Robin, I think your first situation WAS pretty straight-forward (heck, even I got it. . .)add just one more enemy/building/LOS obstacle/CoT and the whole thing goes out the window sometimes.

There is a comprehensive rout example in J2, pp44-7, so if you've got $300+, routing knowledge is yours. . .
The routing flow-chart is helpful, too. (search WHQ for it, I know its been mentioned here before; that's where I found it.)

Yes, and it has also been included in the 2nd edition of the Rulebook.
By the way, I have J2 and bought it when it was published (as I did with all the Annuals and Journals up to now).
That example is very instructive to read as a whole ; but, as I said previously, it does not help a lot when you want to check a specific situation quickly...
