Hi all,
When a unit spends its (end of Movement) Search MF and is fired upon, what happens if it breaks or is pinned ?
Does the reference of the rule to a "Good Order" unit - and further mention of it not being pinned - cover that situation, that is, the search attempt is cancelled?
12.152 SEARCHING: As each Good Order Infantry/Cavalry MMC, or moving stack that contains ≥ one MMC, ends its move it may attempt to reveal concealed enemy units (/Minefields; 12.33) in Accessible hexes (including its own) by expending one additional MF in its present hex and making a Search dr, provided that all units making the attempt are neither Pinned nor using Assault Movement.

I have always played it that, per normal defensive fire principles, defensive fire takes place after the search has been carried out

To expand on Doug's answer a more detailed sequence would be.
Declare the search. Units must be GO, unpinned and not using AM at this moment.
Make the search dr.
Declare which hexes are being searched. All hexes must be declared before anything is revealed.
Reveal what is found.
Make and resolve casualty dr if needed.
Conduct DF.

One MF is expended in the hex as the searching unit(s) "end" their movement. At some point it becomes obvious a search is being conducted, even if the rules do not apparently require the announcement of a search. The searching units can be fired upon during this expenditure [unless it is claimed this is a combined movement with entering of the hex (unless already in the hex)]. Defensive fire vs. this MF is possible, no? And if thereby pinned or broken or goes berserk there is no search dr.

Otherwise why the proviso of not being pinned?

Or am I missing something?

The Move initiates the shot.
ONLY DC placement AFAIK requires post shot conditions to be met.
