B29 states that roadblocks set up in a location with the arrow pointing at the blocked hex side. For the purpose of losing HIP, must an enemy unit see the location (of the counter, essentially), or must an enemy unit see the hex side?

I am aware that the roadblock will be revealed if it, or its extensions, block LOS of an enemy unit, but that is not relevant to this question.

TIA

I have always seen it played that you just need to see the hexside (or any part of it) including the part extending into the blocking terrain in the hexes on the sides of the road (building, woods, etc)

B29.2 Except as stated otherwise, a roadblock is treated as a stone wall across the hexside to which it points. In addition, the roadblock extends straight along that hexside to the center dot of any Accessible woods/building Location that includes a roadblock-hexside vertex (see the 29.4 example). The roadblock hexside (and any extension) is a Half-Level Obstacle to LOS.

The counter just has to go somewhere to point at the hexside (and it could be on either side of the roadblock)

Of course VASL handles it nicer with the draggable overlays

I suppose you could simulate that by having the carboard counter balanced on edge along the hexside

Here are two unofficial Q&A on the subject:

B29.2 & P5.141 Is LOS to a roadblock hexside hindered by Hindrances in the adjacent road hex for HIP-loss purposes? Must LOS to a roadblock
extension be considered in determining HIP-loss, and, if so, where along the extension may LOS be drawn? In determining whether a Narrow Street
roadblock (P5.141) loses HIP, must LOS be considered to every point on the line between the center dots of the two hexes?
A. Yes. No. No – the LOS must be drawn to both vertices of the hexspine straddled. [Letter8]

B29.2 For purposes of revealing a HIP roadblock, is LOS to a roadblock traced to the hex center dot of the hex containing the roadblock counter, or is
it traced to the roadblock hexside (including any extension to the center dots of adjacent building/-woods hexes)?
A. LOS to, and thus HIP loss of, a roadblock is dependent upon LOS to the hex the roadblock is in. However, if the roadblock (only) blocks LOS
of a Good Order enemy unit to any Location, then the existence of the roadblock hexside must be disclosed (although not necessarily the hex it is
in). In practice, it is easier to place the roadblock on board once a qualifying LOS has been blocked. [Compil7]
