Its been 4 months since Norm posted on usenet (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=lajt8017h7k3bsjd3ph82lqcm8ckjusv40%404ax.com) about working on a 1.07 patch that fixed the bugs in 1.06, anybody have even the slightest tease of information if this is ever going to see the light of day?

I guess it simply means it is not going to happen then.

The fact is that the people who hold the rights to TOAW are not interested in paying Norm to produce a patch for it.
I believe at one point Norm produced a screenshot of some prototype TOAW update involving things like hexside rivers. However it is ridiculous to expect him to invest the time and effort of debugging and playtesting such a patch when he could be getting paid for working on some other game (such as his Russo-Japanese war project).

:laugh:Well, better late than never. With this kind of timing, 1.07 patch will be out when I retire :whist:
On the bright side of things, I'll have plenty of time to play then.

I doubt we'll see any meaningful development of TOAW. It is now seven years since it was originally released- one third of my lifetime. For a time we will keep on making high quality scenarios for the same engine and eventually someone will come up with a game that does the same thing only better.
A better version of Century of Warfare, Ben? Don't think we'll see that in a while unfortunately.

An open source operational-level wargame. Something along the lines of what Larry Fulkerson is doing. Made, very likely, by someone who is just passionate about wargaming rather than by one of the big companies.
Otherwise, right now the people playing TOAW are still mostly people who picked it up when it was new. Even the people who are new to the community seem to be people who played it five years ago and are coming back. I can't imagine that in ten years time someone is going to pick up a game as old as TOAW and consider it to be the state of the art in the field. People do play games which are that old, but purely for nostalgia value. Imagine if people were still getting excited about the idea of a new patch for the original Quake.

If so, old or not, TOAW (and hopefully its open-source improvement) would still be state of the art in their field, albeit for want of newer designs.
But I guess that there will be a host of OS-related issues by then...

My point is that at the moment most wargamers already own TOAW, and even if they don't, the idea of paying Talonsoft $40 for a copy doesn't seem too outrageous. This works for a game that's seven years old. If it were twenty years old people would just laugh- and they'd start looking for a new game to do the same thing. Then the market might be big enough. Also development costs for such a game might have dropped given the increase in computer power and computer literacy.
But I guess that there will be a host of OS-related issues by then...
Up to a point. Assuming that backwards compatability will be a problem for a lot of games, there will be emulators for the old systems. Certainly there are now DOS emulators available.
