Leader of the Wolf Pack by the Sangar-Las

The third of their " Leader " songs based on the tragic fates of some German brothers in WWII.

The story was told to one of the Sangar-Las by their father who served in WWII. He was a cook at a POW camp holding German prisoners. He heard the story from one of the POWs who was working in the mess hall.

The POW was the uncle of these brothers who followed the family tradition of military service. All the brothers met a tragic death during the war but none in actual combat. All related in some way to romantic interests. The uncle was constantly bemoaning the fact that his nephews had not died honorably in combat.

The story stuck with the GI and while reluctant to speak to his family about his wartime experiences he had to tell them of the sad and ironic fate of one German family.

The " B " side of their very popular song Leader of the Squad.

Leader of the PAK the backstory.

One of the brothers was a young officer assigned to a Pak 43. The young man fell in love with the fearsome weapon. It was a love that was only exceeded by his love for his sweetheart Hilda, the youngest daughter of an aristocratic Prussian general. When the general found out that his daughter was in love with a commoner he forced her to end the relationship.

When the young officer was told that their love could never be he sought solace in several bottles of schnapps. He went to the field where his beloved Pak 43 was hooked up to it's Sd.kfz 6 prime mover and proceeded to pour out his broken heart to the artillery piece.

A sudden heavy downpour of rain commenced and the drunken soldier crawled under the halftrack seeking shelter from the storm. He passed out lying under the vehicle and sometime during the night was crushed to death when the prime mover sank into the now rain soaked ground. He was found clutching a bottle of schnapps in one hand and the engagement ring meant for Hilda in the other.
