Make sure you back up your originals and read the README files. Some of these mods contain two separate mods, so whatever you do, don't download them directly into your game.

Since I seem to be running out of bandwidth each month I've added a second set of links to the list of download links. And if that doesn't do the trick I'll add a third.

I hope it doesn't come to that, because I'm still updating and have a few more planned as well.

Hail Philippe!

I just wanted to add my thanks for all the hard work and dedication you have put into your mods. Because of them I have expanded my library of JTS Napoleonic games. The games are excellent in their quality of gameplay but the graphics...
I hope that one day old JT will do something about the graphics but till then your work makes these games playable!

Again thanks you.

Many thanks Phillipe !

Your efforts add a huge amount to HPS/JTS games.
When I first saw the figures in my first HPS purchase; "The War of1812" I thought..."My God, the figures look like clothes pin soldiers ! Why didn't he bring his artist from Talonsoft with him ? "

Thank you,

I'm in the early stage of rolling out a series of updates that will upgrade all of my Napoleonic mods.

As of time of writing, I've updated Waterloo, Leipzig, and 1814, but there are more in the works.

Bandwidth has not been as serious a problem lately as it was a year ago, so though I will keep using the two sets of download sites, only the first of the two links will be absolutely up to date until I have finished updating all of the mods.

So for Waterloo, Leipzig, and 1814, at the moment the first link will give you a newer version than the second link. If you have any doubts about any of this, the version numbers appear in the titles of the downloads, so you should be able to tell which is the newer version if you get confused.

The list of mods that have been recently updated now includes Waterloo, Leipzig, 1814, Bautzen, Austerlitz, and Jena.

As mentioned in the previous post, only the first of the two links for each mod is up to date. The second pair of links will be brought up to speed when the entire series of mods has been updated.

All of the Napoleonic mods have now been updated.

The second link in each pair of links points to an older version of the mod, so always pay close attention to the version numbers in case you click on the wrong link.

The 3D figures in Bautzen, Leipzig, and 1814 are the stock figures from the vanilla version of the games. Most of them have been repositionioned a few pixels this way or that, and a very few of them may have had their saturation reduced (I don't remember at this point). What makes a difference is that the bases have been redone (smaller and different colors to match the unitboxes) so that the figures sit squarely on the bases, and this enhances the look of Mark Adams' artwork. There were a few cases where I had to repair or rebuild a unit, but these are few and far between.

The 3D figures in all the other games were derived from Ezjax's mods. A lot of the figures had to be moved around (because they were showing up in the wrong slots), some of the flags were changed (especially in the Waterloo mod), but by and large Ezjax's figures were sitting on the right spots on the units bitmap. The only problem was in games like Eckmuhl and Wagram where the coding was changed a few times after Ezjax stopped making mods so a mod using his units (and sometimes the plain vanilla version) would end up showing blank slots where a 3D unit should have been. There were a lot of discussions about flags -- mine are slightly different from his. Many units had several radically different flags, often in different colors. And the Austrians not only had two differently colored versions of the same flag (one yellow, one white), but the obverse and reverse of the flags had completely different images on them (modern flags are boringly consistant by contrast). The dual face business was a feature of many of the German states' flags, and most of the countries involved only had regimental as opposed to national flags. So if a country's regimental flags are the monogram of the head of state on one side, and a black cross with a reddish, blueish, greenish, or yellowish background, what flag do you use to represent the country? This is the reason that there are a fair number of deliberate inconsistencies in the use of flags in the background of the unitboxes and flying over the 3D units. And yes, I've thought about sticking flags in the middle of each of the 3D figures, but that's a lot of work that I don't have the time for right now.

And for the record, the boats that I used in Bautzen are heavily modified versions of boats from one of the EAW games. I still haven't modded the Swedish coastal frigate because I'm not satisfied with the way my lateen-sail substitute looks (I was going to use modded spinnakers from the old Talonsoft Age of Sai)l.

My Napoleonic mods have all just been updated (again), and this is probably a good time to mention a few details that often get lost in the shuffle.

First, under each game title you will see three links.

The first link in each title is to a Box account, the second and third links are to Dropbox accounts.

The third link (i.e. the second Dropbox link) is to an older version of the mods that predates the latest couple of rounds of updating. I doubt that anyone will download it very often, but for now it's there, in case someone needs it (for EAW, for example). The main feature difference is that it uses Ezjax's trees.

The first two links (the Boxnet and the Dropbox links) are both currently using the same graphics (the version that became the standard a few weeks ago) but one of them has different sound files in its media folder.

Ed Williams (aka Volcano Man) has kindly agreed to allow me to include his Sound Pack for the Napoleonic Campaigns series, so you won't have to go to his Volcano Man site to download the sounds separately.

So if you want to download one of my Napoleonic mods with Ed's excellent battle sound modifications, one-stop-shopping is now an option.

The first link listed under each title (the Box link) will be the link to the version including the Volcano Man sound mod.

And the second link listed under each title (the Dropbox link) will be the link to the version that does not include the Volcano Man sound mod.

If the Box links run out of bandwidth before the end of the month, just download from the second link and then download Ed's sound mod from the Volcano Man website.

If you have any doubts about which version is which, the Box and Dropbox links have slightly different version numbers. The higher number is always the one that includes Volcano Man's mod.

By the way, a quick and dirty way to tell whether you have Volcano Man's mod installed or not is to open a scenario where there are skirmishers and make one of the shoot at something. In the plain vanilla version you should hear a single dull pop, which is kind of odd since that sound is supposed to represent fifty to a hundred skirmishers skirmishing. In Volcano Man's version more than one guy will fire, but it's sporadic firing and not an organized volley.

On another note, there are a multiple readme files and several different customization options in each of the mods.

There's generally one master readme file, one readme file that is a note to remind you to back up your original (these are essentially a form of total conversion mods and a lot will get overwritten), and a readme file that tells you how to use the special features.

Some of the special features are simple things like making parallel installs so you can make (for example) the Retreat from Moscow look different from the march on Moscow. But one of the things in the readme file is a fairly detailed set of instructions on how to do something that most people aren't familiar with, namely, how to install and/or change the desktop icons I've provided with each mod. If you use the parallel install method (described in the readme files), you'll understand why you need those extra icons.

One of the special features that I don't tend to discuss in the readme files very much is the use of alternate textures. The things that I've provided in these mods are designed to look good and work well together. You may not always agree, and so in a few cases I've provided a few simple alternatives that you can play around with if you think something might look better. The things that are most likely to have alternatives are the cover screen art, a few of the 3D map features (last time I looked there were supposed to be blood/no-blood options that could be installed -- the default is set for blood), and some of the music (usually but not always the music in the Media folder, not the Music folder).

One last comment about music.

In my own personal computer what I have done is to make copies of the existing music folders so I don't lose them (the copies are in the game folders next to the working Music folder), deleted the original versions of the music folders (so that there is no partial overwriting), and then have made a copy of the slightly modified music folder from the Leipzig game, and copied that into all the other games.

[The modification of one of the bacground files in the Leipzig game simply consisted of editing out someone yelling 'God Save the King!', since that is only appropriate in a battle where one side is English].

The end result is that there is music when you fire the game up (instead of that silly explosion sound), and I've taken pains over the quality of the win/lose/draw music. But while the game is playing you just hear clanking background noises, which are much less distracting and make it easier to concentrate on what you're doing. And it really won't matter much if the program decides to play the same sound track over and over again fifteen times. If you really want music playing in the background, there's no shortage of electronic devices that can provide it for you (I'm sure some people listen to Led Zeppelin, but I really don't want to hear about that).

There's been a last minute update that needs explaining.

My mods for Leipzig, Bautzen, and 1814 now have 3D infantry figures carrying the same flags that appear in their unit boxes. This makes these mods visually consistent with the mods that use Ezjax and Ezjax-derived figures.

Cavalry units do not have flags, not because they didn't use them (they did), but because I thought that it would look kind of weird to see hexes with six horsemen and five flags.

I've also included a temporary fix in the Leipzig mod: in the Wartenburg scenario a Silesian grenadier was showing up with a Russian artillery sprite. I'm not sure when the next round of official patches to these games is going to be, but just in case there's prolongued delay, I thought it would be better to err on the side of caution. I mention this here so that people who are engaged in PBEM's on this scenario will be aware of a (slight and non-substantive) difference between their versions. I've simply changed the 2D and 3D sprite coding for the Silesian grenadier to use the same coding as all other Prussian grenadiers. Bill Peters will probably be along shortly to tell me that I picked the wrong numbers.

The month is less than half done and I've burned through two thirds of the bandwidth in my box account. To accomodate the fact that a lot of people may want to re-download Leipzig, 1814, and Bautzen now that they use 3D flags, the absolutely latest versions of the mod for these three games only are available on the first and second links (the box link and the dropbox link).
The third link is older (no flags and uses Ezjax trees).

On all the other games (Waterloo, Austerlitz, Jena, Eckmuhl, Wagram, NRC) the first link is the absolutely latest version, the second link gives the same thing minus the Volcano Man sound mod, the third link gives an older version of the mod.

If for some reason you can't click on one of the links, just copy and paste it into the command line at the top of your browser.

One last comment. I am satisfied (and quite happy) with the way the large size version of the 3D flags looks. But much less so with the half-size version, and don't rule out making another attempt at some point in the future. If you find the small 3D flags don't sit well visually, an alternative is to download from the third link and retrieve the half-size version of the infantry without flags. I thought about doing that but ruled against it because it was a bit too jarring and the small flags version didn't look all that bad.

Fine work on all those mods, very much appreciated!

Just so everyone is aware of this, the mods for Bautzen, Leipzig, 1814, and Waterloo have been updated to bring them in line with the latest official patch.

In case any of the other games get official patches before I get around to updating the mods, what is getting changed are two bitmaps in the Map folder, 2DHexsides50 and 2DHexsides100. I haven't checked recently but I think these can be transferred to all of the mods except possibly the Retreat from Moscow mod from Napoleon's Russian Campaign.

I have only updated the box links, so the difference between the box links and the dropbox links is growing. The dropbox links take you to a much earlier version of the mod, and the operating software for dropbox is so clunky and invasive that I don't really want to install it on my new computer unless I absolutely have to.

So when there are two or three links listed under a game, only use the first link.
