View Full Version : What's different from Combat Leader compared to Steel Panthers?

I'll let the Matrix development team answer that one.
Jacko -- I consider Steel Panthers (on which Combat Leader is based)
Marc Schwanebeck -- Sorry, but CL is a new baby. All in common with SP is that it´s also "turnbased", hexbased and WW2.
Then how is CL editor a step up from spwaw's editor???
Marc Schwanebeck -- You´ll see.
The editor is not capable of the Kremlin, because the graphics are not there. If the graphics would be there, you could do the Kremlin of course.
Grenadier -- There will be so much you will be able to do with the CL map editor. AS a very conservative estimate I would say the CL map graphics are about 4 times the number as SPWaW. The trees alone are as much as the entire SPWaW graphics put together. The building files are immense and with a little imagination a good representation of the Kremlin can be done, Don. There are enough onion dome graphics to make a babushka homesick.
Sounds terrific. But will my computer be able to handle it?
Here's the specs for it, Headshot;
System Specifications:
Windows 95 / 98 /Me / 2000 /XP
Pentium 300 MHZ (or faster)
64 MB of RAM Recommend 128 MB
32 MB 3D graphics card.
Soundcard (DirectX 8.0 compatible)
150 MB of free hard drive space
DirectX 8.1
8x CD-Rom

Most people's computers should be able to handle that.
yeah maybe my ancient other computer can handle that too, thats great.
Anyone that thinks anything nice about Steel Panthers will haaaaaaave to get a shot at Combat Leader.
I can't picture anyone liking Steel Panthers, and not wanting Combat Leader.
It would be like saying they thought Squad Leader was a better game than ASL.
Sure SL is ok in its own way, but ASL is way more cool.
CL will also be way more cool.
The only thing I didn't like or understand about the ngoing CL development is the need for a 32 meg video card.
But I suppose I had to get the upgrade anyways, so my son could progress in games and my wife could dabble in newer games.
I am not sure I would have upgraded just for one game even one as great as I hope CL will be.
I am not overly into purchasing game after game after game.
That and I am running out of gift ideas for the future heheh.
I am looking forward to a few years of nifty CL extensions to give me a reason to care about computer games.
Without CL I might have just decided to return to board gaming.
This is going to be a loooooong winter waiting for that game to be released :(
Do you know if CL wil be able to run with the "fake" Intel chipset?
What on earth is a "fake intel chip set"?
It is the Intel exscuse for a video card. It steals processing power to emulate a video card.
Ahhhh, well hmmm what I know about video cards won't take me far hehe.
I do know that the game will likely require modest video power potential, but then that is a fairly general statement I suppose.
I hope it won't be say equal to Battlefield 1942, which will tell you computer sucks if it isn't fairly recent and fairly powerful (that's not a slag against BF42, I like the design enough to play it, it just doesn't like to run on anything but a "capable" computer).
My current worry is my sound card is lunch bag let down. I hope I don't have to put cash into that as well to play new software.
I am sooo looking forward to playing Combat Leader.
But following Combat Leader, my patience with constant computer upgrading to play yet another computer game, that could have been made just as nice, but without some of the flash, will likely be exhausted.
I have already become something of a spectacular nuisance back home with my attitudes towards "flashy".
So hopefully my tin foil "video card" will support CL. If not, A&A and SPWAW will have to do it
Well A&A when played vs humans is an ok game in my opinion.
And life confined to Steel Panthers is hardly what I call torture hehe.
I am in the middle of a glorious free for all battle in my Lost Victories Mega Campaign - Nasty Surprise. Pz IIIs and Pz IVs slugging it out with KVs and hordes of Russian junk armour. Artillery dropping everywhere, theirs, mine. Grabbing VHs in the rear suddenly with no opposition, worried about the 3 KVs that got past my armour on the left flank (cause I left all my trucks back there). My routing their center as they trash my center.
SPWaW likes XP just fine, although without CL, I guess I would be fated to not see much decent programming for modern - ever.
SP non WaW has a nice following, but it seems it is easier to run it in 98 (and I don't like 98 at all).

Does anyone have any updates on Combat Leader's status? The Matrix forum has been awfully quiet the last couple of months and I would like to take that as a good sign (meaning they are working hard and don't have time to post). :D

Well remeber this thing was sheduled to be released in spring 2002 at first.
I'm sure it will be a great game,I only hope that development will continue well beyond WW2.
WW2 all the time gets tiresome. Way to many WW2 games.

WW2 all the time gets tiresome. Way to may WW2 games. :eek:Agreed. Which is why I am eagerly awaiting the Windows version of SPMBT from the CAMO guys.
