A German HS is alone in a hex with an Abandoned British AFV. May he automatically eliminate the vehicle? Does it burn?

"11.52 CAPTURE OF VEHICLE IN CC: Infantry may not attempt to capture a manned AFV or a Motion/non-stopped vehicle (or its PRC), but may attempt to capture or eliminate an Abandoned AFV as per 21.2. An unarmed, stopped/non-Motion vehicle without Personnel Escort is captured instantly in any CCPh in which it is alone with opposing Infantry." [emphasis mine]

This would suggest that, yes, and it happens automatically. But, 21.2 makes no mention of 'elimination', just capture.

"21.2 VEHICLE: A vehicle can be captured only in the CCPh (11.52). An AFV can be captured only if Abandoned (D5.42). If there are no enemy Personnel in the Location with an Abandoned enemy AFV, it may be captured automatically by any Infantry unit in the same location at the end of a CCPh but Ambush is NA." [The rest of 21.2 is an "Otherwise...that speaks to what happens if there are enemy Personnel in the Location, and explains why there are CC DRM for "vs. Abandoned AFV" ]

What says the world?

Just guessing here but as an inherent crew can eliminate a vehicle in the course of Abandoning it (D5.411), maybe A11.52 just means "may attempt to capture, and once captured, eliminate, an Abandoned AFV, as per 21.2."

It doesn't really seem clear if the elimination is automatic or if the capturing unit wishes to eliminate it if a CC attack must be made. I would favor the latter. How else could you determine if it becomes a burning wreck?

Somewhat of a guess, but I would say that if you are alone with the vehicle you could either capture or eliminate it at your discretion.

The CC DRM vs abandoned vehicle is for when there are personal from both sides in the location and they try to kill/capture the vehicle instead of each other (or at least one side tries).

It's not very straightforward is it? I would think it should be automatic but as I indicated how do you determine if it is a burning wreck?

Realistically one would assume that grenades would have to be used to destroy an AFV which would mean that the wreck could burn. Interesting. The ASOP didn't offer any clarification either.

My guess (agreeing with Actionjick): You can capture it automatically, but not destroy it automatically. For destruction you must attempt a CC attack (-1 for no MG, -1 for Immobilized, -1 for CE OT/Abandoned) to destroy it. The DR determines if it burns.

However, if you capture it (and thus become the new inherent crew), you can then voluntarily abandon it in the next friendly MPh, destroying it per Russ's reference to:

D5.411 SELF-DESTRUCTION: Only an Inherent crew that voluntarily abandons a vehicle may turn it into a non-burning wreck or malfunction its weapon(s) as it leaves.
