dumb question:

How do I convert this file so that I can see the map in VASL?

Others may be able to explain this better, but I went saved it in VASL Boards folder. Then I right clicked on it and deleted the ".dat" from the file name. then I hit OK and it worked.

This is exactly right. Board files should not have an extension to the filename (".xxx"). Deleting the extension will work if the file is in fact a valid board file.
