I have been reading this site for a few days now and have never played any of these games. I have Panzer General II and have never played it. Just dug it out of the attic this morning and installed it. I have never played any of these types of games. Would TOAW be to difficult for someone who has never played any of these types? I am dying to play it after listening to all you on here. It seems that it is a fairly old game, any idea where to pick it up pretty cheap? Thank you for your time.

Jason

P.S.
Will my wife divorce me once I get my hands on this game?

Welcome to the addiction. I think Take2 in the US is where you get the drug - I did, ca 40 USD, and this site should indeed point you to the proper dealer (does it - no?)! :surprise:

Shout when you need an opponent!

(Hrmr old game well, as we say: old is oldest!) ;)

TOAW is pretty simple to learn, even if you dont have a lot of wargaming backround, but to get good at it you need to learn how the game works. Best way to do that is to play :)

Download the demo!

http://www.warfarehq.com/toaw/TOAW_CW_demo_1_06.zip

You might have luck finding a copy in the bargin bin of your local games store, othewise copies show up on ebay now and then and I think take2 still sells it via their offical store.

But with the wealth of quality user made scenarios that keep comming out and the ability to find a willing play-by-email opponent, its a great value for the money.

I only wish the 1.07 patch would see the light of day.

Thanks guys..........I think I am going to give it a try. I don't quite understand how you all go about playing each other, but in due time I am sure it will be made clear.

Remember, no mtter what game you play...its all about combined arms, combined arms, combined arms.
Don't have any romantic notions about armor being the invincible beast but stack it with infantry backed by artillery and air support and....oh mama!!

Well the full blown version arrived last week. After reading a few pages in the manual this is nothing like I have ever played. After reading on here and in the manual, some of these games are supposed to last 52 turns. So who sets these numbers and what happens if it lasts longer? Shorter? I was kind of looking at the Korea War scenario, how long does it take for a typical turn? I have read on here it can take upwards of 6 hours? Is that 6 hours for you to go through your complete "force/molitary" and decide on what your going to do and how your going to attack?

Hey,

the average turn for a small scenario, unit size that is, is about 30-45 minutes, (i.e. Arracourt, crete 41).

It depends on how many units you have, not just how many turns.

Wintergewitter is a six hour turn for me, including everything except viewing the ooponents moves. Depends on amount of units and how well you use the Tactical Combat turns, and if ya don't get unlucky with your turn ending quickly.

You'll see, the learning curve is pretty high once ya get started.

Yes, it really is one of a kind, and the very best operational level, computer wargame ever produced.

Don't let that scare you. Some scenarios are even 500 turns long. :surprise:

The designer of the scenario sets the nominal turn limit for the game. Sometimes, (very rarely) they will end a turn early. Fairly regularly, they will go a turn or two longer than the nominal. The farthest past the nominal that I've seen a game go is 6 turns, in a tough-fought battle of Kharkov '42 against my old buddy Fistandantilus. Pretty dramatic for a scenario that is nominally 14 turns long, and your rival was trashing you all along.

I was kind of looking at the Korea War scenario, how long does it take for a typical turn?
Korea '50-'51 is nominally 26 turns, though if you activate the Chinese, the game will go for a nominal length of 52 turns. Each turn should go fairly quickly. For me, they run about 30-60 minutes long, depending on how many rounds I'm trying to pull off, or how deeply my chestnuts are in the fire.

I have read on here it can take upwards of 6 hours? Is that 6 hours for you to go through your complete "force/molitary" and decide on what your going to do and how your going to attack?
I've had some game turns take well over 24 hours of game time to execute. Namely early turns of DnO, by Daniel McBride, when I'm playing the Axis. Don't let the thought of such monsters scare you off, though. There are plenty of smaller scenarios that you can knock off a turn in 10 or 15 minutes on. Try Arracourt '44 for starters, playing as the US.

Finally, welcome as a game-carrying member of the club! Enjoy and never feel afraid to ask questions. We've all be on the low spot of the curve before. Also, check out some of the articles here on this site, for hints and tips. Especially Bob Cross' excellent article on multiple combat rounds.
