Is 'Golden Compass' 'selling atheism to kids'?

That's a gross mischaracterization. Who's ever "squawked" about promoting Christianity to kids? It's a very common practice for children to attend church or sunday school. These institutions are hardly controversial. I'm not so afraid of opposing viewpoints that I will whine until...

Is 'Golden Compass' 'selling atheism to kids'?

Here's an article where Pulman, the writer of the books the movie is based on, attacks the movie for values he dislikes, among them religion. EDIT: But nevermind Narnia, it's terrible how pornographic it seems to be for a popular work of art to include atheistic ideas or for the author admit he...

Is 'Golden Compass' 'selling atheism to kids'?

As the article says, the movie and books are essentially the anti-Narnia, so even if it has atheistic themes (and it does, and that intrigues me), it's just as much "selling atheism" than Narnia was "selling Christianity".

Wii on sale everywhere here now

That's actually slightly true in some cases; there have been a few reports of Best Buy saving them for Sunday so they can advertise it in the circulars. Most of the time though, the consoles are sold whenever they come in.

I still haven't seen one "in the wild" yet.

Video Game Decency Act introduced in congress

Bills like this have already been struck down as unconstitutional in many states, so I doubt this'll go anywhere. And anyway, everything his bill is trying to accomplish is already accounted for by the ESRB. Developers aren't fined for hiding content, but often games are rerated by the board...

Is Wii for younger gamers only?

This is sort of a stigma attached to Nintendo itself, more than the Wii, and if anything the Wii has tried to distance itself from it. I understand where it comes from, and it's mostly because most of Nintendo's AAA games are on the whole, less "mature" than those on the 360 or PS3. Mario...

    My Sims for Wii

This looks...interesting. It's a weird Animal Crossing/Sims hybrid type of thing. I just hope it's different enough from Animal Crossing. link

    Consoles - I don't get it.

It seems draconian today, but it was a very important step back in 1985. In the early 80's there was a video game crash, and a large part of that was because of the flood of new companies making consoles and games. There were a lot of cheap startup companies that made a lot of bad games, and...

    Consoles - I don't get it.

It might be to cover the cost of the licensing fees to Microsoft for the Xbox (although I doubt they'd be $20) but more probably it's simply the fact that normally all 360 games debut at $60, and those buying the game probably won't question what is a uniform price. It could also be that...

    Manhunt 2 for Wii

It's also going to be on the PS2 and PSP, but Rockstar has a separate studio doing the Wii version specifically. And, this helps Nintendo shed a bit of the "kiddie" image, especially with Rockstar finally developing for a Nintendo platform. link

Should violent video games be banned?

Absolutely not. The industry is doing a fine enough job as it is self-regulating their sale to minors. It's difficult to go and buy GTA if you aren't 17 in most places. And anyway, the research "proving" the influence of violent games is erroneous at best. A lot of this political fuss over...

    WiiSports Workout Regimen

I was surprised that this actually worked. After playing WiiSports for 30 minutes a day for a month and a half, he lost 9 pounds. Link

PS3 Sells 1 million; Outselling Xbox 360 Launch

It's not entirely unusual for a company to take an initial loss and wait for the money to roll in eventually. It's called investing. It's the same reason you might get a cable modem for free when you sign up with a high speed internet service. Microsoft themselves lost 4 billion dollars on...

    Wii'ifying existing games

The Wiimote clearly can utilize 1:1 motion (it's obvious simply from playing golf or bowling) and that's how sword fighting will have to be implemented for it to be successful. DS: There's actually a Harry Potter title in development scheduled for release next year. Anyway, I don't have a...
