A British squad and halfsquad (Attackers) are in melee with a German halfsquad. The British squad elects to withdraw with the halfsquad remaining to attack the Germans. The German elects to attack the withdrawing British squad. The British player rolls a 2 for his attack. After leader generation, the British halfsquad elects to withdraw. What happens next?

  1. The British squad also withdraws and the German halfsquad is eliminated.
  2. Before being eliminated the German halfsquad attacks the British squad with a -1 DRM (-2 for withdrawing and +1 for one covering unit).
  3. Before being eliminated the German halfsquad attacks the British squad with a -2 DRM for withdrawing without a covering unit.

I would say 3. Since the squad wasn't part of the infiltration they can't withdraw immediately, only the HS (and any leader) can. The Germans can then make their attack on the squad and the covering unit isn't there any more. I can see an argument for 2 since the covering unit was there, but definitely not 1.

The German half squad is dead when the 2 is rolled.

Two 4 fp british squads face a german 4 fp squad and a 2 fp hs. The 8:6 does give an advantage. The Brit announces a 1:1 attach vs. the squad and 2:1 against the hs. The German announces a 3:2 against the brit attacking the hs. The Brit rolls 1,1 against the squad and 5,3 against the HS. The Brit withdraws his first squad. The other squad remains. Is the attack still 3:2 or now 1:2. That remaining Brit squad is not protected by the infiltration. EagleIV is right, units that are not protected by the infiltration do not escape the simultaneous nature of CC. The 3:2 happens. In the original question, the simultaneous nature of CC is not suspended for the withdrawing unit, so the answer is 2 -- minus 2 withdrawing plus 1 for cover. Still simultaneous and the target is unprotected.

If the Germans in this question had attacked both squads, the 1:2 gets reconfigured to 3:2 against the non-withdrawing squad. That's how I would play it.

Where did the German squad come from?

My answer is based on another version of the question. If it was just the 2 HS's and the Attacker rolled eyes, and didn't withdraw the Defender still gets its attack. If the Attacker does withdraw there is nothing for the Defender to attack and so it loses its attack.

In this case the British HS rolls eyes. It doesn't matter if they withdraw or not, the British squad doesn't withdraw until the end of the CC in the location after the German HS gets its attack.

The rule says attempting to withdraw, the 2 is no attempt..it just occurs if desired...TECHNICALLY.
The German HS still gets to attack..just not against the retreating HS if that was the choice.
