That was purely for the raiding sorties... not at all historical as you say. I don't know that it was much use... it just limited the BCs range. I have since done a game with just the BCs in pairs and that was... fun... Though once the GF finds you there's an awful lot of running away to do.
I should resurrect this campaign and carry on, but I got a bit bored sailing around in circles in the far north as Hipper. He should be recalled I think in any case and Sheer's plan to destroy the Dover Monitors put in motion.
It's apparent that with the poor ammunition off and so many 15" gunned ships in the battle the RN is a deadly force if it can concentrate. I noticed most of the damage done to I.SG was by 15" shells which presumably was all Repulse and Renown's work.
Agreed. Apart from some connection problems that eventually forced one player to quit the game the battle was very enjoyable. I was in command of 5th Battle Squadron RN (less Queen Elizabeth which by late 1917 was fleet flagship) and had an escort of a squadron of 4 light cruisers and a weak...
Escorting merchants should be hard because it wasn't done in 1916 so by trying to do it, effectively we're cheating. I don't mind the way the merchants are run and it is fun trying to see if you can escort them but I hardly think it is realistic.
Yes, this was two or three separate battles going back to the strategic map each time and when that happens you can't escort a merchant. The game dumps the escorts back in the TF they are with and since I'd chased those two destroyers up north almost as far as Whitby when III.SG was put back on...

Hipper continued his long range sweep of the seas north of Scotland; Derfflinger, Seydlitz and 3.II Half-Flotilla working to the north-west, west of the Outer Hebrides and II.SG working in pairs north of the Shetlands, patrolling back and forth in the freezing wastes.
In the south...
