Hi!
Thank you to the approximately 20 participants of CANCON 2023, the official Australian ASL tournament run in late January on the ‘long’ weekend of the Australia Day holiday. This is the 29th time in the tournament has been run in Canberra, the capital of Australia. The ASL tournament is a small part in a very large games tournament attended by several thousand people during the weekend.
For the ASL participants it was good to regather for this tournament after missing two years with the lockdowns. The group had a pub visit, a couple of shared meals at restaurants and made numerous purchases at various games stalls. In between these mandatory social activities, five ASL scenarios were played during the three-day tournament. Much fun was had by all.
As to the results:
Winner: Paul Seage (see attached picture)
Runner up: Richard Weiley
Third: Dave Wallace
State of origin: New South Wales
The scenarios played in 2023:
1st Rd: By Dawn’s Early Light (FT168) – US/German combined arm’s meeting engagement, late 1944
2nd Rd: Rudkin Riposte (DYO) – Russians tackling rearguard SS units, Kharkov, Ukraine, early 1943
3rd Rd: The Gin Drinker’s Line (DD099) – Japanese fighting the Indians in Hong Kong, late 1941
4th Rd: Grand Theft Kharkov (DYO) – Desperate SS units escape Kharkov via captured T34s, early 1943
5th Rd: Black Day in Hatten (HF1) – An early US counterattack in Hatten against the initial German incursion, early 1945
Regards,
