SSR 8(a) says “Each gun may set up using HIP (A12.34). [EXC. each gun does not automatically set up Emplaced; the crew must make an Entrenching Attempt to emplace their gun (C11.2-.3). Place a Non-Emplaced Gun counter (from CdG) on a gun that fails the emplacement attempt.];”

1) Must a gun make a successful Entrenching Attempt in order to set up HIP?

2) If the gun fails the attempt, can the owner note such on a side record and place the Non-Emplaced Gun counter on the gun after it has fired?

No, guns may set up using HIP. However, it must make an entrenching attempt to set up emplaced. See the concealment loss table for the difference between a HIP Gun not emplaced and a HIP gun emplaced.

Use a Non-Emplaced Counter from Croix de Guerre
