This is an AAR of a game of „A bridge too far 44 v1.5“ (by Erik Nygaard & Marc Custer) that Nemo, playing the germans and i, playing the allies, have recently started. I am sure, i need not to explain in this forum which battle of WWII the scenario deals with. We are currently at turn 10 of 40.

The scenario comes in an uncommon scale for TOAW, one hex is one kilometer, and therefore contains an own exe. Erik and Marc used the 2.5 km per hex scale and modified artillery ranges and force movement bias accordingly. Unit scale is company and one turn is six hours.

There are a few house rules concerning airdrops and bridge blowing. As TOAW treats parallel river/road lines as bridges, actual bridges are marked on the map. Only these can be destroyed, but there are limitations on this, too: bridges marked with )*( can be destroyed by any unit, bridges marked with ][ may only be destroyed by engineer units. The allies are not allowed to blow any bridges.
The most important airborne house rules are the following: Airborne units must be dropped in their according landing zone on turn 1 and on each landing/drop zone must land at least one battalion. Supply drops will begin in the landing zones, and only there, on turn five.
This means that the scenario is replaying history. There are certainly a lot of decisions and options that will make the scenario differ from the historical campaign, but the given frame will have you to replay roughly the historical campaign, which in this case may be still a suspensefull gamble with an uncertain outcome.

As the rough scheme is given the overall plan is determined accordingly. The three airborne divisions (British 1st AB, US 82nd and 101st AB) will be dropped in their landing zones along the corps‘ advance route and are tasked with taking and securing the key bridges, digging in and to pray for XXX Corps to arrive soon. As there is not enough air transport capability to drop the entire three divisions on the first turn, the focus was set on british 1st airborne at Arnhem which received the biggest part of the available transport room. Later on in the campaign, around turns five and nine, the allies will be able to execute another two airlandings. For a major victory the Corps must not only reach Arnhem, but also will have to push beyond the city as from 3450 victory points over 1400 are laying on the northern side of the Needer Rjin (Lower Rhine) outside the city.
More detail on the plannings will be given later in the AAR as the battle evolves.

Turn 1 (Morning, September 17th)

Sector of British 1st Airborne Division (Arnhem):

Almost the entire division has been dropped in its landing zone west of Arnhem with the task to capture the city and its bridge over the Nieder-Rhein (lower rhine) with its main force. A western task force consisting of the 156 Para Bn tries to destroy the divisional supply depot which has been spotted in the village Ede. A southern task force from the 1st Para Bde will clear the road leading southwest to Wargeningen to capture the bridge there and a northern task force (from 4th Para Bde) is ordered to occupy and to hold Deelen airfield northwest of the city. This airfield may be used to airlift the 52nd Lowland Airlanding Division. The railroad bridge 5 kms west of Arnhem will be blocked in the case the enemy will sent his engineers over the bridge.

Sector of 82nd Airborne Division (Nijmegen):

Most of 82nd AB has been dropped south and southeast of Nijmegen. Only three battalions stayed in Britain as a reserve along with the most divisional and regimental support units. The first objectives are to capture Nijmegen and the vital bridge over the Waal river, to secure the bridges crossing the Maas-Waal Canal and to capture the Grave bridge. For this purpose the division will advance on the three roads leading from the main landing zone to Nijmegen (see attached picture) while in the southern landing zone the 504th regiment is ordered to capture the bridges at Grave/Nederasselt and Overasselt and then to bring the road between Nederasselt and Honinghutje under control. The 1st battalion of this regiment will also secure location 26/40 that will later in the campaign become available for airlifting the 52 Lowland Airlanding Division.
Further tasks of the division will be to cross the Waal river if possible and to establish a bridgehead on “the island” between Nijmegen and Arnhem where it can later meet with the polish airborne brigade’s bridgehead (if dropped there). A light defensive screen will be build southeast of Nijmegen near the Reichswald to create a buffer-zone in case of an enemy counterattack from that direction.

Sector of 101st Airborne Division (north of Eindhoven):

The 101st Airborne Division has dropped seven battalions north of Eindhoven between Son and Leest with the primary tasks to capture the bridges over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son and Best, St.Oedenrode, the bridge over the Zuid Wilhelms Canal/Aa River at Veghel and Hulstheuvel. Its further tasks will be to bring as much as possible of the main advance route of XXX Corps under control and to prepare for german counterattacks. The rest of the division will be dropped as reinforcements during later turns, depending on available air transport and enemy actions in its own sector and the other airborne bridgeheads.

General note on supply of the airborne bridgeheads:

The Airborne units will be five turns without supply, then supply drops will begin on the dropping points. That means a supply point is created on a marked location together with a supply unit. In the case of the 1st British Airborne one location has to be captured first. If a supply unit is destroyed, the corresponding supply point will be removed.

XXX Corps:

Except some artillery units, the Corps is in reserve status and will be released on turn two. 151 Infantry Brigade from 50 Northumberland Division, covering the left flank will be released on turn five. The available artillery will bombard enemy units in front of XXX Corps to soften them up for the coming attack.
The allied air force is in total control of the skies over the theatre.

The first combat:

In the Arnhem sector british paratroopers are in contact with the enemy, a SS reserve battalion and a single SS infantry platoon blocking the roads to the city. Attacks will be executed in the afternoon (next turn).
In the main landing zone of US 82nd AB the village Wyler on the northern road to Nijmegen has been cleared from the enemy while an attack on Groesbeek inflicted heavy casualties on the german garrison but was not succesfull in capturing the village. The 1st battalion of 505 AB Regt is in contact with the enemy at Mook.
South of Nijmegen the 3rd Bn/504 is in contact with the garrison of Blankenberg. Attacks on Grave and Overasselt were unsuccesfull, but will be carried out again in the afternoon with stronger forces.
In the 101st Airborne sector the enemy was driven out of Veghel and has retreated to the west. Koevering has been liberated. The bridges of St.Oedenrode and Neinsel have been captured while the attack on Son will be carried out next turn. Best has not been reached yet.

Enemy dispositions and reactions:

There was no enemy movement this turn (Nemo told me later, that all of his units were in reserve/garrison status on turn one).

Turn 2 (Afternoon, September 17th)

General Situation

XXX Corps is now released from reserve status and the three airborne divisions are heading towards their first objectives.

Arnhem (Br. 1st Airborne Div)

The northern task force has closed in on Deelen airfield and stands now five kilometres southwest of it. On the roads to Arnhem, attacks carried out against SS Infantry blocking both roads were unsuccessfull. Heelsum has been attacked, one artillery battery has been destroyed, but the defenders are still in possession of the village. The western task force has reached Ede and an attack against the supply depot there has been ordered for the early night hours (next turn).

Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne Div)

Groesbeek has been cleared from the enemy, who has retreated into the forests north of the village. The road from the village to Nijmegen seems to be free. A recon section has reached Malden, five kilometres south of the suburbs of the city. The bridges at Mook and Heumen have been captured, Riethorst is in allied hands, but attacks at Grave and Overasselt have not brought significant success, these bridges are still in enemy hands.

Sector of US 101st Airborne Division

Hulstheuvel bridge has been captured and advancing units will reach Uden and the road junction there in the night hours. Yet no enemy unit has been spotted in Uden. At Best the position of a german garrison unit was unsuccesfully attacked while at Son an attack inflicted heavy damages on both sides and was also unsuccessfull. The attacks against these two bridges will be repeated in the early night. The road between Son in the southern part of the sector and Hulstheuvel 30 kms to the north is now completely controlled by 101st Airborne whose bridgehead has become a thin belt along this road. The danger of overstretching is obvious and in the case of a strong enough counterattack the situation may become very bad unless reinforcements will be flown in or dropped.

XXX Corps

XXX Corps has been released this turn and has begun its assault towards its first objective, Eindhoven. Recon estimates that there is a german Fallschirmjäger Regiment (6.FJ Regt) on XXX Corps' left flank, a Penal Bn on its front and units from 19.SS Regt on its right flank. 50 Northumberland Div will advance on the left flank, crossing the Meuse-D'Escault Canal at Luyksgestel. Guards Armor Div along with the Household Cavalry and 44 Royal Tank Regt will advance in the middle while 43 Wessex Div, supported by one Battalion of 50 Northumberland crosses the Meuse-D'Escault Canal at Neerpelt to attack on the right flank.
Princess Irene Brigade is ordered to advance directly to the east to cover the flank between St.Hubert-Lille and Neeroeteren, further to cross the Meuse-d'Escault Canal together with a battalion from 43 Wessex Division, and then turn northeast to drive into the enemy’s back and attack supposed artillery positions near Hamot-Achel and Midbul

XXX Corps’ first combat:

Although being extremely outnumbered, german resistance was stronger than expected. Though the Penal Battalion lost two of its companies, advance was very slowly; the canal was crossed on both flanks, but 50 Northumberland achieved nothing more than establishing a bridgehead and failed beating the germans out of Luyksgestel while the 43 Wessex Div's attacks have also been unsuccesfull. The exact strength of german forces in the middle is unknown. It seems that there is nothing of quality the german commander could put in front of Guards Armour at the moment, but it is estimated that there are still some hidden units in this direction that may slow down the advance, probably before the lead units will have reached Valkenswaard.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

There has been significant german movement; the enemy is reinforcing the whole area with units coming in from the east and west. Some small attacks have been put back on the flanks of XXX Corps, while new units have been thrown in the way of it, amongst them a tankdestroyer company, two anti-tank units and fussiliers of FJ Regt Hoffmann. It will not be possible to reach Valkenswaard within the next two turns. The flanks of the Corps' main advance direction (1st Guards Armour) have also been reinforced by a few companies and anti-tank units.

Following units and formations have been spotted further north:

  • Units of 10.SS Panzer Div heading towards arnheim from the east, from which a battalion of 21.SS PzGren Regt and the division's support units have been identified.
  • Sections of two SS Wacht Battalions in the west of Arnhem secured positions around Ede.
  • The HQ of “Korps Feldt”, consisting of reserve infantry units, is marching towards the Nijmegen area from the east.
  • Units of 180.Infantry Div were spotted 20-30 km southwest of Nijmegen
  • The german garrison defending the bridge at Best has been reinforced by three AT/AA companies. It is estimated that a german RCT (the 1034th) consisting of two battalions and regimental support units is now 8-10 km to the northwest of the village which may enter the battle during the night (next turn) or in the early morning hours.
  • A regimental headquarter is positioned north of Nijmegen

Turn 3 (Night, September 17th)

General situation

Although elements of several german kamfgruppen and combat regiments have been spotted entering the theater from the west and east their exact positions are yet unknown. All bridges are still intact at the beginning of the turn.

Arnhem (Br. 1st Airborne Div)

British paratroopers have expanded their bridgehead and have reached the suburbs of Arnhem, being stopped by a SS Infantry company. The 16.SS Depot Reserve Battalion has been beaten and is on the retreat. In the northwest lead elements have closed in on Deelen airfield, standing now two kilometres southwest of it. The 156th Para Bn has attacked a divisional supply depot at Ede, that has hastily been evacuated, so only minor damage could have been inflicted. Ede has been occupied.

Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne Div)

A recon section has reached the outskirts of the city but is by now exposed to enemy counterattacks, while most of the units heading towards the town are still four to six kms behind after having cleared the forests northwest of Groesbeek from the last Widerstandsnests. 82nd airborne is building a defensive screen in its eastern sector through the Reichswald between Milsbeek and Kranenburg to prepare for a possible german counterattack. Attacks on Grave and Blankenberg have been unsuccessfull, but Overasselt is now in allied hands, its garrison retreated to the east and left the bridge unoccupied.

Sector of US 101st Airborne Div

German resistance stiffens in this sector. Units attacking Son, Best and the retreated garrison of St.Oedenrode met with strong resistance and were unable to push the enemy back. In the north the advance towards Uden was halted by a garrison unit digged in in the village, which will be attacked before dawn in order to capture the crossroad there and to build a defence parameter around the village before a recon mission will be carried out towards the 82 AB sector. Allied command is considering to halt the advance in that direction, depending on enemy actions and due to the fact that the Division is already overstretched.

XXX Corps

Progress was small in this sector. Units of 50 Northumberland Div have driven the 6.FJ Regt one kilometre away from Luyksgestel, smashed an infantry company and advanced two kilometres on the road leading to Westerhoven. In the middle 1st Guards armor was not able to sweep a section consisting of 13 Jagdpanzer IV/70 away from the road (!). East of the road armour and armoured recon units made a progress of two kilometres, driving back support units (AT/Fussiliers) of FJ Regt Hoffmann and attacked unsuccesfully the HQ of Oberst Walter, commander of the Division/Kampfgruppe Walter. 43 Wessex Div unsuccesfully attacked the enemy south of Hamot-Achel, while northwest of the town the 1 Hampshire Bn of that division reached the railroad leading to Eindhoven. Capture and control of this railroad is regarded vital to keep XXX Corps in good supply during its advance. 8th Armoured Brigade is held in reserve and will build the spearhead of the Corps after the breakthrough.
The 7 Somerset light Battalion and Princess Irene Brigade have reached the Meuse-d'Escault Canal and will cross it next round, the Somerset Battalion at Lezen and the Princess Irene Bde at Bocholt.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

The enemy has reinforced the Arnhem area; units of 21.SS PzGren Regt have now been reinforced by elements of 10.SS Panzer Division’s other two Regiments, the 9.Panzer and 20.PzGren, that have formed a thin line 1-2 kms west of the road Arnhem - Schaarsbergen. Though British recon troops have been driven back 1 km west of the city by the enemy, he is not yet able to launch a strong counterattack, but it is estimated that the mass of 10.SS Panzer Division lays still behind or will arrive over the next day. The supply drop location 3 km northeast of Oosterbeck is still dangerously exposed to enemy attacks. North and south of Deelen airfield two Luftwaffe infantry companies have taken position. The enemy’s disposition leaves a 3 km wide gap between the airfield and the newly formed thin line west of the city. However, this gap can’t be exploited due to current positions and lack of mobility. In the western sector of the arnhem bridgehead the garrison of Renkum has been reinforced by a marine infantry battalion and the “Ede supply depot unit” managed to break contact with allied troops.

The 6.Landschützen Regiment along with some SS reserve units has pushed out of Nijmegen to stop the advance of 82nd Airborne and attacked the recon section two kilometres south of the city centre, whose heroic defence against an overhelming force prevented the enemy to take positions further south of the city. However, the enemy blocked all three roads leading to the city. East of the landing zone, no enemy movement was spotted. No trace of the Korps Feldt or 180.Infanterie division that have entered the theatre from that direction in the evening. These formations are not motorized and may reach the frontline over the next day or they are waiting for more reinforcements to assemble for a later attack.

In the 101st’s sector the 1034.Infanterie Regiment has reached Best and has taken positions northwest of the village, a weak attack has been beaten back by the 2nd battalion of 502nd Regt. The exact strength of 1034.Inf and also its parental division is unknown. It is possible that more enemy reinforcements arrive from this direction. The rest of the area was quite, no enemy units have been spotted moving in.

Small german counterattacks in the south have been unsuccessfull except one, that drove back three weakened infantry companies of 50 Northumberland south of Luyksgestel. The german commander still puts everything he can in the way of XXX Corps, thus delaying any fast advance in this sector.

Turn 4 (Pre-dawn, September 18th)

General situation

XXX Corps is still delayed by the enemy who is desperatly trying to buy time for his counterattacks against the airborne bridgheads before XXX Corps arrives. Although it is just a question of time until the german lines will crush, speeding this up is vital for the entire operation, not only to reach the airborne troops in time, but also to prevent the enemy from building strong defensive positions in the depth along the main road to Arnhem. The enemy is not yet able to set up strong counterattacks in the operational areas of the three airborne divisions but german reinforcements are pouring in constantly and especially the British 1st Airborne will have a tough stand against a SS Panzer Corps, even if it is not at full strength. This is the last turn the paratroopers will be out of supply and supply drops will begin the next turn.
No bridges have been blown by the enemy yet.

Arnhem (Br. 1st Airborne Div)

Heavy fighting even during the night. The 11th Para Bn attacked the two infantry companies flanking the way to Deelen airfield but was unsuccessfull in pushing the enemy back. German Flak Units have been spotted occupying the airfield. A combined attack by companies from 2 Staffordshire Bn and 1 Border Bn closed the ring around the 16.SS Reserve Bn. Inside the small pocket a unit from 9.SS Panzer Div could be identified, a fact causing some more headache for 1st AB Division’s commander, Major General Urquhart.
In a fierce counterattack allied troops regained their previous positions west of the city centre. During the battles one Panther was destroyed and another three tanks were forced to retreat. As long as enemy tanks remain in the city itself (instead of operating in the open) and don’t show up in great numbers they will be no such a big threat.
In the western sector of the Arnhem bridgehead two attacks were executed to get into better tactical positions, one at Ede which didn’t succeed and the other one at renkum which was successfull in driving back a marine infantry company. As a result, Renkum garrison is now threatened from three sides by allied troops.
With Heelsum captured, the ferries of Heelsum, Doorwehrt and Driel felt into allied hands, which can be used for river crossings.

Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne Div)

While advancing towards Nijmegen it turned out that 6.Landschutz Regt, supported by SS reserves, has not only blocked the access roads, but also has formed a line in the city’s southeast, reaching from the village Beek to Somerchen. Allied paratroopers have advanced in front of the german defenders and are preparing for an attack in the morning. The recon section that has heroically withstood an overhelming attack south of the city in the night has been withdrawn to Malden. An assault on the village Beek was carried out but led to nothing than heavy losses on both sides.
The defenders of Kranenburg have been significantly weakened by an allied attack which could lead to a successfull capture of the town in the morning.
Blankenberg has been captured and after an attack on Heumen its garrison fled into the swampy area west of the village. Allied units there are ordered to clear the area between those villages in the morning from the last resistance and to join the advance to Nijmegen on the western side of the Maas-Waal Canal according to initial plans. If they are lucky this could already be in the afternoon of september 18th (in 2 turns).
Grave has been attacked in the pre-dawn hours, too. Having been attacked and bombarded continously since the airlanding, the defending garrison company was no longer able to offer resistance and has withdrawn. At dawn only a few Flak-crews fanatically defended the village. Grave and Nederasselt together with their two important bridges over the Raam and the Maas River are expected to be taken in the morning.

Sector of US 101st Airborne Div

After an attack from three sides Uden has been taken. US paratroopers have been further advancing towards the “Zuid-Willems/Wilhelmina canal perimeter” near the village Beek to recon and to cover the division’s eastern flank. It is planned that these two companies will dig in after securing the “perimeter” to serve as a kind of early warning system and to create a bolster in case of a german attack from that direction. Depending on further developments they will be reinforced by a third company.
Attacks at Son have driven the defenders 1 km back and evaporated an infantry company. If the enemy is forced to reorganize his remaining troops there (only Flak crews defending desperately) Son can be captured in the morning. This would mean that 101st has secured all of its initial objectives except the bridge at Best, which is regarded the least important one of these.
Regarding this and enemy strength, the 2nd Bn of 502nd Regt has digged in in front of Best and is resting while waiting for reinforcements. This battalion is standing against an enemy regiment of two battalions plus the village’s garrison plus other supporting minor units that came from Eindhoven and also it is possible that more german units arrive from northwest of Best.

XXX Corps

Massive pressure on the enemy has brought his lines on the flanks to collapse. On the left flank 50 Northumberland, supported by two tank companies of 19 Royal Hussars, advanced two kilometres on the road north of Luyksgestel, evaporated several german Fallschirmjäger companies and reached the command posts of the 6. Fallschirmjäger Regt. and its battalions. On the right flank 43 Wessex pushed the enemy, who lost three companies of infantry, completely out of his positions and smashed his line. The Princess Irene Brigade and the Somerset light battalion had to change their plans when the advancing units found Lezen occupied by a SS Flak company after crossing the canal. Three companies of the Somerset light battalion crossed the canal on ponton bridges two kilometres northeast of St.Hubert-Lille and an armoured car company bypassed the enemy at Lezen heading towards Cranendock which is now within sight. The rest of the task force dealt with the defenders of Lezen who were able to withstand the first assault so that the village is still in german hands at dawn.
Not so inspired was the performance of 1st Guards Armour. Despite being attacked from three sides the digged-in tankdestroyer section of Kampfgruppe Heinke could again not be swept away from the road. The only good news is that a probing attack southwest of Schaft revealed a weak spot in the enemy lines and forced the defenders to retreat. A MG company of 1 Guards Armour has reached Schaft and 15/19 Hussars managed to get behind the tankdestroyers blocking the main road. Massive artillery fire was ordered on an enemy troop massing that inflicted heavy casualties .
In general, it seems that the german troops perform quite proficient in night combat, compared to the allied ones.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

Again massive reinforcements have been brought in by the enemy which above all changed the situation at Arnhem. From the east of the city have been moving in elements of Kampfgruppen Möller and Harder, both from 10.SS Panzer, Kampfgruppe Euling, the 10.SS Aufklärungs Bn and Artillery batteries which have probably positioned themselves east of the city. In the north fresh units from KG Spindler and the 9.SS Aufklärung assaulted allied positions. The badly positioned 11th Para Bn near Deelen airfield completely lost balance and is on the retreat. The 16.SS Reserve Bn has been relieved and escaped its encirclement due to the retreat of companies from 10th Para Bn and 2 Staffordshire Bn under the pressure of 20.SS PzGren Regt. In front of Arnhem an attack by infantry of 9.SS Panzer led to an allied retreat of 1 km. In the eastern sector of the Arnhem bridgehead enemy reinforcements of lower quality arrived. Flak units from Division Tettau have been spotted at Ede and a KG Schultz has reinforced the enemy at Renkum. Enemy attacks on british positions there were unsuccessfull.

In the Nijmegen area it was relatively calm. Northeast of the Reichswald two Kampfgruppen have been spotted moving towards 82nd landing zone which could have been identified as KG Fürstenberg and KG Stargaard. A small attack on the F-company of 2nd Bn/508 east of Kranenburg was repulsed. A Kampfgruppe Goebel has advanced to Milsbeek, together with units from the Korps Feldt. Units from 180.Infantry Div have also been spotted moving southeast of the Reichswald but their destination and their current position is unknown. KG Goebel attacked Milsbeek with an assault gun company; this attack has also been repulsed by the entrenched paratroopers in the village. A SS Ersatz company has destroyed the bridge over the Maas-Waal Canal at Hatert.

Except one successfull enemy attack north of Best which forced the F-company of 2nd Bn/502 to retreat, the 101st Airborne’s sector was calm. No enemy units have been spotted moving in this area.

In the XXX Corps sector units probably belonging to Division Walter and Walter’s HQ have retreated northeast leaving a thinner line composed of Fusiliers of FJ Regt Hoffmann. On the right flank 19.SS Regt remained in place, maybe the enemy is reorganizing. No other enemy actions on this front.

Losses after 1st day of battle:

Infantry squads ~430 (!)
MGs ~300 (!)
Mortars ~100
Jeeps etc. 33
ACs 3
Trucks 126
APCs 5
Tanks 15
Aircraft 25

Note: Screenshots show in most cases the situation after the german reaction and are taken on the beginning of the new turn before any movement or action.

Turn 5 (Morning, September 18th)

General Situation

Enemy pressure on the airborne bridgeheads is increasing, especially at Arnhem, where the germans have brought in massive reinforcements. The capture of 1st Airborne's primary objetive, the bridge over the Rhine, seems to be beyond the division’s capability by now. However, offensive operations will be continued and focused on the city and the Rhine bridge as not to capture the bridge could mean a failure for the entire operation. For this purpose it is planned to drop the most part of the polish airborne brigade, which will be available in 24 hours (turn 9), on the southern side of the bridge with the task to assault it from that side or to sneak in behind the german frontline by a river crossing at Huissen.
The good news is that supply drops have begun this turn in the airborne divisions’ bridgeheads (that they desperately needed) and a second wave of airdrops is possible this turn.
The situation of XXX Corps still is quite frustrating. The enemy has executed a formidable delaying action and after 24 hours of constant fighting the corps has advanced no further than 6 to 7 km in any direction from its bridgehead, but now there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. A breakthrough in the centre and penetration into enemy terrain could be possible before the night.
On the extreme left flank the 151st Infantry Brigade of 50 Northumberland is released from reserve and may begin offensive operations.

Arnhem (Br. 1st Airborne Div)

Supply drops have begun this turn and the division received reinforcements via air. Three anti-tank companies and the divisional engineers have been dropped, so that the entire division is now at Arnhem. Southwest of Deelen airfield the badly mauled 11 Para Bn had to be retreated. Reinforcements have been sent to there from other battalions and freshly arrived anti tank companies are heading towards this area to plug possible gaps in the line. While consolidating the front, it became clear that the enemy has lengthened his line and it now reaches from Deelen Airfield directly six kilometres to the south, and then turns southeast to Arnhem.
Attacks on an exposed SS Panzergrenadier company and the 16.SS Reserve Bn have been repulsed by the enemy. The relatively fresh 3rd Para Bn has been sent to the most southeastern allied position, two kilometres west of Arnhem, in order to prepare for an all-out assault towards the bridge in the afternoon.
In the western area of the bridgehead Renkum has been encircled but a first attack on the village has been repulsed by the enemy. A small test attack near Ede has been carried out, but the enemy held his ground.
Due to recent developments (and due to the enemy’s high grade of motorization) it has to be considered to give up Ede and to retreat to the east to plug the existing 5 km wide hole between the Ede taskforce and the bulk of the division. Also allied units will be ordered to stop the advance towards Wargeningen bridge after the capture of Renkum and to form a line anchored at this village and leading to the north through the forest.

Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne Div)

Like in the other bridgeheads supply drops have begun here, too. Almost the entire rest of the division has been dropped as reinforcements. The southern edge of the eastern defence perimeter in and near Milsbeek has been reinforced by the 1st Bn of 325th Glider Regt while at the northern edge the frontline has been slightly withdrawn to build a continous line southwest of Kranenburg. An enemy troop massing, consisting mainly of infantry in the size of an entire regiment, has been discovered between Kleve and Nütterden, six to eight kilometres east of Kranenburg. This could be the Kampfgruppen Fürstenberg and Stargaad.
An attack southeast of Nijmegen has revealed a weak spot in the enemy line and a company of 508.Para Regt has pushed in, now standing two kilometres west of Beek (~4 km to the city centre), which has been attacked unsuccesfully from the east. No other attacks have been carried out against this line. The fresh and fast 80 AA Glider Bn, equipped with jeeps, has been ordered to move from the Groessbeek heights through Malden towards Somerchem to test the enemy there and exploit possible gaps. It is currently at Malden and expected to reach Somerchem (maybe Nijmegen with luck) in the afternoon. It is also planned to sweep with a couple of units from 504th Regt’s landing zone in a bow around Hatert to Honinghutje while a company of 504th Regt advances on the main road from Nederasselt up to there.
The SS company that destroyed Hatert bridge before dawn has been evaporated in a pincer attack. Grave bridge could not have been taken this turn.

Sector of US 101st Airborne Div

The division’s battalions that remained in Britain on turn one have all been dropped and only a few regimental and divisional support companies and the divisional headquarter have been left back as a reserve for later drops and due to the lack of airtransport capacity. The most part of them has been dropped or landed respectively in the south of the bridgehead near Son and Best. One fresh battalion has been sent to Best to dig in and to reinforce the 2nd/502 Bn and another one to Son in the hope to capture the bridge there with one last attack; that finally didn’t succeed so that the bridge is still in enemy hands. North of the main combat zone minor attacks have been carried out against retreated german garrison companies that also have not been successfull. The fresh 3rd/506 Para Bn has been sent towards Schjindel to recon the area and cover this flank. It might well be possible that the enemy has positioned some companies there to wait for a good chance for a counterattack; this supposition was underpinned by the discovery of a german battalion headquarter southwest of this village. The situation didn’t change in Uden. After a failed attack on a german mortar company 1st/501 Para Bn and the regimental engineering company have been ordered to entrench, hold ground and wait for XXX Corps. In the “Zuid-Willems/Wilhelmina canal perimeter” the village Lieshout cold have been captured.

XXX Corps

On the outer left flank, 151 Infantry Bde from 50 Northumberland has been released and has immediatly begun to cross the Meuse-d'Escault Canal against german resistance. Units from 1024.Grenadier Regt, positioned on the northern side of the canal, could not have been forced to retreat, but will find themselves in a quite unfavourable situation if they won't be taken back during the morning. North of Luyksgestel, outflanking maneuvres have been carried out against the german front while some small attacks along the road couldn't force the enemy to retreat. The frontline there reaches now to the village of Weebosch west of the road.
In the centre along the main road the Jagdpanzer section of KG Heinke lost 5 tanks and finally gave up its position, retreating northwest. The enemy line has been crushed and was penetrated at three points. A recon section of 19 King's Royal Hussars has penetrated two kilometres on the main road, while a few kilometres further east the village Schaaft with two companies and a battalion headquarter is almost completely encircled.
On the eastern flank the villages Budel and Cranendonck have been captured and the enemy lost another two companies. The enemy garrison of Lezen fled in disorder before a single shot was fired and was wiped out during its retreat by the Princess Irene Bde, which has reached the village Midbul in the late morning, the new position of 19.SS Regt's artillery.
Massive artillery bombardments have been orderd on enemy positions, especially in the centre, to wear them down and to soften them up for following attacks in the afternoon.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

Enemy pressure on the Arnhem bridgehead continues, but this turn enemy operations were focused on the western and northern part of the airborne bridgehead, while the eastern frontline was relatively calm. 9.SS Aufklärung continued its attack, being supported by security companies and various units of other formations. The 11 Para Bn had to retreat again under constant pressure from the enemy, who pushed deep into the rear area, overrunning a supply drop zone near the railroad between Ede and Arnhem thus cutting off 156 Para Bn at Ede from supply. Renkum has been relieved from the west, while an enemy attack out of the village to the east forced an airborne company to retrat. Air recon found out that the enemy has formed a line west of Renkum reaching at least four kilometres to the north. It is possible that this line will link up with 9.SS Aufklärung further north, which would close the gap for the retreat of 156 Para Bn. In the eastern sector, the so-called "city front", no significant enemy actions were reported.
Again, german reinforcements have been spotted heading to Arnhem from the east, among them Panzergrenadiers of 19.Panzer Regt, unidentified artillery and support units of II.SS Panzer Corps.

As it was expected, the enemy has begun a counteroffensive against 82nd Airborne in the Reichswald area with a regimental sized force (406.Landschütz.Regt ?) consisting of three kampfgruppen (Fürstenberg, Stargaard and Greschick), whose attacks have all been repulsed by the prepared allied troops. However, a german flak section managed to sneak into the unoccupied village Wylen. Enemy forces at Nijmegen have counterattacked two weakened companies on the road Groesbeek - Nijmegen and forced them to retreat.

The enemy strength in the sector of 101st Airborne is increasing. The germans have brought in another four infantry battalions, of which KG 347.Bn has reached the allied front at St.Oedenrode and I/2.FJ Regt has reinforced the enemy in the Best sector. The other two battalions, I/1035.Infantry Regt and 59.Fusilier Bn, have been spotted moving out of the Boxtel area, but their destination and current position is unknown. The enemy set up some unsuccessfull attacks near Best and has destroyed the road bridge at Best and the railroad bridge a few kilometres southwest of it.

In the XXX Corps sector some german units in the centre and on the right flank have tried to escape the "meatgrinder" and have retreated, while the enemy stayed in place at the right flank and was reinforced by one company. There were no other significant enemy actions in this area.

Turn 6 (Afternoon, September 18th)

General Situation

Enemy pressure on the Arnhem bridgehead has reached a new peak. With an entire battalion cut off, another completely forced to retreat and 4th Para Bde's supply drop zone overrun, the operational plan has to be reconsidered. It is clear by now that the initial plan, which saw 1st Airborne heading for too many objectives at once, was a mistake. Also the enemy strength has been underestimated. The new operational focus is set on the city of Arnhem itself with its vital bridge and on the forming of a continous defence line able to resist upcoming enemy attacks. The situation in 82nd AB's area is relatively stable. It is expected that the last resistance in the Grave/Heumen area will be broken this afternoon, freeing up more units for the attack on Nijmegen. 101st Airborne is under pressure by enemy forces on its western front; it is estimated that it can deal with this threat by forming a defence line and executing a kind of active defence tactics. If Son bridge can be taken undestroyed, Best bridge would only be a minor objective. All offensive operations except the capture of Son bridge will be halted due to overstretching. XXX Corps has significantly weakened the enemy whose lines are imminent to collapse. A major breakthrough is expected within the next 12 hours.

Reinforcements

The 9th Infantry Bde from British 3rd division has arrived due to the release of german forces from garrison status in the area of Weert.

Arnhem (Br. 1st Airborne Div)

Plugging the gaps and forming an improvised line were the primary tasks for the 1st this afternoon. The cut off 156 Para Bn has broken contact with the enemy at Ede and is heading east to link up with the bulk of the division. 1st and 2nd para Bns have been ordered to swarm out their concentrated forces at Renkum to avoid being outflanked or encircled. As they followed their orders it became clear that the enemy would well have been able to do so as he had already established a line leading north through the forest near Renkum which might have served him as a jumping point for an outflanking operation. Units from the Schaarsbergen front have been detached to plug the gaps in front of 9.SS Aufklärung together with AT companies that have been dropped in the morning hours. The allied power in this sector is too weak to counterattack the SS armoured recon company, that overrun the supply drop zone. The line that was built is only improvised, so the situation could not be cleared entirely yet.
A massive attack on Arnhem by the task force collected during the morning was a bloody failure. Directly west of city, the mass of the defenders retreated, but a SS engineer company repulsed all attacks and caused heavy losses to british paratroopers.
Enemy reinforcements that were massing northeast of Arnhem have been bombarded by the RAF.

Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne Div)

The last resistance in the Heumen/Grave area has been broken. Grave bridge is in allied hands and still intact. A small force of worn down companies will be left to garrison the bridge and the river crossing at Overasselt while collecting supplies and reinforcements. The mass of the troops will join the assault on Nijmegen and move into positions during the night.
The 80 AA Bn has driven back the enemy line south of Nijmegen. 508th Regt has been ordered to exploit the small gap in the enemy line southwest of Beek and has cut the road from Nijmegen to Beek. A massive attack on the enemy forces in this village from the east was unsuccessfull and caused again heavy losses for both sides.
The village Wyler has been reoccupied and the eastern defence perimeter was slightly reinforced by a few AT companies.

Sector of US 101st Airborne Div

The focus of 101st AB's operations is set on the southern half of its bridgehead. All advances have been stopped due to overstretching. One single, small attack in the northern part of the bridgehead drove enemy garrison units away from the Veghel/Leest bridge. Further south a similar and also successfull attack has been set up against enemy forces near St.Oedenrode.
While allied lines in the west of the bridgehead have been lengthened, reinforced and fresh units have been brought in to plug the gaps it turned out that enemy forces have formed a continous line reaching from 2kilometres west of St.Oedenrode south to Best. The german units guarding the northern access to Best bridge refused to offer resistance to a probing attack and retreated. D-company of 2/502 Para Bn has advanced into the abandoned position, followed by an engineer company which is still one kilometre behind. But it is quite possible that the enemy will set up a counterattack on this exposed company which may force it to retreat.
Son bridge finally felt into allied hands! The Son task force's further orders will be to guard the bridge, drive further south to recon Eindhoven (if possible) and to reinforce the western defence line, while a part of these units will be held in reserve..

XXX Corps

This was XXX Corps' turn! Oberst Walter, commander of the Division "Walter", that offered such stubborn resistance to the Corps' advance has been captured on the run as the bulk of his forces has been destroyed.
On the left flank 50 Northumberland supported by 7 Royal Dragoons Bn has smashed the enemy line in front of it. The road is by now blocked by just two worn down companies. The relatively good shaped enemy units in the marsh between the two roads on the left flank are in danger of being encircled. In the centre enemy resistance has collapsed, too. Only a few retreated AA/AT companies and two HQ units are currently in front of the Corps. An enemy HQ unit and a Fusilier company have been surrounded in the village Schaft. 19.SS Regt has been almost completely evaporated. Midbuul is in allied hands. The Princess Irene Bde will probably stay there with defensive orders as recon estimates that german forces around Weert (further west) have been released from reserve.
On the extreme left flank 151 Infantry Bde managed to cross the Meuse-D'Escault Canal and pushed two german infantry companies out of their fortified positions.
The 9th Bde of British 3rd Infantry has been sent north to Bocholt. Its further tasks will depend on enemy actions but will not be something very different than giving flank cover in the area west of the corps' advance route.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

Again the enemy has brought in reinforcements, though not as much as over the last turns. Also, several formations have been released from reserve status in the eastern part of the theatre.

In the Arnhem area support units of 21.SS PzGren Regt, the battalion sized KG Sonnenstuhl and units directly assigned to II.SS Panzer Korps have entered the theatre from the northeast. East of Arnhem only minor quality units (some Marine infantry and Security companies) have been moved to the front. Units of KG Euling have been spotted moving south across the Arnhem bridge. As an engineering company of 19.SS PzGren has occupied the railroad bridge near Oosterbeek it might be possible that the enemy is planning an assault into the back of allied forces across this bridge. The other possibility is that KG Euling has been tasked with securing the southern access to the bridge and/or with occupying possible landing zones of the polish AB Bde. The enemy executed only a few attacks against this bridgehead of which one forced B+C/11 Para Bn to retreat and another one directly west of the city led to heavy losses for both sides ( a company of 10.SS Aufklärung evaporated and five british companies were forced to retreat while the position could be held by one single company). 3.SS Wacht Bn is trying to keep contact with the retreating 156 Para Bn.

Near Nijmegen, in the Reichswald area, a new but small enemy formation could have been identified, the KG? Unteroffiziersschule. Massive enemy activity was noticed in the Reichswald, mainly units heading south towards Milsbeek. Enemy attacks south of Kranenburg and against Milsbeek could have been repulsed.
It seems the enemy is running out of troops south of the city (Nijmegen) as he has tasked rear area troops (a MP company and a supply unit) with plugging gaps in his line.

Units of 180.Infantry Div, namely the I/1222 GrenBn, could have been spotted near Vendraji, which is about twenty kilometres southeast of Milsbeek. Their destination and current position are unknown at the moment. It might be possible that the enemy has sent them further east to block the road between 101st and 82nd AB's landing zones. Or the enemy is collecting a force to attack in the area of Grave or Mook, which is regarded more possible by allied command.

Enemy forces west of 101st AB's landing zone have again been reinforced. Support units of 59.Inf Div (at Schijndel) and a KG Rink (destination/position unknown) could have been identified. The only enemy attack was set up against a company of 3/502 Para Bn southwest of St.Oedenrode. Being worn out by the battles over the last day this company has retreated, but the enemy didn't advance into the location. Overall situation didn't change.

A few companies in front of XXX Corps retreated to the north, no other enemy activity there. Whereas in the region between Mejel and Neroeteren enemy Fallschirmjägers have begun operations. Air recon has spotted the following formations: Near Meyel the FJ Regt Laytved-Hardinger, units of FJ Regt Hübner near Weert and 17 km south of this town and the FJ Bn Schäfer, which crossed the Meuse-D'Escault Canal northwest of Neeroeteren, being stopped by units of the fresh 9th Infantry Bde.

Turn 7 (Night, September 18th)

General Situation

As it is night only major operations will be continued. These are: Pushing the breakthrough of XXX Corps and the attack against Nijmegen. British 1st Airborne is ordered to rest and to resupply. Also the most part of the airforce has to rest this turn for being fully operational in the morning to cover the airdrop of the polish airborne brigade.
The enemy has again brought in his Luftwaffe says the air report. Which airbases the enemy is using could not have been determined yet.

Arnhem (British 1st Airborne Div)

Another attack against the SS reconaissance unit which still occupies 4th Para Bde's supply drop zone was unsuccessfull. 156 Para Bn is continuing its retreat towards friendly lines, one company is now again in contact with allied troops north of 4th Para Bde's former supply head while the rest of the battalion is still two kilometres behind. The frontline west of the city has been regrouped and worn down troops have been taken back into the rear area.
The railroad bridge near Oosterbeck has been blown by the enemy.

Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne Div)

Operations against Nijmegen have been continued. South of the city several german companies retreated in the face of the attackers. US troops have penetrated the enemy lines at several points and have cut off two companies of 6.Landschutz Regt. An attack against these two companies was unsuccessfull. The units near Beek had to rest.
The 1/504 Bn has digged in around Grave and the 2/504 Bn has been sent north to Hatert. A small attack by the allied forces already present against the garrison of Hatert has been repulsed by the enemy.

Sector of US 101st Airborne Div

The retreated garrison of Son held its ground south of the bridge against an allied attack. Allied troops have been sent over the bridge bypassing the enemy to get into better positions for a later attack. The neutralisation of the enemy units there is important for a fast passage of the Corps. 2/327 Glider Bn was sent to Landing zone C to recover and to serve as a kind of reserve for the Best front. Another attack was ordered near Best, north of the railroad bridge. Luckily the enemy retreated before combat and a company of 502 Para Regt advanced into the enemy position directly north of the railroad bridge. An engineering company has been ordered to repair the broken road bridge near Best.

XXX Corps

Breakthrough! 1st Armour smashed away the remaining defenders left and right of the main road and has reached Valkenswaard en masse (where enemy artillery was forced to retreat and a german supply unit was destroyed). The surrounded german remnants near Schaft have “surrendered”. The fresh and rested 8th Armoured Bde will take over the leading position during the corps’ advance as planned.
On the right flank, two worn down companies (one AT, one Bn-HQ) have been destroyed. Due to recent developments Princess Irene Brigade and 7 Somerset light Bn/43 and have been ordered to advance to Weert instead to stay near Midbuul. The advancing units were halted by german paratroopers (maybe from FJ Regt Hübner) a few kilometres outside of the village.
43 RAC has been ordered to recon the area north of Midbuul. The 1.KOSB Bn of 9 Inf Bde has reached Midbuul and will be tasked with supporting Princess Irene Bde. The rest of the brigade is ordered to remain further south near Bocholt, where it has blocked FJ Bn Schäfer, that has crossed the Meuse-D'Escault Canal in one place.
The entire right flank has to be regrouped after the Corps’ breakthrough.(New dispositions and operational plans will be presented in the next AAR).
On the extreme left flank the germans have lost about an entire battalion during the attack of 151 Inf Bde. Near Luyksgestel two enemy companies have been evaporated and by now the road to Westerhoven seems to be free. If 50 Northumberland manages to meet with the Irish Guards company south of this village an enemy force in the size of two battalions will be encircled in the swampy area south of the village.

Setting up a time schedule for XXX Corps – Looking at the map and roughly calculating the distances i came to the following estimations:
  • Son bridge could be reached in the morning or afternoon of the 19th (turn 9 or 10).
  • Uden could be reached in the morning of the 20th (turn 12).
  • Grave might be reached in the night or pre-dawn of the 20th (turn 14). The Corps will need one and a half turns from Grave to Nijmegen, which means Nijmegen bridge could be crossed during the afternoon of the 21st (turn 16) if in friendly hands(!).
  • Let's give the corps two turns time to break possible enemy resistance on the "island". This would mean the Corps could reach Arnhem bridge at pre-dawn of the 22nd (turn 18).
I think these estimations are quite optimistic. Here are the weak points:

  • There is absolutely no information about the enemy strength in Eindhoven
  • It is unknown if the enemy has already blocked or will have the possibility to block the road between Uden and Grave (in addition to the garrison of Uden)
  • Will 82nd AB take Nijmegen bridge before the enemy will blow it?
  • Will there be strong resistance on the "island"?
  • It has not been considered to give the corps one or two turns time to rest and recover.
  • Depending on developments the corps can't simply afford to rest...

Enemy dispositions and reactions:

The enemy has massively attacked the airborne bridgeheads during night, especially at Arnhem and near Best. At Arnhem only one attack was succesfull for the enemy, which forced an AT company west of Wolfheze to give up its position. The gap is closing in for 156 Para Bn; only a one kilometre hole in the enemy lines is left for it to slip through.
In the 82nd AB’s bridgehead all enemy attacks have been repulsed, though one company of 2/508th Para Regt south of Kranenburg has suffered enormous losses against overhelming enemy strength.
Also all enemy attacks against the “Best front” of 101st Airborne could have been repulsed.
On the right flank of XXX Corps a unit of FJR Hübner has driven back the AT company of Princess-Irene-Bde and advanced in a fierce rush four kilometres into allied controlled terrain.

No significant enemy movement except elements of KG Rink and 1035.Grenadier Regt as well as support units of 59.Infanterie Div moving near Best (destination unknown).

Turn 8 (Pre-dawn, september 19th)

General situation

This is the second PM turn, offensive operations in the Airborne bridgeheads will again be limited to the absolute necessary.
For the safe air-drop of the polish airborne brigade in the morning (next turn) it is absolutely important to regain air control and to knock the enemy air force out of the game. Massive air strikes against enemy bases are ordered this turn, a task not too easy for the RAF as it is still night and there are no night fighters or bombers available.

Arnhem (British 1st AB)

No offensive operations were conducted in the Arnhem area, just some troop movement to stabilize the frontline. 156 Para Bn continued its retreat to friendly lines but was only able to march one kilometre towards the east. The men are exhausted, surrounded by enemy forces (from three sides) and the terrain is difficult. There is only a one kilometre wide gap left in the enemy lines for the battalion to slip through. Probably the enemy will close this gap before the morning and the battalion will have to fight its last kilometer back

Nijmegen (US 82nd AB)

Two companies were taken out of the Nijmegen sector to strengthen the Reichswald defence line. No offensive operations have been ordered in this sector of the bridgehead.
The AT company of 1/504 Para has been ordered to move south to recon the road to Uden and to the 101st AB sector.
An allied company has reached Honighutje from the southwest while an engineer company has occupied Somerchen. The bridge and the village (Honighutje) are garrisoned by the enemy, but the attack to seize the bridge and the village has to be delayed until Hatert has been cleared from the enemy to free up enough troops for a succesfull attack. Though having been bombarded and attacked repeatedly, the garrison of this village is still offering stubborn and desperate resistance.
An attack south of Nijmegen against two Landschutz companies and another one west of Beek have been repulsed by the enemy, who suffered heavy losses (as allied troops also did).

US 101st AB sector

Elements of 327th and 401st Glider Regt which have crossed the Wilhelmina Canal to the south to secure the road between Son and Eindhoven for XXX.Corps have pushed the former garrison of Son out of its new position and forced them to retreat into the swampy area west of the road. No other attacks have been carried out in 101st AB’s sector.

XXX Corps

The spearhead of XXX Corps, consisting of the 44.Royal Tank Regiment, 8.Armoured Bde and the bulk of 1.Armour Div has reached the outskirts of Eindhoven, without having met any resistance. A single anti-air section east of the city centre is the only enemy unit that has been spotted. During the advance of the Corps, several pockets of enemy remainders have been created on its flanks, of which one (a HQ and a Artillery battery) northeast of Schaft has already been eliminated by elements of 43.Wessex Div. The biggest pocket is the one of the rest of 6.FJ Regt, which has been trapped two kilometres west of the main road by 50.Northumberland. Several pockets are in the process of creation on the extreme left flank by 151.Inf Bde/50.Div which is facing the german 1035.Inf Regt/59.Inf Div. The company from FJ Regt Hübner that has advanced to Midbul has also been encircled.

The right flank has been slightly regrouped, the formations there are tasked with protecting the Corp’s flanks. The „Duke of Cornwall“ Bn/43. and the 43.RAC Bn will lead the advance on a line Leende - Heeze - Hout - Geldorp - Woensel - Opwetten - Beek. Following troops will take over key positions like bridges, crossroads and towns etc. from the advance units to secure them while the lead elements will continue their advance.
Princess Irene Bde and 1.KOSB/9.Inf Bde are tasked to deal with the enemy units supposed to be around Weert The most part of 9.Inf Bde will operate in the triangle Kinroei-Neeroeteren-Bocholt/Leezen, tasked with containing the enemy. As supply is low in this area and it is only a „side-theatre“, offensive operations in this area will be limited.

During the air battle both, the RAF/USAF and the german Luftwaffe suffered heavy losses, but it is believed that the Luftwaffe won’t be anymore able to interdict the planned airdrop of the polish airborne brigade in the morning.

Enemy dispositions and reactions:

Again the enemy brought in reinforcements. Enemy units directly west of the city of Arnhem have been reinforced by elements of 20.SS PzGren Regt. II/FJR Greve & KG Budde have been spotted in the area southeast of Cook, near Oeffelt, while the reconaissance battalion of 180.Inf Division, supported by divisional artillery has reached 504th Regt’s landing zone south of Grave. It seems the enemy is going to open a new front in the south of 82nd airborne’s bridgehead.
The 107.Panzer Bde has been spotted northeast of Deurne. Southwest of St.Oedenrode (in the 101st AB’s sector) the enemy has thrown the Kampfgruppe Jungwirth into the battle and elements of 1035. And 1036.Infanterie Regt have been spotted moving near Best. East and southeast of XXX Corps‘ right flank there is still enemy activity. At Neeroeteren, the FJ Bn Schluckebier has crossed the Meuse-D‘escault canal. A company of FJ Regt Hübner was spotted by air recon while trying to sneak into the village Lezen and enemy Fallschirmjägers were spotted moving towards Weert.

The enemy continued its attacks against the airborne bridgeheads and even managed to increase pressure.
At Arnhem the retreating 156.Para Bn was encircled and will have to fight the last two kilometres back to friendly lines. During massive attacks, two british parachute companies evaporated, but the enemy didn’t gain any ground and was not able to disrupt the frontline.

The 2nd Bn of 508 Para Regt near Kranenburg has been badly mauled in an enemy attack and lost its F-company; the E-company of the battalion was forced to retreat and suffered heavy losses, so that the northern end of the Reichswald front lost its balance and is in danger to break. The enemy has launched attacks on the entire Reichswald front, but was nowhere succesfull except at Kranenburg.

During the fierce battles on the western front of 101st Airborne’s sector one company near Best was forced to retreat, but the front as a whole did hold.

The line of Princess-Irene Bde east of Midbul withstood the enemy counterattacks. In the rest of the Corps‘ sector it was quite calm.

The Luftwaffe suffered heavy casualties and lost three air squadrons sais the RAF report.

Turn 9 (Morning, september 19th)

General situation

British 1st Airborne is currently forced to stay on the defence, it doesn’t look like the division will go on the offensive again for the duration of the opeation. It is hoped that the landing of the Polish Airborne Brigade (from now PAB) south of the city will drain enough enemy attention and reserves away from the pocket to give the british some kind of relief
If the enemy continues his offensive against 82nd AB and is able to really open a new front in the south of the bridgehead, the division might not be able to continue its attack against Nijmegen. To avoid this, the 82nd is ordered to seize Nijmegen bridge at all costs before dusk and has priority in receiving tactical air support.
US 101st Airborne is strong enough to withstand all enemy attacks on its western frontline, but being forced to deal with an enemy force in the size of at least an entire division, the eastern flank of 101st Airborne is stripped from units and is hanging in the air. Though the terrain east of the landing zone limits the movement of a potential attacking force to a few spots which can easily be defended with a few units, this danger will only be banned when 43.RAC Bn will have reached the area on its advance on XXX Corps‘ right flank. And with the arrival of 107.Panzer Brigade near Deurne this must happen soon.

Reinforcements:

-Polish Airborne Brigade (three battalions plus the brigade‘s support units)
-1st Airborne Army HQ, Lt-Gen. Brereton
-XVIII Airborne Corps HQ, Lt-Gen. Ridgway
-XXX Corps‘ boats

Arnhem (British 1st AB)

The division took parts of its northern line back and has digged in in the more defensible forest terrain two kilometres further south thus also shortening the line to free up some troops for reserve purposes. 156th Para Bn has destroyed a SS Wacht section laying in its retreat route but was not able to take advantage of its free back and had to stay in place. The divisional artillery gave support fire to the PAB which landed south of Arnhem this morning.

South of Arnhem (Polish AB Bde)

The PAB has landed directly south of Arnhem in two landing zones on each side of the main road. The 1st Bn and the headquarter of Lt.-Gen Sosabowski have landed west of the road and the 2nd and 3rd Bns have landed east of the road, between Elden and Huissel. The brigade’s objective is to take and hold Arnhem bridge. In the first morning hours the villages Elden and Huissel have been occupied and the brigade is in contact with the enemy in two places. After the capture of Huissel it was discovered that the opposite shore of the Rhine is occupied by strong enemy forces, which deny a possible river crossing. This means the brigade can only go for the bridge from the southern side in a direct assault, probably a bloody enterprise regarding the amount of german artillery support.

Nijmegen (US 82nd AB)

As outlined above the Division has begun a major offensive against Nijmegen and was able to push the entire enemy frontline one kilometer back, inflicting (while also suffering) heavy losses. The village Beek, east of Nijmegen, could have been cleared from the enemy, but US forces there will have to screen out against a new enemy line from the village Wyler reaching through Zyfflich to the Rhine.
Hatert finally fell into allied hands; the forces which have been involved in this battle will be assigned the task to clear Honighutje and Somerchen before reinforcing the Grave sector.
The position near Kranenburg, lost during the night after an enemy attack, has been reoccupied after a fierce battle. The village Cruyk, south of Mook bridge has been evacuated to send an additional company towards Grave which might get under pressure soon.

US 101st AB sector

This sector was almost calm. An exposed company of 2.FJ Regt was attacked soutwest of St.Oedenrode but could not have been forced to retreat. Elements of 401st and 327th Glider Regt have continued their thrust towards Eindhoven and forced the former garrison of Son to surrender. A recon section has headed south and it is currently just two kilometres away from the spearhead of XXX Corps.
It is planned to assault Uden a second time in the afternoon in the hope to clear the advance route before the corps‘ forward elements arrive.

XXX Corps

Heavy fighting on the corps‘ left flank and at Eindhoven. After preceding artillery bombardment, 151st Bde overran an entire battalion of 1024.Inf Regt. The other two brigades of the 50th eliminated the bulk of the pocket west of the road to Valkenswaard. In the area west of the main advance route only II/1024.Inf Regt and a few scattered troops of Division Walter are still offering resistance, but it is believed that the mobbing up actions will be finished in the afternoon, so that 50th Northumberland can advance further north.
Eindhoven has been defended by a handfull of entrenched anti-air sections of which the most part has been smashed by the advancing spearhead. East of the city the Corps already crossed the D’Embrana-Hement canal. The advance can be continued at full speed in the afternoon. The right flank has reached the village Hout east of Eindhoven. Enemy Fallschirmjägers at Midbul have surrendered.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

The enemy has received some reinforcements and also shifted many troops to the front. The 280.Sturm Abt. (probably an assault gun battalion) entered the Arnhem area from the north. 156.Para Bn has again been encircled as it was unable to move towards friendly lines. The enemy has sent first troops in reaction to the landing of the PAB towards its landing zone. Elements of 19.SS PzGren Regt are in contact with the polish brigade. Reserve units crossed Wargeningen bridge and have been moving west on the southern Rhine shore; by luck the enemy might arrive piecemail.
Massive enemy troop movement was detected in the Nijmegen area. Air recon has identified enemy artillery moving en masse towards the village Pannenden, from where it could at least reach the northern part of the Nijmegen bridgehead and also the LZ of the PAB. Elements of 19.SS PzGren and KG Euling have reinforced the enemy garrison of Nijmegen. II/FJ Regt AuE Greve and Kampfgruppe Budde have moved to Cruyk and took positions south of Mook bridge, while a luftwaffe infantry battalion has crossed Oeffelt bridge with the same destination. The 1022.Grenadier Regt has been spotted moving north near St.Anthonis, which is around twenty kilometres southwest of Grave.
107.Pz Bde has left Deurne and probably took position near Helmond. It is estimated that the brigade will enter the battle at full strength before dawn.
The FJ Regt Laytved-Hardinger was spotted moving towards Weert from the northeast. It seems the enemy is willing to set up a bigger battle on this flank.

As before dawn, the airborne bridgheads have been under immense pressure, though enemy operations didn’t reach that level as in the previous night. Two companies had to retreat on 1st AB‘s northern front, while directly west of Arnhem the enemy gained one kilometre of ground. During an attack against Heelsum one enemy company evaporated.
Again the enemy attacked Milsbeek and forced one para company to retreat. At Best (Nijmegen) one position had to be given up due to an enemy attack. All in all the frontlines were stable.

Note: I've been tweaking around with the various mods, so don't bother about the different unit colours and terrains etc. in the screenies. Screenshots show the situation after german turn 9.

Ah, you're from hex 13/63 ! I can assure you it didn't get ruined yet, though there are some heavy battles going on just south of there. Believe me I'd try to keep schjindel intact, if this **** german General would not have moved his HQ into the town...:clown:

Edit: It seems to be written wrong, too...

anyway, nice reading
Corrected the place names.
In my defence, my sources had gotten them wrong.
As a Norwegian I frequently see our own names spelled wrong, ie British/Americans like to spell out great composer's name Greig instead of Grieg.

Let's continue with the AAR...:) Suggestions and constructive critics are welcome

Turn 10 ( Afternoon, September 19th)

General Situation

For the first time since the last two days, the enemy was able to manoeuver massively in the daylight as the RAF still has to recover from the air strikes carried out against german air bases before dawn. Though enemy pressure on the airborne bridgeheads decreased a bit, but regarding the massive troop movements detected and current dispositions recon estimates that the allied airborne divisions awaits a hard night.
The landing of the PAB immediatly drained reserves from the other hot spots of the battle and seems to work as planned. It seems the sole possibility of a river crossing at Huissel lets the germans keep the opposite shore occuppied, draining even more reserves.
In the south there seem to be two minor battles evolving, one for the city Weert, where the enemy has sent a parachute infantry regiment to defend it and one near Helmond, where the 107.Panzer brigade is assembling.
XXX Corps makes its way north where it is desperately needed as german troops are now outnumbering the allied paratroopers by approx. 2:1 and none of the airborne divisions has any reserves left currently.

Arnhem

British 1st AB

The division is still on the defence. On the western front, 156 Para Bn has linked up again with the friendly line after a combined operation with frontline units to open its back. An infantry company of KG Schulz has been encircled during this operation. On the city front, the frontline had to be regrouped again after the last enemy attack. The germans abandoned their previously gained ground and retreated after a probing attack directly west of the city centre.

Polish airborne brigade

The 3rd battalion of the PAB encircled a Panzergrenadier company of 19.SS PzGren Regt near Driel which has broken through to the rhine in the morning. The 1st and 2nd battalion have assaulted SS companies which have approached the brigade after its landing. Units of KG Euling have been beaten back to the rhine and a headquarter unit on the brigade’s eastern flank has suffered heavy losses and retreated. If the enemy will not bring in reinforcements from the north, the assault on the bridge will begin in the early night hours, carried out by the 2nd and 3rd battalion.

An entrained battalion has been bombarded by the RAF south of the PAB’s landing zone, but german fighters interdicted, causing massive losses to the bomber wings. The damage to the enemy ground units is expected to be low. Another ground bombing was conducted against enemy artillery (from II.SS PzKorps) massed in and around the village Pannenden, 15 kilometres northeast of Nijmegen, but also here the RAF took heavy casualties while the inflicted damage was relatively small. From this position the enemy artillery reaches both bridgeheads (Nijmegen and Arnhem) and may cause severe problems especially for the troops attacking Nijmegen.

Nijmegen (US 82nd AB)

Allied troops drove the enemy another kilometre back and are now standing in front of the city centre and two kilometres away from the bridge. During this operation a group of worn-down enemy units has been cut off in the forests southeast of the city, among them a regimental supply column and the HQ of V.SS Ersatz. The battle was very bloody and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy as also on own troops. At Beek the enemy has been driven back further, so that the german troops at Nijmegen are now almost isolated from the ones on the northeastern front of 82nd Airborne. .
On the Reichswald front an attack south of Kranenburg resulted in the destruction of one enemy infantry company and the reoccupation of the position lost to the enemy in the morning.
The units that were freed up after the occupation of Hatert have moved across the Maas-Waal canal to participate in the attack against Nijmegen instead of attacking Somerchen. One company has been sent south to reinforce the Grave defence line, while the engineers of the 508th Regt are working on the bridge to become passable again.
Though the Nijmegen front has been constantly pushing back the enemy, this operation is in danger of becoming a kind of Phyrrus-victory, as the units in front of the city have suffered enormous losses and are in low readiness and supply that in the case of an enemy counterattack they would have no other choice than to retreat. All in all the northern front is in no good shape and the western front is hanging in the air. The Corps is desperatly awaited here.

Sector of US 101st AB

In the most part of the bridgehead it was calm. The Corps‘ spearhead ( 8th Armoured Bde) has passed Son bridge and lead elements almost have reached St.Oedenrode at sunset. Operations have been conducted against Uden, Beek and enemy troops in the marshes north of Eindhoven. Despite heavy losses the enemy still holds his ground at Uden. The garrison of Beek still withstands all attacks. The enemy also could not have been forced to retreat out of his position north of Phillips factory near Eindhoven. South of Son bridge the former garrison of Son retreated further west after an attack by US troops.

XXX Corps

Middle Sector (Advancing spearhead)

Lead elements of the corps have reached St.Oedenrode before sunset. North of Eindhoven the corps had to drive its tankdestroyers and the first battalion of the welsh guards towards Opwetten in reaction to the appeareance of 107.Panzer Bde near Helmond. Northwest of Eindhoven are still some resistance nests that could not have been cleared yet. The small bridge of Heuvel could have been taken against strong artillery barrage from 59.Infanterie Div. The corps artillery has been closing in to the rest of the corps and the first batteries can give support fire to the southern half of 101st airborne’s front at Best.

Western flank (50th Northumberland Div)

151st brigade has cleared the area south of Postel from the last resistance and is currently heading north, where other units of the division are heading towards Oirshot bridge to close the last gap for enemy troops to retreat. Once the area is cleared, the brigade will cross Oirshot bridge to drive into the enemy‘s rear around Best.

Eastern flank (43rd Wessex, Pr.Irene Bde, 9.Inf Bde/3rd Div)

In the south the 9th Bde is still operating against enemy Fallschirmjägers at Neeroeteren. Small progress could have been made east of Midbul and the 7th Somerset light battalion is approaching the enemy at Weert from the northwest. Two tank companies of 8th Armoured Brigade, that were resting near Lommel to resupply have been sent there in the hope to achieve a fast decision.
4th Somerset light battalion has digged in at Heeze bridge to block it and to resupply. It will possibly be sent northwest towards Asten after the night. Duke of Cornwall battalion, followed by 43rd Armoured Car battalion has reached Mierloo and the Wiltshire battalion has been sent to Opwetten in reaction to the appeareance of 107.Panzer Bde. The rest of the 43rd is currently following the rest of the corps to the north.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

Enemy reinforcements have been spotted only north of Arnhem, where a Flak brigade and several machinegun companies, have been moving south to the city centre.Heavy battles arised in the Arnhem area and on the Reichswald front of the 82nd but not with the intesitivity like in the morning.

The Arnhem bridgehead was attacked from each direction, the city’s western quarters have again changed possession and the SS has digged in in the ruins. In the north of the bridgehead the enemy made a progress of one kilometre north of Wolfheze. 156.Para Bn, which has just reestablished contact with friendly lines has been badly mauled. Under pressure from enemy attacks battalion commander Lt.-Col. De Voeux’s headquarter has been rounded up and the second company has been evaporated. Also the enemy managed to relieve his encircled company there.
The PAB has been approached by more enemy troops. German reserve troops and marine infantry being supported by one tank section, have reached Driel, while on the eastern flank a SS Kampfgruppe has established contact with allied troops and driven back an AT section.

In the Nijmegen area the enemy set up a series of unsuccessfull assaults against the Reichswald line. Massive troop movement towards the south has been detected behind the enemy lines there. It seems the enemy is going over to the defence in this area and has begun sending troops over Oeffelt bridge to support 180.Infanterie Div and drive into the southern flank of the 82nd. Units from FJ Regt AuE Greve have already occupied Mook bridge, but the northern end of the bridge is still blocked by a company of 1/505 Para Regt. An assault is awaited there for the pre-dawn hours. Though 1222.Gren Regt (180.Inf) could have been spotted moving south of the Maas river there is no clear information about its current position. No enemy activity south of Nijmegen itself; the troops defending the town have received no reinforcements.

In the 101st airborne’s sector the enemy continued his offensive on the frontline between Best and Schjindel but was nowhere successfull except north of Best, where one position had to be given up. Armoured engineers of 107.Pz Bde have destroyed the eastern bridge at Lieshout.

Enemy activity in the XXX corps‘ sector was limited to the right flank only. 107.Pz Bde has advanced towards allied lines, although not yet at full strength. An armoured recon company has broken into allied lines, forcing half of 1/Welsh Guards Bn to retreat of which one company was overrolled and destroyed. The enemy came to a halt in front of Opwetten where allied armour will be tasked to deal with it. Mierloo bridge, on the advance route of 5.Duke of Cornwall/43. has been occupied by a flak company. In the south the FJ Regt Laytved-Hardinger has reached Weert to enter the battle for the town. No significant enemy activity has been reported from Bocholt and Neeroeteren.

I have made a movie (my first one) showing the operations at Arnhem and in the northern part of the Nijmegen bridgehead during turn 10. The last frame shows the situation after the german turn and has been taken from allied turn 11 - a PM turn, the recon is 0 %, so the german artillery didn't disappear.;)

Turn 11 ( night, september 19th)

General situation

It is estimated that the enemy will set up a new front against 82nd AB‘s bridgehead in its south as he detached substantial forces from this area to the south which were spotted moving westward after crossing the Maas at Oeffelt. The big problem is that 82nd hasn’t any reserves left to encounter this threat and may have to cancel the attack on Nijmegen, a severe stepback. The position of the poles is still very weak. The corps makes its way north through the 101st Airborne’s sector. The front of 101st west of the advance road seems to be stable, resisting continued enemy attacks for 24 hours now. Mobbing up actions in the south will soon come to an end and only in the southwest there seems to arise a bigger battle with enemy fallschirmjägers at Weert.

Due to a lack in allied communications operations could not have been carried out according to plans. As a result most of the planned attacks had to be cancelled. This might have been the chance to take Nijmegen as the enemy has not brought in reinforcements in the afternoon and his troops there are more than worn-down.

Arnhem

Br.1st AB Div

Due to the landing of the polish brigade south of Arnhem the division got a kind of relief as the enemy detached his reserves from Arnhem to there. In the west of the bridgehead dropzone Y could have been retaken and new supply drops can begin there immediatly. The rest of the division was occupied with reforming the lines and shifting worn down units into the rear.

Polish Airborne Bde

Due to a lack in allied communications the brigade could not follow the attack plans accordingly. The retrating units of KG Euling could have been beaten and lost cohesion but the attack against the bridge could not start while the brigade’s current positions literally invites the enemy to counterattack. An attack against SS east of Driel failed.

Nijmegen (US 82nd AB Div)

Except some troopshifting to strenghten the divisions‘ southern defence, the area remained calm. Like everywhere the planned attacks couldn’t have been carried out due to a lack and breakdown of communications which in this case is a bitter pill as the defence of the city has never been that weak since the beginning of market garden. The chance to take it by the 82nd alone might be lost if the enemy manages to scratch some reinforcements to head for the city.
At Grave the 504th Regt and the enemy are still staring each other as no side seems to be strong enough to go over to the attack.

Sector of 101st Airborne Division

The paratroopers in the division’s northern part had no sleep. 1&2/501st Regt and 3/506th Regt have been ordered to advance towards Schijndel to take enemy attention and pressure away from the front directly north of Best. Resistance was surprisingly small but the initial successes couldn’t have been exploited. The troops near Son have been ordered to march to the supply drop zone of 502nd Regt northwest of Best to resupply and to serve as a reserve force.

XXX Corps

Middle Sector & Advancing spearhead

The corps‘ spearhead has reached Uden at midnight. Yet there is still a german garrison north of Uden that surely will do everything to slow down the allied advance. The Corps is currently building a 54 km long vehicle column all the way down to Valkenswaard.
Tankdestroyers and a small armoured force have been sent towards Opwetten and Helmond where the attack of 107.Panzer Bde is expected. Units of 43rd Wessex have linked up with an anti-tank gun company of the 101st at Lieshout, north of Opwetten. The german recon company that has broken into allied lines in the afternoon has been pocketed. An armoured company of II/Grenadier has been ordered to drive northwest from Eindhoven to Best to recon the area and to establish contact with the 101st’s eastern flank.

Western Flank (50th Northumberland Div)

After assisting to break the last enemy resistance at Heuvel bridge, 1st Dorsetshire Bn of 50th Div has been ordered to head for the roadbridge at Oirshot to block the last possible escape route to the north for the german units still operating west of the main advance route. Most part of 151st Infantry Bde is still tasked with screening out and clearing the entire area south of Oirshot bridge from the last enemy resistance. Southwest of Luyksgestel there is still a small pocket of the remnants of 1024.Grenadier Regiment. The rest of the division has been ordered to regroup and to follow the bulk of the corps to the north. Hampshire Bn has been ordered to assist the task force at Weert which is facing increasing german resistance.

Eastern flank (43rd Wessex, Pr.Irene Bde, 9th Inf Bde/3rd Div)

4th Somerset Bn has digged in at Heeze, which is still a calm front, to secure the local road- and railroadbridges and the eastern access to the area Eindhoven-Valkenswaard. The armour companies from 15/19th Hussars will enter the battle for Weert in the pre-dawn hours. PcI Bde had to detach one company south to Bocholt where the enemy has brought in another parachute infantry company. Small battles and continuous shelling of enemy positions continue at Neeroeteren.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

The enemy has resumed his offensive against the Arnhem bridgehead with all out attacks at full pace, achieving a breakthrough on the western frontline. An allied force in the size of an enforced battalion is in danger of being cut off and encircled.

The Flak Bde Swoboda has crossed Arnhem bridge to the south forcing a polish AT company to retreat. The enemy has collected a task force from various formations which has established a bridgehead against the polish brigade in the bridge’s south. Maj.-General Sosabowski has been captured after a fierce attack against his headquarter; the entire brigade has suffered such substantial losses and has been delivered such a heavy blow by the enemy that it, or what is left of it, will be ordered to go over to the defence.

Still there is a lot of enemy movement and artillery massing at Pannerden. If he has sent more units over the rhine against the PAB could not be detected.

At Nijmegen the enemy has also renewed his counterattack at full scale. The enemy has reinforced Nijmegen with elements of a german Marine infantry regiment and has partially withdrawn worn down troops, while the encircled enemy troops managed to breakout towards the city.
The FJ Regt AuE Greve has captured Mook bridge and has crossed the river, thus directly threatening 82nd’s rear area. On the northern front allied troops had to give in to enemy pressure at several locations, luckily the enemy was not able to establish a breakthrough in this sector. Milsbeek has been taken by the enemy.

Mierloo bridge has been crossed by an enemy panzer company driving back the entire Duke of Cornwall Bn. The enemy recon unit that could have been surrounded in the afternoon has broken through its encirclement to the west, boldly heading for Son bridge.

Counterattacks at Weert have driven back two companies of 7th Somerset light Bn while on the southern wing of the Weert front the enemy forced the complete line to retreat. The enemy made a small progress at Neeroeteren.

Turn 12 (pre-dawn, september 20th)

General Situation

The enemy has achieved various local successes in his counterattacks in the different areas of the battle, though his advances against the Polish brigade can’t be called just a local success, but a major success in disrupting allied plans. Allied command estimates that the local breakthroughs at Arnhem, Nijmegen and Eindhoven can all be contained before the morning. However the situation south of Arnhem is dangerous and for the Poles it is wether to stay intact as a fighting force or to get overwhelmed.

Arnhem

Br.1st AB Div

On the western flank a retreat of one kilometre has been ordered south of 9.SS’s breakthrough while the troops on the northwestern front have manoeuvered backwards to close the encirclement of the advanced enemy recon company and managed to force them to surrender in a fierce attack. However the front as a whole has moved eastwards as a result of the german attack and dropzone Y, which is still held by an AT company that couldn’t get out in time has to be abandoned again.

Polish Airborne Brigade

Efforts to reduce the german bridgehead south of the bridge and to make some room for the western part of the brigade to link up with the brigade’s main body have failed under heavy losses, mostly due to substantial german artillery fire. The 1st Bn is in reorganization and as supply drops haven’t begun yet there is almost no hope for the brave Poles to recover from the initial german counterattack.

Nijmegen (US 82nd AB Div)

On the city front the division followed the escaped enemy units and is now standing in front of the city centre and one kilometre away from the bridge. B/307.Para Eng has advanced north to the shore of the Waal river, just west of the city. However, the front remained calm as the paratroopers had to rest and the enemy seems to be too strong for the unrested troops. Mook could have been retaken in a counterattack with the forces that had been shifted from Nijmegen towards the bridge in the early night hours. At Kranenburg and the southern Reichswald front the local forces were in no shape to counterattack, they have been ordered to dig in to prevent further german advances.

Sector of US 101st AB Div

The 101st front west of the main road remained calm, one battle south of Schijndel forced a german AT company to retreat, but allied forces took heavy casualties. Situation still stable.

XXX Corps

Advancing spearhead

The corps‘ spearhead has attacked the enemy positions at Uden but was only successfull in driving the supporting mortar company back while the former garrison of Uden offered stubborn resistance north of the city and repulsed all attacks. From the most advanced position of the Corps it’s only eight kilometres to the most southern position of 82nd AB.

Eindhoven – Helmond

Aufklärung/107.Pz Bde has been pocketed and attacked by british armour just two kilometres east of Son bridge and still offers resistance despite having suffered heavy losses, while further east the armoured task force of the Corps has pushed through a small gap in the enemy line and attacked Major Maltzahn’s headquarter who has been forced to retreat. Other attacks north of this position have been unsuccessfull. In the meantime armoured elements of 15/19.Hussars have reached the village Lieshout north of the Wilhelmina canal where a Panzergrenadier company has been detected while further south the Dorsetshire Bn/43 regrouped and digged in next to the 43.Roy AC Bn to stop the german Panzers that have crossed Mierloo bridge. In addition to that this position has been reinforced by two AT companies. It is hoped to deny the enemy the possibility to manouever and eventually trap him between the two major canals and the city of Helmond before he can escape intact.

Northwest of Eindhoven the last enemy resistance nests have been eliminated.

Western Flank (50th Northumberland Div)

The screening and mopping up operations continued, but the advancing units have been halted by enemy fallschirmjägers and engineers that have occupied key positions at two crossroads; resistance was surprisingly strong and the entire advance has come to a temporary halt. The german pocket in the extreme south also still holds.

Eastern flank (43rd Wessex, Pr.Irene Bde, 9th Inf Bde/3rd Div)

The arrival of the two armoured companies at the Weert front has changed the tide again in favour of the combined british-dutch forces. While the weak part of the front could have been regrouped enemy fallschirmjägers had to give in to allied pressure along the main road. At Neeroeteren the shelling of enemy positions continues but no ground actions have been conducted.

Enemy dispositions and reactions

The only reinforcements that could have been spotted being brought in by the germans have been the Kampfgruppen Becker and Greve together with elements of the II.FJ Corps under Gen.Meindl, that were heading towards the Reichswald front of 82nd Airborne.

The enemy continued his offensive against the Arnhem bridgehead and forced the city front of Br 1st Airborne to retreat by one kilometre under heavy losses. On the eastern frontline of the division he also made a few advances, but nowhere more than one kilometre.

Under the immense pressure of elements of 21.SS PzGren Regt and german marine regiments the PAB suffered substantial losses. It is estimated that the next day sees the surrender or capture of the reminders of the brigade that are still desperately defending themselves south of Arnhem bridge. Meanwhile the still intact brits on the northern shore of the rhine can observe which doom awaits them if the Corps won’t make it in time to the city...

The enemy also made further progresses in his offensive against the Groessbeck heights, the supply head of 82nd Airborne. The frontline at Kranenburg has been smashed by enemy attacks and a recon section of KG Fürstenberg managed to break through into the rear and has overrun the supply drop zone of 508th Regt. At Mook all enemy attacks could have been repulsed, but nevertheless an enemy flak section managed to cross the Maas, sneaked through allied lines and took the supply drop zone of 505th Regt in a coup-de-main!

EDIT: The Flak section was only visible in the replay of nemo's turn.

The enemy has also blown the railroad bridge over the Waal river at Nijmegen, but the road bridge is still intact.
More elements of 180.Infanterie Div have been spotted further southwest of the current frontline at Grave.

The enemy continued to attack 101st AB’s western frontline. He managed to push back US paratroopers in several locations, but suffered such heavy losses, especially north of Best, that he should not be able to continue his offensive there.

It seems that the attack of 107.Panzer Bde has been halted by allied troops as the offensive operations of the enemy in the area west of Helmond have only been of minor characteristics.

Further south the enemy set up some small counterattacks against advancing elements of 50.Northumberland south of Oirshot and against the allied task force at Weert, which have only been partially successfull.
