ASO 2021 is under way with a bit of friendly gaming for today as a preparation for the main event - arrivals include Mike McGrath, Jim Bishop, Magnus Rimwall, Thomas Harjo, Michal Sedlacko, Michael Hastrup-Leth and myself. The atmosphere is good, the new/temporary location is great and what an unusual feeling to play an ASO Tournament in the summer.

Looking forward to seeing more players arrive tomorrow :)

EDIT
The swedish Elite crew of Jens Thomander, Andreas Carlsson and Mathias Bergwall has arrived and are just chilling. Juan Santa Cruz is setting up to play against Michal Sedlacko.

2 rounds down
We're down to undefeated players. Depending on the outcomes of round 3 we could have the final tonight in round 4.

The remaining undefeated are:
Mike McGrath
Juan Santacruz
Jim Bishop
Kjetil Hogenhaug
Bo Siemsen

With a injury-forfeit of former Danish ASO winner Kenneth Knudsen the starting field was down to 19 players.

Mike always does something that surprises, especially in tactics. Every time you play him, probably learn something cool.

The ASO 2021 final took place saturday night. In a close fought battle Mike McGrath needed a bit of help from lady luck when Kjetil tried to make a hole in the world with his demo charge in a key position wooden building. Turned out the effect was little more than a loud knock on the door.

That means Mike McGrath has conquered Scandinavia by winning Scandinavian Open 2021.

While the remaining 18 players play for final positions here sunday morning we will have a "table of champions" where the newly crowned champion will play against the 2020 champion - Michael Hastrup-Leth.

EVERYBODY IS A WINNER AT 24TH EDITION OF SCANDINAVIAN OPEN
The organizers would like to thank the ever loyal sponsors – Trojan Games, Le Franc Tireur, MMP, Bounding Fire Productions and Lone Canuck publishing. We would also like to thanks all participants for being on their best behavior and contributing to the excellent atmosphere. We would also like to thank Juan Santacruz who spend hours designing an extra Trophy for the Tournament winner (A Churchill ASL Counter, 10*10 inches with a "miniature" tank.

We would also like to send a special thanks to Andreas Carlsson who generously donated his time and designed booklets for all 5 rounds with details on the scenarios, map, entry, setup-areas etc.

We had “just” 19 participants this year but we are hopeful that number will increase next year when we return with our 25th Edition and to our regular timeslot in the ASL-calender – the first weekend of march 2022. All participating players registered at least one win.

“Newcomer” Mike McGrath won the tournament won the individual tournament after going undefeated in the first 4 games. His opponent in the final game, Kjetil Høgenhaug, secured second place. On Sunday, 2020 champion Michael Hastrup-Leth and 2021 champion Mike Mcgrath had themselves a Silesian Interlude in which Michael came out on top.

The unofficial team tournament, the battle of nations, was also won by Team International ahead of Team Norway, Team Denmark and with Team Sweden in last place. Team International consisted of Mike McGrath, Jim Bishop, Michal Sedlacko and Juan Santacruz.

Results will be submitted to ASL-Ratings.org

It escapes me that a 1-0 player could play a 4-0 player on round 5, at least according to standard pairing system. But maybe it was a friendly?

We improvised the pairing of the final round with regards to Mike
He had already won the tournament on saturday night. He and Michael would like to play each other and since it would have no direct effect on the tournament standings we made that happen. Michael and I swapped position in the tournament to keep the numbers even.

Not the system I set up, though :)
I counted the number of wins and losses Team Sweden had against each of the other National Teams.

Like this:
  • Sweden won 4-3 vs Team Norway
  • Sweden lost 6-7 vs Team Denmark
  • Sweden lost 2-6 vs Team International
The other results were
  • Team Denmark lost 2-4 vs Team Norway
  • Team Denmark lost 1-3 vs Team International
  • Team Norway and Team International drew 1-1
Team International 2 Wins, 1 draw
Teams Norway 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss
Team Denmark 1 win, 2 losses (slightly better on tie breaker)
Team Sweden 1 win, 2 losses
