Played The Playing Field
7501

against John Haughey. He had the Soviets. Lots of elite guys.

7503

The 120 mm OBA and the FT he had scared me, so I had nothing but dummies in the S38 factory, and did kind of a reverse slope defense in the O36 (Projectile Vomiting) factory. I was limited as to how many squads I could set up in each factory, but nothing says I can't move them in. I had two squads on my left to cover some open ground and protect a mortar

7504

and one squad on my right. All Fortified Locations were in the O36 factory.

I used my card palming skills to ensure that the first card John drew for his OBA was red. These skills are why I am banned from several area casinos. That, and I was patting women's bottoms. And men's.

John gave all of the DCs to crews. He had one stack that decided to become Sewer Sniffers.

7506

Everyone else crept forward, and by turn 2 he had cleared the (empty) S38 factory, run into both minefields, and tried to place a DC. His crew was gunned down in proper war-movie fashion, leaving the blood-soaked DC behind.

John had better luck with his 2nd OBA draw, and broke one mortar crew. His infantry broke one of my left flank squads. A DC was successfully placed on one of my stacks, but they were all dummies, and the roll was an 11, so it didn't even make them disappear.

One of my squads in the factory broke when I boldly charged forward to force a broken 458 to rout out of the minefield. Since that didn't work, my 6+1 said, "Let me show you where the Iron Crosses grow!", and also charged, passing a 1MC on the way, and forcing the 458 out. The 458 did get reduced leaving the minefield, so it was a happy ending.

The Sewer Stinkers tried to come up out of the sewer into an empty factory hex, but Boris got scared when he saw one of those giant sewer alligators that Stalingrad is known for, so they wouldn't advance out. This really screwed things up. Even though John would have liked to come up in that location the next turn, by sewer rules he has to move. Also, all units must go together - you can't send one squad one direction and another squad a different direction. "Okay, men, as long as we are in the sewer, I want all of you to hold hands!!!"

This is the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Soviet army.

Or, in this case, possibly "Don't Ask, Don't Smell."

The flamethrower squad

7507

had to enter the factory through a minefield. He passed the minefield attack, but not the 16 FP shot.

John was able to pick up the dropped DC, but another K result eliminated both the crew and it.

John draws another red card, and his 120mm OBA is no more. I believe that there were complications with the radio transmissions to the artillery battery:
7508
"A big 'Howdy' to all of you boys and girls out there in Trenchland!!! This is Yuri "The Fury" on WSTA, and I'll be playing those tunes that will make you want to leave your bunker and dance in the street!!! I'm here until 2 AM, so let's keep those requests coming!!!"

The troops from the 83rd Fecal Battalion move to another factory location, but this one has Germans in it. To make it worse, I had a HIP 548 in the hex also. Norton and company gack their roll and get discovered, and I have a 36 -2 attack. I roll a 10 and cower, but it still pins the 9-1 and breaks the two 628s, who are then eliminated.

Had they passed, they would not have been able to enter my location anyway, as it was one of my Fortified locations. We had blocked off the sewer entrance with a big box of old CH modules. As far as I can tell, it's not like the entrance is sealed, so I could still shoot into the sewer.

John conceded. He had lost 9 CVPs, had 6 broken units, including the FT squad and the one remaining DC crew, and still didn't have a foothold in the factory. My only loss was a HS on a Fate roll. Loss of OBA and the fact that John's favorite number was 10 did not help the war effort.

Please note - the SSR sentence about placing a Flame should be deleted.

Rules weirdness - as far as we could determine, dudes carrying FTs get the additional -1 when attacked by a minefield.

More rules weirdness - not that this happened in our game, but if you exit a sewer into a location with Wire, are you placed beneath the Wire counter? I would think so, but it doesn't say.

I believe you would be placed on top of the wire as per normal entrance of the location, even with a tunnel. This is similar to exiting a pillbox, where the unit is also placed on top of the wire.

I might have stood a better chance if I had read the VC beforehand. However, I like to play ASL “single blind,” where only my opponent understands the victory conditions.
If you kill all your opponent's units, you probably have achieved the VC somewhere along the way. It's just common sense. And it's The Berserker Way.

Or better phrased as.....VPs do not pay attention to detail.

Ditto. It's great seeing Vince's AAR's and great that he has dropped his HIP status as of late.

"John draws another red card, and his 120mm OBA is no more. I believe that there were complications with the radio transmissions to the artillery battery: " We usually cite "Tarzan Triumphs" where Cheetah steals a key part from the Nazi's radio.

Played this last night and lost as the Reds. My OBA was devastating mid-game but I lost momentum after it lifted. I liked this and would try it again. However, no OBA = no chance for the Russians.
