Scenario AAR: Q42.3 East Fort - Playtest with Ernie Cameron
Outcome: Russian Victory
Setting:
The battle unfolds east of the canal amidst rubble and war-torn buildings. The Russians strategically place their forces, remaining concealed and poised to control bridge exits while avoiding German lines of sight. Across the canal, the Germans organize into three groups, each tasked with advancing across the canal via separate bridges, with specific objectives to clear Russian defences and the third to provide a supportive fire bases.
Early Engagement (Turns 1-2):
Initial German manoeuvres to cross the canal result in mixed outcomes. A Russian 25mm AA Gun effectively halts the southern bridge advance with intense residual fire, causing multiple German units to break and seek refuge to regroup in a nearby church. Conversely, the northern bridge sees slightly better progress, with German scouts drawing fire to allow following assault engineers to make ground, although they too face similar Russian fire tactics.
Mid-Battle Developments (Turns 3-4):
As the Germans consolidate their footholds across the canal, they encounter stiff resistance. In the south, German forces, including a platoon rallied in the church, push east towards a strategic factory, screened by skirmish units to counter any Russian counterattacks. In the north, the Germans, led by a determined (9-2) Hauptmann, press forward, challenging the Russian defences centred around a crucial 25mm AA gun installation.
Climactic Confrontations (Turns 5-6):
The battle intensifies with German forces gaining ground amidst crumbling Russian defences. The northern sector sees German troops outmanoeuvre and eventually flank the 25mm AA gun defences as they push towards the factory, simultaneously establishing a suppressive fire zone with a HMG team. The southern German units, rejuvenated and aggressive, navigate through challenging terrain to outflank Russian positions held by a formidable Russian (10-2) Major.
Final Struggles:
Despite the Germans' strategic advancements, a pivotal Russian (9-0) Commissar's action in rallying troops within the factory proves crucial. The final turns are marked by intense close combat and desperate manoeuvres. German forces, including a Hero and assault engineers, fiercely assault the Russian-held factory but face staunch resistance from fortified positions. The Russians, although significantly pressured and nearly overrun, manage to maintain enough control to deny the Germans a clear victory.
Conclusion:
This finely balanced scenario showcased a tactical tug-of-war, with momentum swinging between both sides. Initially favouring the Russians due to strategic positioning, the Germans nearly turned the tide with robust mid-game advancements. However, the resilient Russian defence inside the factory, bolstered by critical leadership and fortification, secured a narrow and hard-fought victory.
Remarks:
An excellently contested scenario against Mr. Cameron, characterized by strategic depth and dynamic combat exchanges. Well, played!
Cheers,
George
