AAR: Torpedo Run [Spoiler Alert]
By Paul Bridge

After receiving our latest orders, I asked the Jimmy (First Lieutenant) to plot an estimated path from the last reported position to Jakarta. I planned to position the Oberon astride their Path of Intended Movement [PIM] at this point. If we were unable to intercept them from the front, I was dubious if we would be successful in a stern chase.

As we made transit southward, we periodically rose to periscope depth to 'sniff' the air for electronic transmissions with our Electronic Support Measures [ESM]. Two small patrol boats were discovered a fair distance away, but were not a threat to us. A pair of Gannet Maritime Patrol Aircraft [MPA] were also found during one of our Jack-in-the-box manoeuvres. These units were the most fearsome as they could strike without warning.

A supply vessel was found heading in the direction of Jakarta. I decided to investigate. We ran a Target Motion Analysis [TMA] and calculated a firing solution. While the fire-control team was 'polishing the cannonball' by refining their solution, Oberon moved closer to shorten the run on her torpedoes. Just as I was about to fire, the target was found to be Neutral! An international incident was barely averted.

Not long after, multiple ESM contacts were reported to the southeast. This had to be the convoy we were seeking. We increased power to cruise speed and I was happy to see that we would be closing the targets off of their starboard bow. As the target courses and ranges firmed up, firing solutions were calculated and fed into the torpedoes. I saw that there would only be a single escort vessel between us and the freighters so I elected to 'shoot' our way into the convoy. Two Bidder Mk20S torpedoes were allocated to the escort and one Mk20S each at 2 freighters. The first salvo was launched at a range of 5nm. They were not detected until they were nearly at the end of their torpedo runs. All three targets were killed outright.

A nice side-effect had the remaining merchants running in the opposite direction. This allowed Oberon to move in even closer so that she now sat directly on their PIM and would not need to either expend energy or make noise for her second attack. Shorter-ranged Mk8 torpedoes were chosen for the second volley as the merchant vessels nearly overran the Oberon. Longer-ranged Bidders were saved for any interfering escorts. The surviving transports were destroyed so my option to attack escorts was exercised. Two more escorts were put on the bottom with a pair of torpedoes each. Soon afterward, victory was awarded.

A nice little scenario for submarine enthusiasts. The Gannets did not play a major role in my game, but just the knowledge that they were present was enough to make my skin crawl as I expected my first indication of their presence to be either a depth charge or torpedo attack. Thanks for putting it together.

Nice AAR Herman glad you liked it but do you have to post screen shots of the action scenes showing where all the bad guy units are, as this really helps guys out when playing scenario's ,as I would rather try and find them myself not refer to the AAR reports with the screen shots in

Cheers

Well, all AARs, regardless of the level of detail, reveal information about the scenario and some inherently spoil it to some degree (like this one, as I noted in the title with "[Spoiler Alert]"). I feel that this kind of narration is useful to the players that actually want to compare tactics and their experiences in the game. I purposefully left the screenshots as thumbnails so that they lacked detail. This way, if the reader doesn't want to see too much, he can choose not to click on them, and you can choose the “level of access” to the AAR (only the text if you want to be partly left in the dark, or with the images if you want to “compare notes").

Nice answer...but what about an AAR without "spoiler alert" to give people a choice if you put a screen shot in people will look at it !

Hmmmm, Paul, I'm not sure I'm following you here. What you are asking for would be, if I understood correctly, a *review* of a scenario - i.e. a general description of the size, kind of expected action and quality of the game, but without details. This is something doable, but an AAR is, in spirit, something different: a dramatic tale about what happened in a scenario (I'm daily amazed at how strategy games are the ones that most allow the writing of creative post-action narrative, as opposed to adventures and RPG where the story is actually fixed).

Beside, the "spoiler alert" is almost a courtesy (one I do use myself when I choose to enter into minutae about the games I played) - if you check on other sites, often AARs are presented without this warning, even detailed ones, because it is implicit in this kind of "homage" to tell the tale of how you suffered and (hopefully) won the battle amid uncertainity, nasty surprises and unexpected triumphs! ^__^

If, however, it is a review that you seek, than I think you should explicitly ask for this kind of opinion :)

Hi Vince all I was asking is that the AAR as is written is fine no problems with that , only that why should screen shots be added when the text if written well should be enough.

Paul :)

Hello, Herman, I'm afraid trying to leech scenarios off our site doesn't work too well (for obvious reasons). Anyway since you're probably new to the Internet I would recommend you to do some reading on 'How to Behave on the Internet'. Bandwidth theft is a major no-no and is considered a form of deception, possibly plagairism or even copyright violation. Furthermore, linking to the site where Paul has his database and scenarios posted is a good way to show respect for the author's work.

Anyway, the above scenario can only be downloaded from the HarpoonHQ, which hosts the greatest collection of quality scenarios for Harpoon 3 on the web:

Colonial Wars (1950-1964) scenarios:

1965-1979 scenarios:

1980-2005++ scenarios:

Hi Ragnar! Since you are new on the internet too - at least I didn't saw you around here in the last four weeks - I must inform you that also linking to outside sources for images without giving proper credit (see post http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=294265#post294265 and the relevant image: http://united-states-navy.com/cg/cg73-70.jpg)

I'm happy to see that you already have a grasp on these concepts, so you will be able to avoid such horrible behavior in the future. In the post I just pointed to you (for the sake of this discussion and not implying anything else), the guy writing it totally forgot that, for example, the U.S. Navy requires *explicit* credit when its official pictures are used (see, for this warning, http://www.navy.mil/privacy.html , point #2) - and this is considered "bandwidth theft" and all that other evil things too.

Furthermore, linking to the site where Paul has his database and scenarios posted is a good way to show respect for the author's work.
Very true: a community can only prosper and grow (making prosper and grow the game it is about) only by collaboration, mutual respect and by linking and promoting each other works. I can sadly say that, speaking for the Harpoon community, some sites do seem to live "for themselves" (for an example of some of them just PM me, and I'll show you a site who, childishly, whines and screams to be linked and promoted anywhere, while seldom doing the same for the sites who actually do it). Also, some individuals in the community do seem to consider nothing immoral enough to promote and impose *their* views: lying, defamation of others, mobbing and even malicious tampering with third-party software so to make scenarios crash.

I do know that level-headed players look exceedingly down on these things, and some even do not believe that they can happen in the first place; but, sadly, they *do* happen, and our game’s community has to live with them (if you are interested in the “how’s†and “whys†of these sad phenomena, I can suggest you a very good specialist study at http://www.csj.org/infoserv_articles/langone_michael_cultsqa.htm ).

Anyway, I hope I have not scared you! Luckily, you will not find these kinds of poor-man elitism and childish behavior over here – well, no, it happens over here too, but at the very least it is used to get cut before it becomes too much disruptive; some guy was even banned, some time ago, so, don’t fear: policing works! I can also confirm to you that, for example, Sirius got much good PR and recognition thanks to the efforts to promote his database and scenarios on this section. Also, as you will see, we are a "window" on the world for Harpoon, allowing banners and self-promotion to all the sites born around the game - and many good players from these sites take advantage from this. Not bad for something born only a few months ago, you will agree ;)

Also, we sport a good collection of scenarios for both H3 and HCG – a collection which allows to everybody to freely express himself and share fun using the tools given with the games, avoiding the arbitrary judgments sadly sported by some sites.

Happy to have you onboard. I can't wait for your first constructive contribution to these forums! :)

Paul :)
To tell you the truth, I don't get much out of the screenshots. But, on the other hand, I don't see them as causing any harm either. You really do have to click on the images to see any degree of detail. My two cents. :)

The Navy link has been properly credited. It would be nice of WarfareHQ to do the same and properly link to our site.
