OK, another prompted by my re-read of Chapter G:

Search (A 12.152) is often important in PTO scenarios. Bamboo (or terrain equivalent to bamboo by SSR) can complicate things a bit as it counts as two hexes for search purposes.

Question: Can a Final search dr result ever be <0 such that MORE than 6 hex-equivalents may be searched? For example, if two 'normal', non-CX full US squads (-3 drm) with a 9-2 leader search for a Japanese opponent (+2) and roll a '1' (Final dr = 0/-2) , how many hexes may be searched?

Of the seven hexes in the 1-hex radius, you exclude 0 of them if the final dr is 0.

Yes, but bamboo counts as 2 hexes.

The question is really one of a mathematical nature with respect to the definition of a "hex": The search "equation" such as it is, is

Searchable hexes = Own hex + (6 - Final search dr) adjacent accessible hexes

If the Final search dr cannot be less than 0, then the maximum number of searchable hexes (other than own hex) is 6.

If the Final search dr may be less than 0 the number of searchable hexes could be greater than 6.

This only matters, of course, if a single hex counts as more than one hex for search purposes, as is the case with bamboo.

Stated another way, does the bamboo rule impose a maximum search capacity of three bamboo hexes (other than own hex) per search, regardless of the amount and type of manpower allocated to searching? Or with good enough drms, and a good dr, can more than three bamboo be searched? Or even 2 bamboo and 3 other hexes, which "counts" as 7 hexes searched.

I think that ASL does not impose an arbitary limit on the net result of a roll so yes you could in theory roll -2 and search more than 6 hexes. Of course the benefit of doing so is somewhat limited by the need for the searchable locations to be adjacent but where you have 2hex locations it would be possible.

The rule says "6 - final search dr", not "6 - max(final search dr, 0)", so yes, I'd assume so...
