Part 1

Shortly after the beginning, K-479, a Charlie II class SSGN, gets first contacts on a group of ships. Since many contacts are detected, this could be the convoy. Looks like I´m lucky and have not to search the whole North Atlantic for the convoy. Launched a Bear and three Backfires. The Bear approaches the convoy from the West, the Backfires from the East.

Get the Backfires in missile range and launch all missiles. No hit, this convoy must have strong AAW vessels and maybe fighters, too. The Bear has to run away, hostile aircraft approaching.

So the opening stage is over. This convoy will be a tough nut.Would love to have fighters, supported by tankers.

Part 2

The second wave of Backfires, three again, sinks one cargo ship. Although the Bear-D is active and rather close, it is extremely difficult to get good contacts - jamming.

Part 3

Ooops! Cannot reload the Backfires with long range ASM, only bombs are available. That makes it much harder. There will be no win without successfull sub attacks, that´s for sure. So far, no own losses. have placed the Bear South of the convoy, no one attacks it. Very good.

Afraid to get your hands dirty? ;)
First attack with my Charlie II SSGN. One missile. It definitely hits a tanker, but there are more ships gone, it seems. Oh, I used a nuke... well, it wasn´t forbidden, was it?

Few seconds later...You have successfully completed your victory conditions!

Just a look in the BDA..oh, yes..23 ships sunk. That WAS a nuke.

Going to play on from my last save before I launched the nuke. Try to achieve a fair win.

The orders did not restrict you from employment of Special Weapons. Congratulations. You've crossed the nuclear threshold! :D

Well, so this U-Boat commander ignited a nuclear World War, it seems. :smoke:

Just restarted the other timeline where I don´t use nukes.

Placed the Bear and three Backfires South of the convoy. Contacts not good enough for firing. Meanwhile my Charlie II SSGN is under torpedo attack. It gave away its position when it launched one missile in an vain BOL attack.

Lost the Charlie II SSGN due to a 52 knot torpedo. Got in position another Beard-D though, this one North of the convoy. Now I get much better contacts. A Rorsat passed by and made the picture even more clear. sadly, now ASM-armed backfires currently available, no sub close enough.

Vectoring in two SSN. One convoy escort, a Spanish frigate, sunk on their way towards the merchants.

The K-488, a Victor II SSN, already got three merchants. Those terrible Type 65 killer warheads only need one hit.

That K-488 commander will become Hero of the Soviet Union, if he survives: six merchants sunk, he´s amidst the convoy. Sadly, the sister SSN, the K-438, was sunk without scoring one hit.

Nine merchants and escort vessels sunk. A real turkey shoot in the inner circle. Where are the ASW escorts, the helos?

Finally, the brave K-488 is sunk. Thus the Hero of the Soviet Union will be Post Mortem. Anyway, this sub driver has ripped the whole convoy and the stage is set for the next assault by three more subs moving in the theatre.

The K-513, another Victor II SSN, moves into the formation and the massacre continues. No real ASW activities. The sub´s torpedoes sink ship after ship. And then...victory is ours! This time without any nukes. I wonder if the H3 version will be harder, that convoy did not defend itself very well.

Wonderful AAR. Thanks for taking the time to share it.

I think that the scenario will be more difficult under the H3 game engine because of the bugs and problems found in ANW or HUE such as:

1. Subs that are quiet and stealthy in ANW will usually not be attacked by the AI because it cannot identify them. Often, they can creep into a formation (with an AI helo sitting right over them) and then open fire because the helo will not attack! Once the attack is detected the helo will usually drop torpedoes.

2. The game sometimes has great difficulty in locating targets by sonar. In ANW, the subs detect targets within Uncertainty Zones MUCH larger than those found in H3. The AI has more difficulty localizing the targets and closing on them, IMO.

I love this Kind of Scenario: to coordinate SNA and sub attacks on Nato convoys and/or carrier groups. Which other Scenarios dealing with These OOB can you recommend?

Try:

1.0 Atlantic Convoys [RUS] Easy 21st Century Ocean Wars\Atl_R1_0.SCN
1.1 Atlantic Convoys [RUS] Hard 21st Century Ocean Wars\Atl_R1_1.SCN
4.1 Strike Warfare [RUS] 21st Century Ocean Wars\BarentzR.scn
8.0 Pacific Recon 21st Century Ocean Wars\PacRecon.SCN
9.0 Pacific 21st Century Ocean Wars\Pacific.SCN

It would be great to hear how you fare with these. IIRC, Freek only tested them for H3 and will probably function best under that version.
