Which is why the frontal assaults by the lead elements of the 9th Fallschirmjager Regiment, which went on for most of the day, were cut to pieces. It wasn't until a few of the more veteran NCOs took matters into their own hands and led a flanking maneuver which came up on the isolated platoon through the woods to the rear. It was a standard tactic that should have been attempted within the first ten minutes, but the inexperienced Helmut von Hofmann, the regimental commander, was not up to the task.Looking at the map provided by Wayne, to recreate an actual attack SSR, the Germans would have to first make 2 frontal attacks on a slope with 4.5 hexes (200yds) OG with a barbed-wire fence (P3) in the center. This against the 30cal in the foxhole plus the 50cal on one of the Jeeps.
All that to say, I would be curious if the scenario mentioned by Wayne provided the attacking Germans with such a flanking the opportunity. If so, the issue should reach a rapid conclusion, IMO.
