Welcome to the 18th Annual West Coast Rumble Advanced Squad Leader Tournament!

The West Coast Rumble ASL Tournament (8–10 November 2024) has been proudly hosted in Vancouver, British Columbia for the past 19 years. Our event draws players from the Pacific Northwest (Vancouver Island & the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Oregon, & Washington State), and beyond, including participants from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Yukon, and as far away as California, Oklahoma, New York, and New Brunswick.

Tournament Structure:

The West Coast Rumble is a 4-Round "Swiss Style" Tournament. In this format, players compete against others with the same Win/Loss record in each round. Unlike a Single Elimination format, where one player remains undefeated, the Swiss Style ensures all players participate in all rounds, with the winner determined by the highest total points.

Determining the Winner:

The winner will be the player with the highest point total at the end of the tournament. Points are awarded as follows:
  • 10 points for each win.
  • 1 bonus point for each win by the player's defeated opponents.
  • In the event of a tie, the point totals of the tied players’ opponents will be compared to determine final rankings.
Awards:

Top finishers will receive plaques recognizing their achievements. Additional awards include:
  • Champion, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place Plaques
  • Der Panzer Ace: Most AFV Kills
  • Snake-Eyes: Most snake-eyes rolled
  • The Boxcar King: Most boxcars rolled
  • The Good Sportsman: Best non-winning participant
  • The Wheel of Death: Random prize draws each round
An Award Tracking Form will be provided to record and detail award points.

SWAG & Souvenirs:
  • Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of the Quick 6 VII scenario pack and be eligible for between-round prize draws.
  • Souvenir tournament t-shirts and coffee cups are available for purchase at C$25 each. Orders must be placed before 15 October 2024.
Tournament Schedule:

The tournament spans three days with the following schedule:
  • Round 1: Friday, 1800-2400 hrs (6 hours)
  • Round 2: Saturday, 0900-1600 hrs (7 hours)
  • Round 3: Saturday, 1700-2400 hrs (7 hours)
  • Round 4: Sunday, 0900-1500 hrs (6 hours)
Players are requested to be in the game room 15 minutes before the start of each round and to limit set-up times to 15-20 minutes per side to ensure maximum playing time.

Scenario List:

Players choose scenarios from the Scenario List of five scenarios per round. No exceptions are permitted, except under extenuating circumstances with the TD’s approval. Each player will secretly rank their top three selections as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. When revealing their choices to their opponent, scenario matches are determined by finding scenarios that both players selected. The scenario with the lowest Rank Average (RA) closest to the first choice will be the scenario to be played.

The scenario list will be released 1 July 2024.

Venue:

The tournament will be held at the Quay Inn, located on the north shore of the Fraser River in downtown New Westminster, British Columbia. Special room rates are available for attendees.

Registration:

The West Coast Rumble is part of the 2024 BottosCon Convention. Registration with the convention is required to participate in the ASL Tournament. There is a limit of 140 participants, and 50% of the spots have already been filled, so register soon to secure your place.

In addition, participants can compete for the coveted title of Der Panzer Ace. This prize is awarded to the player who destroys the most AFVs during the tournament. With an anticipated half of the 20 tournament scenarios containing a total of 46 AFVs, are you brave enough to take on these steel monsters and earn the title?

2024 West Coast Rumble (WCR) ASL Tournament Report.

The 2024 West Coast Rumble drew eight enthusiastic ASL players from Alberta, Washington State, Vancouver Island, and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia to the bustling BottosCon game convention in New Westminster, BC, from November 8 to 10. Held amidst the Pacific Northwest's signature rainy weather, the tournament was marked by camaraderie, intense play, and close matches, culminating in a climactic Sunday showdown.

This year’s WCR followed a four-round Swiss format with one round on Friday evening, two on Saturday, and a final round on Sunday morning. After four rounds of skillful strategy and tactical maneuvers, the final standings placed Terry Gray as the tournament champion with a score of 37 points. Following closely were Greg Barsness and Andrew Simpson, tied at 36 points, with Greg edging out Andrew in a head-to-head tiebreaker to claim second place.

Final Standings:
Terry Gray – Champion (37 points)
Greg Barsness – 2nd Place (36 points)*
Andrew Simpson – 3rd Place (36 points)*
Jim Rudek – 24 points
David Wolfe – 22 points
Steve Slunt – 21 points
Steve Buckley – 10 points
Andreas “Andy” Thaler – 0 points
*Head-to-head tiebreaker

Special Awards and Highlights
Panzer Ace: Steve Slunt, with an impressive 6 tank kills.
Most Snake-eyes: Terry Gray, with 14.
Most Boxcars: Jim Rudek, also with 14.
Highest ROF: Jim Rudek, who fired 9 consecutive shots with a Russian 57LL A-T Gun.
Good Sportsman: Andy Thaler, for his positive attitude and perseverance.

Wheel of Death Winners
Round 1: Greg Barsness, pair of dice courtesy of Battleschool.
Round 2: Steve Buckley, scenario pack from Kansas City ASL Group.
Round 3: Terry Gray, coffee cup from Lone Canuck Publishing.
Round 4: Andy Thaler, Action Pack #18 Road to Rangoon from MMP.

A Warm Welcome and Thanks
The WCR welcomed newcomer Andy Thaler, who made his debut after less than a year of ASL experience. Representing the Victoria ASL Group, Andy brought enthusiasm to every game, learning and growing with each match. Kudos to all his opponents, who generously shared their expertise with him—Andy’s sportsmanship earned him his well-deserved award.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the tournament sponsors—Lone Canuck Publishing, Battleschool, MMP, Kansas City ASL Group, Bounding Fire, Dispatches from the Bunker, and the Gamer’s Armory. Their generous contributions ensured that every winner was celebrated and rewarded for their achievements.

Special acknowledgment also goes to Rob Bottos and his diligent team for orchestrating another well-run BottosCon, overcoming the “herding cats” challenge of convention coordination with aplomb. The Inn at the Quay staff provided consistent support, keeping the venue clean and well-stocked, though a few hiccups with food service were noted. Morning breakfasts at nearby Angelinas Dutch Corner, offering a 10% discount to convention-goers, provided a warm start for players each day.

With the 2024 West Coast Rumble now in the books, the ASL community shifts its gaze south to the Northwest ASL Championship, set to take place at the Game-On Convention in Bellevue, Washington, from February 5 to 9, 2025. We look forward to another series of thrilling matches and memorable moments. Until then, roll low and rally well!
