Loved US chocolate, including Hershey's, growing up. Then I was stationed in Germany. German (and every other European chocolate) has spoiled my palate. I have not finished a Hershey's bar since. I will spend the $$ for European or other high end chocolates.Explains a lot...Hersheys is one of those products that is really popular for reasons unknown to me.

I heard that about 100+ years ago, the making of chocolate bars was a well guarded Swiss secret. Hershey's came up with their milk chocolate recipe on their own, which more or less worked. It became the standard in the US, due to access, volume and low price.
