Hi.

Lets say, we only use hexrow A.

There's a crew with a MTR in A0.
A2, A3 and A4 are Grain.
There is a 2-level stone building with a squad on each level in A7.

If the MTR fires at the building, is the modifier for the squad at ground level +7 [+3 building, +3 grain, +1 1 building level above] and for the squad at first level +3 [building], thus possible hitting the upper squad while missing the lower one?

Now, if the LOS to the lower squad is blocked, it is still hit as long as the upper squad (which is the non-HIP in-LOS Unit hardest to hit) is hit. This seems weird, as it suggests the squad is easier to hit if you don't see it.

Bye ... ollo

First, the TEM doesn't affect the TH DR; it's used for the effects DR if a hit is secured.

NRBH, can't answer part about grain hindering TH for all or only ground level.

Oliver is correct, except for adding TEM as a TH DRM , and for the +1 per building level above DRM. Both of those are effect DRM when using the ATT, not TH DRM.

But you're right about the main point. In this case, the ground level unit is easier to hit when the Hindrance is +6 (blocked LOS) than when it is 1-5.

The relevant rule is the C3.33 exception saying: "... a mortar also hits all target-hex units that are out of its firer's (Spotter's, if one is being used; 9.3) LOS if that shot hit the non-hidden enemy target that currently was the hardest for it to hit (i.e., that received the highest net TH DRM for that shot)"

This rule applies when the ground level unit is out of LOS. If the Hindrance is only 1-5, a hit vs the unit is calculated normally, with the Hindrance as a TH DRM.

Note that this is only true when there is a non-HIP enemy target in LOS in that hex.

Ollo,
The example that accomanies C3.331 will answer this question for you. It has almost this specific situation which you describe. -- jim

..... Assuming the mortar retains its ROF - which it can do despite using the Area Target Type - it now Prep Fires on a building hex that contains one enemy squad apiece at the ground and upper levels plus a German OT AFV in bypass out of the mortar crew's LOS. The crew's LOS to the ground-level (only) squad is Hindered by a grainfield, which will modify the TH DR (Case R; 6.9) vs that enemy squad - but not vs the upper-level squad (3.4). Barring a CH, each squad hit will undergo a 2-FP IFT attack modified by the appropriate building TEM (B23.3; B23.32). If the ground-level squad is hit, the AFV will also undergo a 2-FP IFT attack as per 3.332 (with a -1 DRM for being OT; 1.55) despite being friendly to the firer.
As usual, Ole beats me to the answer :) -- jim
