628 advances into location with a pinned and cx 467. The ambush roll goes awry for the 628 and no ambush occurs. In the 3:2 cc, the 628 rolls an original 12. May the 467 withdraw?

A11.22 states that a unit that has not been eliminated, captured or pinned may withdraw on a "2" DR. A unit "attacked by an Original 12 CC DR may likewise withdraw from CC thereafter ..." Does "likewise" incorporate "pinned" from the prior expression making withdrawal not possible?

A7.8 "....A pinned unit has its inherent FP halved for the remainder of that Player Turn (in addition to any other halving of its FP for other reasons) and may not move/advance farther during that Player Turn (although it may rout if later broken, even voluntarily)."

No, it cannot withdraw. Withdrawal is treated essentially as an advance, which is specifically prohibited.

A11.21 "Withdrawal Mechanics: Any unit withdrawing during the CCPh may carry only < its IPC and must enter an adjacent Location which is Accessible to that Unit under normal APh conditions (even if it requires placement of a CX counter, 4.72). The Location withdrawn to cannot be currently occupied by a Known enemy unit...."

Hope that helps.

This is the global withdrawal mechanics description :
A 11.2 Withdrawal from Melee:
Any Infantry unit engaged in Melee which is not currently pinned may attempt to Withdraw from Melee

... and the specific case of infiltration :
11.22 Infiltration:
The simultaneous nature of CC is momentarily suspended following an Original CC DR of 2/12. Provided it has not already been eliminated/captured/pinned , any Infantry/Cavalry unit which rolls an Original 2 CC DR may withdraw from CC/Melee immediately thereafter in the same CCPh without being attacked, even if it did not eliminate the defenders (see also Field Promotions; 18.12). Any Infantry/Cavalry unit(s) attacked by an Original 12 CC DR may likewise withdraw from CC immediately thereafter, assuming it has not been eliminated by that 12 CC DR.

"Likewise" indicates the same conditions as given for a unit that rolled 2 DR...
Being pinned prohibits withdrawal.

Sometimes the ability to articulate the rule is more evasive than viscerally knowing the rule. Thanks for providing the words that match the gut reaction.
