A DEFENDING Infantry unit already marked with a First Fire counter may Defensive First Fire again with its own FP and/or MG during that MPh provided that the target is not at a range greater than that to the close enemy unit, nor outside the firer's normal range.
Would that be any unit, broken or otherwise, or any unit (unconditional)?

Any unit is all it takes.

It is a time-honored tactic in ASL to move a unit close to a defender with the sole purpose of getting that defender to use Defensive First Fire against it; assuming that unit survives (even if broken), then the attacker may freely move other units as long as they don't get as close as the first one, without fear of a Subsequent First Fire attack from the same defender.

Also note that SFF may only be used within the Normal Range of the firer.

Giants? Well most are at least Extra Large, and if you stand on their shoulders look out for the glare of the florescent light off their pasty white bald heads... :twisted:

SK and ASL difference in the rule

SK rule does not account for:

armed / unarmed status and closest KEU;

so in SK it is the closest enemy unit regardless of status (broken / pinned / etc) whether in or out of LOS
