting a german position at night--One tough paristan crawling under the lee of a machine gun nest grabs the firing gun barrel of a MG 42 with his bare hands!--Ouch! I especially remember that on all the hand s they had to screw a cap off first before arming them. The final scene towards the end is when the Germans were poking shafts in the ground to find hidden caves, and a man who was hiding with his son used his bare hand, bleeding , to hold the shaft to keep it from discovering his cave--Very tense moment to me as a 12 year old. Anybody know of it's title?

Interesting choice. I'd be curious to hear what you didn't like about it.

I've seen it a few times, and I quite like it. Granted, I haven't read much about Patton, so the movie might be historically inaccurate (besides the fact that the German tanks were poorly represented).

Maybe it was just George C. Scott.

Patton?

I loved Patton; I've lost track of how many times I watched it. And George C Scott was great (he won Best Actor for it, after all)

Best: Saving Private Ryan - I saw it just after my father (Pacific vet) died, it made me cry.

Worst: Castle Keep - it just stinks.

Castle Keep is definitely a strange movie.

Speaking personally, SPR has really lost its appeal to me after its initial impression. The truth is that, after the Omaha landings, the script is just bad and the cast, by and large, pretty unbelievable. The raid on the radar station makes no sense, other than to give Hanks' character a reason to tell his story. And Tom Hanks and Tom Sizemore are way too fat to have been Rangers for 3 years.

And TED DANSON as a paratrooper??? Sure...

SPR had some problems, but it was better than the great majority of war flicks. My favorite war flick scene is from Cross of Iron when the old Colonel rallies a squad of men and goes to meet his fate. Either that or from Hitler - The Last Ten Days when Hitler (Alec Gueniss [sp?]) says, "General Krebs, there can be only one thought at a time like this - NATIONAL SOCIALISM!" when any sane person would have been thinking of ways to get the heck out.

Have to agree with you there,The radar station scene annoys me,they've got a sniper, why not use him?Dumb. But saying that, Hanks and Spielberg did go on and make BOB,where all the mistakes of SPR were rectified.

best and worst war movies

Without doubt my top 5 are (in no particular order)
SPR
Band of brothers
Das boot
Cross of iron
Rats of tobruk ( an oldie and goldie)

Special mention:
ABTF
Longest day
Battle of britain
Cockleshell heroes (I just love the brits. commandos!! cool jumper and beanie)
Seargent york
Big blue sky - highly recommended

THE worst of all time:

Hamburger hill!!! bad characterisation/editing/storyline
The true story was that a general that had spent his career in a support role (Zeitz) Needed a combat command to get the credentials needed to go further up the ladder and (typically american) manages to have enough friends to be given command of the 101st airborne. He then sends them straight up a hill at a bunker complex of V.C.
END RESULT?
After a couple of days hard charging the U.S. gets a precious "body count" of about a dozen V.C. while having lost well over 2 hundred U.S. servicemen.(This battle lost the most americans in one day during the vietnam war and many attribute it to the eventual withdrawal of the U.S. forces.) This could have been a great movie about the politics of "career generals" and the stupidity of the "body count" theory in Vietnam but, instead ends up being a total waste. (just like the battle! - ironic!)

I agree with most folks on the best movies...

The worst I have ever seen however, I found in a collection of 4 WWII movie DVD pack for $10. It's called The Last Panzer, and is so bad that it is funny. The American GI's in the film are running around with CETME .308 rifles! No plot, lousy filmmaking. Really damn funny...
