Waterloo from an issue of Strategy & Tactics magazine was my first experience of a war game, if I don't count Battleship. I won as the French because of a long shot attack that went my way. Amazing that I still remember that.

That first "experience " has a certain longevity, doesn't it.

Started out with 3R, Axis & Allies, Hitler's War, King Maker, Imperium Romanum, Air Force & Dauntless, D&D and Dragon Quest, Traveller, then SL and later ASL, Shogun (M&B), LOADS of Dawn Patrol, Guns of August, Gladiator, Battlewagon, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Pacific War, Battletech, Behind Enemy Lines (WWII RPG)...and there are a bunch I can't remember the names of.
I borrowed The Longest Day in '90 and set it up intending to play solo, but found there were missing counters so never got going.
Basically we played whatever anyone of our group bought or borrowed.

Game shops (actually usually comic shops) used to have a lot of interesting used games on the shelves in the late '80s early '90s, way more than I could afford or had friends interested in playing them.
Some I bought to play solo anyway.
That is where I got my first bundle of ASL stuff.

A lot of good times were had over the years..

Broadside, Dogfight, Hit the Beach. Milton Bradley games
I loved Broadside, it moved me to get Wooden Ships and Iron men back in the day, having Nelson's Victory bang it out vs the French flag ship was a thing of beauty! My entertainment in this hobby never ends, 58 years in it (I'll be 70 in 2 days) and I still have a ton of fun.

Is 3R Third Reich? Always wanted to play that especially after reading Mark Nixon's articles in The General.

France 1940 was the first AH game I can recall playing. That was in High School with my chess team buddies. After that it was Blitzkreig in the early Navy days.

Truth be told I was mainly preoccupied with chess from Junior High through High School so my actual wargaming didn't amount to much during that time.

After the Navy it was backgammon and then Panzer Leader. While looking for Panzer Leader opponents I met Dr. Marc and he introduced me to SL. Probably 1979. It was over then. Played several other games with Fish afterwards but SL/ASL was our focus.

In a way it still is. Perhaps out of focus but wtf.

I had a great local hobby shop nearby. Got into SL at an early age. Played with older gamers on Saturdays. When I turned 16 and could drive, we would drive to a large gaming center which had many lockable rooms so we could leave scenarios setup. Over the years, the hobby shop, gaming center all closed down. School, marriage, the Army, kids, kept me away for many years. When I got back into ASL after for 20+ years, had a group of local ASL players. Covid got me into VASL. Must say I don’t get PBEM, but FtF has been great fun. Increasing my play year by year.

......
Yep, that's it.
I've played quite a lot of 3R back then.

There were multiple AH games which I also had that used the same mapboard format, such as 3R, Guns of August, and Richtofen's War.
These were the same style as the mounted SL & ASL boards, and the strategy games used 4 maps laid out side by side.
If we didn't have a game planned in the near future I'd have a solo game set up in my room, they fit perfectly on the top of my dresser.
I had to have a game going on pretty much at all times. :)

We surely qualify as Grognards my friend, if you ever get on VAASL we can play all kinds of old school Avalaon Hill games there, not just ASL but anything from the 60s & 70s. I would love to roll dice with you, once you hit our age, lost opportunities are harder to get back, Vic.

I have been rolling low lately, damn, can't get much better than this, a very happy hobby grognard, Vic. 🎲🎲 Have Very Happy Holidays!!! πŸŽ„

Earned my stripes playing Chess, MB Broadsides/Battle Cry/Dogfight/Guadalcanal, and Stratego (my favorite), to name a few. Then progressed to Bulge '65, Kriegspiel, Gettysburg, and Panzerblitz. Eventually arrived at Squad Leader thanks to Vic Provost (you bastard! LOL).

Boardgames are part of my DNA now (which explains my strange appearance).

We played the eff outta Stratego. Lost one of the pieces so we just eliminated that piece from the other side and played on. Our own variant. The missing piece made it very interesting.

Also played a lot of the 3M Bookcase games. Stocks and Bonds, Feudal, Acquire. Good stuff. Chess team buddy Tom lived in the same apartment complex. His Mom and stepdad bought him all kind of games! Those were the days.

Not a wargame but they bought him Skittles. We almost made it a wargame. πŸ₯°

Yes indeed, this evil hobby dragged us both in, eh? We must have rolled a million dice 🎲🎲 since we started to play all kinds of games 40+ years ago together. Looking forward to more right after the Holidays. Happy Holidays Tom! πŸŽ„
