October 1,1941. 8:00 hrs.The Red Army has launched its first attacks on German lines in the area of Yelnya carrying forward their armored units in the area Volkovo-Yegorye trying to open a gap.Heavy red artillery fire support in all front.The 146th Tank Brigade hopes the arrival of the 144th Brigade of tanks to support their progress. Infantry units are moving westward in the area of northern Tokarevo.Red units around Zimnik attempt to open the front without success.

Yelnia sector

In southern Desna, the red units have attacked the front supported by the heavy artillery batteries, and leaving behind their trenches and fortified points trying assembling their forces to the north to support a larger offensive on the city of Desna.

Russian casualties: 290 men and 2 tanks.
German casualties: 77 men and 1 gun.

NESHEVO SECTOR.

Heavy artillery supports German defensive fire on soviet advanced units.
Some Bombing comes from Ju87 onto the armoured cars.The 2nd/146th tank Bde. has only 1 BT-5 car left.

Casualties after this encounter:
German: 225 men, 1 gun.
Russian: 885, 12 tanks.

At 10:00 pm Reports of casualties are as follows for the Russians: 1636 men and 12 armored vehicles.
The Germans have now 517 men and a gun.

The fighting continued throughout the front without major changes. The Russians are still taking too many casualties.

At 12:00 hrs for the German side the following units received orders to move:

292th Infantry Division.
183th Infantry Division.
263th Infantry Division.
This will reinforce the fortified German positions well as causing extensive damage to the red forces.

At this time the loss of the two sides reached the following numbers:

Russians 2808 men and 17 tanks.
German: 998 men and 1 cannon.

The Russian offensive continues ...

Will soon sunset, and the dangerous progress of Russian units of the 19th Rifle Division is close to the central Volkov where it appears that the City can not be defended for a long time.
The 183rd Infantry Division under General Deetling awaiting orders to retreat westward down the road to Balutino-Pervoye and leave town, or defend it until the end.
The other major decision is to move the artillery units of the 263rd Infantry Division under General Haeckel, located in Zmnik more toward the south to open fire on the Russian units that try to lead the way among the marshes of Volkov .

The report of losses is:
Russians 5736 men 12 guns and 23 tanks.
German: 1886 men and 6 guns.
