How about a board # 0 (yes, zero)? This board has no terrain features other than the requisite connecting woods, plus some/all/none of the connecting roads. (Do any/all geo boards really need to show connecting roads, or even short, one-hex road endings?) Otherwise, board 0 is an open ground board. Suitable for adding whatever overlays might work; or not adding any! Board # 00 would be the same but for DASL.

It is a fairly simple idea, no?

CH did a "Lords of the Steppes" system which was based on this concept. Maps were a cool idea. Scenarios were spotty at best. Typical CH. Good idea, shitty execution. -- jim

Actually, my 'very first scenario design' used Board 0.

It featured two lieutenants that, after a taunt by one of the other, met at dawn with their secundants on some piece of blasted heath to duel each other. One of them was dishonorable and his secundant Halfsquad tried to take things in hand for him. Which, of course, took the secundant HS of the other into action. The scenario ended with the death of either of the two lieutenants the winner being the side with the survivor.

It was 'published' exclusively here on Gamesquad in one of my posts. Unfortunately, I did not manage to dig it up after trying for a quarter of an hour...

Rumor has it, that this scenario is a hidden gem. Well, maybe just a tad more hidden than a gem... ?

VASL has it.

That is the board. The road net is not necessary. Now if this board could be printed up like the others so that scenario designers take it as seriously available (for ftf, etc.) ... probably needs at the same time a few overlays specially shaped to cover over some/many of the single hex border woods, replacing them with variations of open ground, brush, grain, pond, hills, gullies and the like.

Well, they can steal good ideas, they can't steal diligence or commitment.

What you could do is to adjust this board in VASL not to show the roads and then print it on 160g paper (comparable to that of a scenario card).

This is what I usually do when playing any scenario that has terrain alterations, like PTO, Snow, Overlays, etc.
