The rebels are attempting to force Sheridan's right flank but this has been foiled by Negley's timely arrival to shore up the situation here.

Two brigades of Wood's 1st Division are massing at the Round Forest, ready to make a strong assault on the white rocks position. Rousseau still is trying to reform some routed units. Sheridan is holding firm and is causing dreadful loss with his artillery....really surprised that the rebel regiment taking a 98 man loss has not routed........highest casualty figure so far, inclusive of a regiment of infantry also firing.

Two rebel regiments, upon seeing Minty's cavalry, have pulled back and formed up to protect their guns. Minty has 2 cavalry regiments available, but unfortunately , one is disordered and I do not fancy charging 2 rebel regiments who are not disordered , especially where the numbers are mostly the same. Fortunately, during the confederate turn phase, two other rebel regiments routed together within line of sight of Minty's cavalry with lesser numbers, so the charge was made. The rebel position at Sinking Creek is loosening up and about to be broken. This is good news, as Walker's brigade of Fry's 3rd division can now be used in the assault in the woods and ultimately to move on Wayne's Hill. Again , a timely disposition and arrival.........the tide may be slowly turning , as long as Stevenson is not involved.............:OHNO:

I cannot edit or put in text information for fairly recent posts because of some bizarre 10080 minute ruling ............so
END OF AAR...............................cannot be bothered to contact the administrator every time I want to put in an extra word or change a spelling mistake only a few days earlier..........not too happy about the constraints of the new imaging system either....extra loss of clarity and contrast does not help things.

Stones River AAR terminated...................:argh:

General Stevenson's Division of four brigades has been in a reserve position covering the two main bridge approaches to Murfreesboro since 1.00pm. Bragg's caution on this day has been down to the vagaries of fate, ( a die roll of 1 ) , which is very good news for Rosecrans. Re-orders from Bragg cannot occur until 6.00pm. Stevenson has posted 3 brigades near the main bridge crossing point of the Stones river. Taylor's 4th brigade has moved north to the first bridge along the Lebanon turnpike as a caution, since rebel wounded and fleeing stragglers from Minty's cavalry attack have been spreading wild rumours of large bodies of federal cavalry operating in the northwest and bearing down on Murfreesboro from this direction.

Text for Screenshots........2.00 - 3.00pm.

s2.00pm
Zahm's dismounted cavalry are slowly pushing forward, more to ascertain what lies in front of them on this flank, rather than an attempt to take the offensive or take ground; the worry and threat of a wide flank rebel move is always a possibility but judging by the number of rebel regiments being deployed in the open, to the left, the threat cannot be too imposing. So far, all brigades of Mc Cook's wing are holding.

m2.00pm
Sheridan's right flank battery at the Brick Kiln is blowing gaping holes into nearby rebel regiments who refuse to roiut and keep holding their ground. Palmer's infantry are about ready to deploy into line and advance forward between the edges of the rebel line in the woods separated by open ground. Hascall's 1st brigade of Wood's division is still trying to melee the right flank of the rebel , " White Rocks " position but is taking telling loss in close quarter melee..

t2.00pm
Minty's cavalry brigade is chasing down routed rebel units while Van Clkeve's 2nd brigade moves south to add greater weight against the rebel position in the woods north of Wayne's Hill. Fyffe's 1st brigade is precariously placed without support but Price's 3rd brigade has rallied and Walkker's infantry are marching southwards, much to the relief of Capt Morton's Pioneer brigade who are elite troops and can hold their ground, even with flanks unsupported.

s2.20pm
Most of Johnson's 2nd division have broken and run apart from a couple of regiments from Baldwin's brigade. Their fragile state will now leave them as reserve troops. Negley's infantry are giving as good as they are getting and it is self evident that their deployment with McCook has altogether saved the right wing and of course Sheridan's flank; but talk of fortune at this stage is premature as the fat confederate lady has not sung yet and she is big and called, " Mrs Stevenson ".

m2.20pm
Again, Hascal's lead regiments are still unable to break the rebel flank at the " White Rocks ", but are whittling down the defenders. Federal artillery is firing non-stop all along the line to soften up the rebels but has achieved minimal routing among the confederates. Rosecran's great assault is about to begin, comprising 3 Union divisions against the rebel centre. Palmer's infantry are already attracting rebel gun fire but press on regardless, their attack being of vital import.

t2.20pm
The Federal position is being stabilised here. there does not seem to be any rebel re-inforcement from the direction of Murfreesboro, so Minty's cavalry can continue to mop up any rebel units who show themselves out in the open.

s2.40pm
McCook's wing has settled down into a firefight which for the moment is not giving either side an advantage. Rosecrans is happy just to hold the positional lines here, or more importantly, occupy rebel troops to their fronts, so they cannot reinforce the great Union assault on the centre.

m2.40pm
Two regiment's of Grose's 3rd brigade have wheeled quickly to the right and overrun 2 rebel batteries. this was in fact without direct orders as he was supposed to advance immediately forward and engage the rebel infantry regiments to his front, in support of the 1st brigade, but upoon seeingsuch a juicy target with no support infantry and the gunners being enshrouded in smoke , were completely taken by surprise.Hopefully Cruft's 1st brigade can take the firepower which will be unleashed upon himfrom two axes of attack. It seems that Bragg was wary of this hole in his lines and had positioned a brigade in the rear to maybe entice a Union assault. He may regret setting this trap if either side of this gap is exploited. One of Hascal's lead regiments has made a more successful melee asssault and has reduced the guns firing to two. Rousseau and Wood's are throwing their infantry lines forward.

t2.40pm
The rebel defensive line is becoming evident , giving the 2nd brigade a chance to flank and with Walker's fresh infantry approacing the centre, ready to open up a hole in tired rebel lines;things should swing comfortably on the Federal side. The Wayne's Hill position cannot be taken for at least an hour and a half' which is bad news for Wood's 1st division infantry and the central Union assault.

s3.00pm
General Johnson's 1st and 2nd brigades have broken under fire, taking Post's regiments with them. The gap at the Gresham house is unlikely to be exploited as the rebels cannot see through the trees and will probably think that it is a tactical withdrawal. Negley's division is being holed by 2 rebel gun batteries at medium distance and will be hard to dislodge from the open fields, so at least this position is relatively safe and of course, General Sheridan's baulwark position cannot be flanked.

m3.00pm
Rebel gun batteries all along the Union advance are taking a terrible toll of bluecoats. Union officers are desperately shouting orders above the clamour and din of battle. " Hold your line....Keep firing ! " Hascall's 1st brigade is unable to melee the rebel gun position at the white rocks as his lead regiments are disrupted. Union gun batteries are underperforming at the moment causing few losses amongst the rebels at the white rocks position. It will now deend on who breaks first. Rosecrans can only wait and see as he rides up and down in a small perimeter straining his eyes as he looks to the southeast for any rider with good news. the expected rider, however approaches from the rear. An adjutant from Rousseau's third brigade has presented himself. Rosecrans is informed that Starkweather's brigade is approaching and should arrive in 2 hours time.

t3.00pm
Most of Fyffe's men have turned tail except for one regiment which has moved quickly to support the federal gun battery. Walker's brigade is about to join the main fighting line and hopefully split the confederate defence in two. The rebel gun batteries have turned their guns to the southwest so as to shell the flank and rear of Hascall's union brigade as it assaults the rebel white rocks position.

Rebels are advancing towards the Asa Gresham house but not in too much strength; a lot of rallying needs to be done by Johnson.

Confederate artillery is becoming punishing all along the centre. Fortunately union routing here is very light, but that may change at any time. Who will break first.........and where ?

One of Hascall's regiments has broken and routed after being shelled from behind by the rebel guns on Wayne's Hill and to make matters worse, are running in the wrong direction along the river towards fresh confederate infantry. Fyffe's 1st brigade have all but run and the rebs are pushing strongly on the left. Ealker is meleeeing inconclusively, so is being stalled.

Firefights still going on at McCook's wing- the dismounted cavalry brigades are doing well, so McCook is reluctant to hold them back for the moment. Rebels have occupied the Asa Gresham house and are using windows and the landings to shoot at the Union infantry. Negley has already asked to advance and throw back the disjointed rebel line before him, but Rosecrans is biting the bullet of caution until Palmer attack has had it's outcome.

View attachment 37476

3.40pm

The battle in the centre is becoming stymied into a prolonged firefight with the effects of attrition weighing heavily on the Union side. Sheridan is moving some of his regiments forward to put pressure on the rebels in the woods before him who are being flanked by Grose's men. Some thing has to give somewhere. Rosecrans and me too, watch expectantly for some break in the rebel line. The only point of consolation is the fact that the Col.Chapin's 10th Wisconsin regiment have penetrated the white rocks position, but may not be able to hold onto this small advantage.
[ Note - You can build entrenchments and breastworks in the game - good job the rebs did not here].

View attachment 37477

3.40pm

Walker's brigade are slowly punching a hole in the rebel defence and the 2nd brigade is starting to flank and not bump into anyopposition, so maybe the rebels have routed. The rebel push on the left may be their undoing as Fyffe has regiments behind them now.

Negley's 2nd division is relentlessly being pounded by reb guns and with orders to hold position, can do nothing but watch the cannonballs slowly rip through their ranks demoralising what is for the most part a near fresh two brigades, itching for the fight. Johnson has finally ordered the withdrawal of his right back to the cemetery line, especially as more rebel units are moving forward to the Gresham house. Johnson has sent a rider to Rosecrans to request some artillery support, as even a single battery would make a marked difference.

View attachment 37487

4.00pm

The 97th Ohio regiment under Col Lane. has breached the white rocks entrenchment position. This is quite lucky as the rebel guns nearby have been silenced by firepower with all gunners being felled, apart from the badly wounded. The flank of this rebel position is about to be turned if a quick push can be made before the rebel regiments in the rear can react. A separate melee attack further up against a rebel gun position is still ongoing but with 2 breaches made; things are definitely improving. General Palmer has ordered Hazens brigade to stop supporting the central assault and join his advance which gas been approved by General Thomas. Grose's 3rd brigade is locked in a unremitting firefight with rebs in the woods who stubbornly refuse to withdraw, even with the support of some of Sheridan's regiments. There is some routing going on in Wood's division and hopefully the union line will hold for a bit longeras there is a faint whiff of reb steam running out.

View attachment 37488

4.00pm

Fyffe's 2nd brigade has reformed and engaging the reckless rebel units who are stuck in position against his infantry and one of Capt Morton's battalions, allowing the uncontested progress of Walker's men. The 82nd Indiana heading for the edge of the woods crashed into an unsuspecting limbered rebel gun battery which was taken with limited casualties. Van Cleve is sending 3 gun batteries southwards in expectation of being able to bombard the rebels whod do not wish to give their ground. Beatty's 1st brigade has some mopping up to do and hopefully the 3rd brigade will rally and march south to aid the situation. A rider from Minty's cavalry has just reported to Van Cleve that there are no rebel units moving along the thoroughfare to Murfreesboro, so he will hold the position blocking this route.

View attachment 37489

4.20pm

General Negley watches intently as stretcher bearers run back and forth carrying the wounded across the fields to the Blanton house. He is so distracted that he is startled by the sudden appearance of a dozen horses with Rosecrans at their head. " A sorry sight to see, Sir ! " he exclaims. Rosecrans coughs deeply and then spurs his horse next to Negley's. " If Sir, you have a justice to be made against the rebel guns before you; I suggest you do it now with both your brigades ! " .

4.20pm

A two column regimental assault by the 88th Indiana and 15th Kentucky of Rousseau's divisiont has breached the white rocks position, while Hascall's flank is getting stronger. This whole position should break soon. The rebel guns are still pounding Wood's division from Wayne's Hill, so General Crittenden sends an order to Van Cleve to take the position with all haste and necessity.

Unfortunately, most of Miller's regiments have broken under rebel fire and the order to advance did not go down too well. Negley can only make his attack with just over 50% strength.

Negley's 2nd brigade taking heavy loss from close range rebel guns. A late decision by the 21st Ohio to melee the gun battery before them met with surprising outcome. ( A near miracle ), which is the only good news in this assault by Negley's 2 brigades. The rebel positions before Johnson and his attached cavalry seem to have withdrawn. With light conditions gone down to 400 metres; difficult to know for certain.

View attachment 37545

Visibility is getting poor and so melee attacks are replacing firepower but are costly. A couple of Wood's regiments have walked into a secondary rebel entrenchment position with guns supporting on lower ground which will make the fighting carry on until darkness, at least. Routing is not so bad at the moment.

Hascall's infantry have been joined by Wagner's men in the attack on the left of the Stones river. Palmer's forward regiments can just about see a new rebel line of defence with guns being wheeled hurriedly into position. The Union forces here are tired and there is only a 20 minute curtain before darkness falls and so are reluctant to rush blindly forward against who knows what. An isolated rebel regiment has thrown down it's arms and surrendered to Scribner's brigade. Grose's 3rd Brigade is still trying to clear the woods to the southwest. General Wood's is still trying to rally fugitives who have had enough of the day's bloody business. Rosecrans is receiving reports of horrific casualties and fatigue and so does not give any orders to Roussea or Palmer or Wood's divisions to move forward, but stabilise their current positions.

Walker's men have rushed across the tributary stream of the Stones river hoping to flank one reb regiment but are met with a cascade of fire from the trees in front of them. Looks like the rebs are still in shape to fightbut are most likely covering the retreat of their guns and supply wagons. Fire still erupting from the Wayn's Hill position. Beatty;s 1st brigade has lost contact with the rebs before them and so will move cautiously forward into the open ground. Minty's cavalry are still holding their position.

Walker's brigade is still pushing forward aided by Beatty. Van Cleve is determined to take the Wayne's Hill position but will have to do it without Price or Fyffe , as their losses are severe and demoralisation has taken hold. Advance skirmishers can hear artillery horses in the distance , so maybe the rebs are giving up the position anyhow.

Night turns from 6.00pm are 1 hour long until dawn. The rebels have abondoned the Wayne's Hill position and the battle is just about over for today, except for occasional bumping into stragglers or rearguard units.

The Second Day.

View attachment 37711

Reports from divisional commanders to Rosecrans during the late evening have shown that losses have been quite severe. Rosecrans will have to be more directed in his attack or face further defeat. Bragg has the advantage now, if he chooses to defend behind the Stones river. A draw result for Rosecrans may even be out of reach...:(

View attachment 37712

6.00am

A cold , misty dawn greets in the New Year. Visibility is only 400 metres. Union positions have not changed much from the previous evening, except for the dismounted cavalry brigades of Zahm and Stanley, who have moved to the edge of the Gresham wood with no sighting of the enemy as yet.

View attachment 37713

6.00am

Again, union positioning is the same with little movement as night fell. Col. Starkweather's 3rd brigade arrived at the front line just before midnight; now increasing Rousseau's division to it's full complement of strength of 4 brigades. Rosecrans has ordered Wood's 1st division to support Van Cleve's 3rd on the other side of the Stones river, which they are due to cross over at first light. Rosecrans will give movement orders only when visibility improves, so there will be little movement for the next hour, when rebel positions are clearly visible.

Van Cleve has set up a coherent line with Walker's brigade in the wooded centre ready, in column, to move forward and flank to either left or right. Movement orders from Rosecrans are still awaited, but should be imminent with the arrival of of Wood's division. A small rebel formation has been sighted, so there may be more in the vicinity.

With visibility at 7000 metres, it is clear that the rebels have moved off during the night to the other side of the Stones river. Col.Starkweather's fresh 3rd brigade will move towards the main bridge to check if the woods before it are occupied.

Minty's cavalry on moving south on the main northern track to Murfreesboro have been stopped in their tracks by a rebel regiment and have been forced to dismount as it is uncertain whether this is a straggler unit or part of a larger force. Van Cleve has ordered Walker's brigade to move south against a rebel position at West Murfreesboro, after flushing the woods before them for a while. Fyffe's brigade will take no part in any further action due to heavy loss. The advance guard of Wood's 1st division is already arriving on Van Clev's left flank to give a northern assault on Murfreesboro more weight.

Definitely sighted a rebel battery which may not be able to get away; still unclear whether the large woods are clear of the enemy. Sheridan's 3rd division and Negley's 2nd will now comprise the left wing as Johnson and Davis' divisions are no longer offensive worthy and have poor morale anyhow. ( I try to play logically and historically as fighting until regiments are totally destroyed is for " muttley " players. Once you get a 60% loss rate - that should be considered as really severe. ) Obviously the rebels have an advantage in numbers as 6 of McCook's brigades and 1 of Van Cleve's are now not considered combat worthy by Rosecrans; especially in the offense. Bragg's force has taken appreciable loss but have 4 completely fresh brigades versus only 1 union. The only good news for Rosecrans is that the rebel left wing has become intermingled during the darkness and may not be able to adequately cover crossing points of the Stones river further down from Murfreesboro.

Col Starkweather's 3rd Brigade has been ordered to make an attack on the rebel lines beyond the Murfreesboro bridge. Unfortunately; they will have to stay in column to cross the bridge and will take opportunity fire from two rebel batteries and infantry support which may leave them disrupted and unable to melee. They really should have one third melee strength when disrupted , anyways. Casualties will be high but there is no other choice but a direct assault. the 4th brigade should cross by the Nashville pike and the railway bridge, when the rebel straggler is dealt with.

The 21st Wisconsin regiment have made a sudden rush in column formation over the bridge and have taken considerable opportunity fire in every hex advanced and then out of despearation have meleed and miraculously got a reasonable result. A second regiment moved over the bridge to the left side but was disrupted and so cannot melee followed by starkweather and a third while one of Beatty's regiments have made it through the woods and formed line, just over the bridge. Hopefully , they will not rout as they will probably be hit hard in the confederate turn. The 4th brigade is being stalled by the reb regiment before them which could have taken out the rebel artillery battery near the railway bridge. an attempt is being made to cross the Nashville pike but that too is being contested by a single rebel regiment. Looks like the next turn will be decisive. Union troops are in a tricky position where morale will make the big difference.

Two of J. Beatty's and three of Price's regiments have routed, mostly because they have walked into rebel fire in column formation. Price's brigade has already proved very shaky in combat. Wood's 1st division assault should open things up on this front but it is obvious that the rebels will not make it easy.
