Some of you may like this, so I'll repost here this thread of pictures I took earlier today.

Grey Seas, Grey Skies... The USS HORNE, appears out of the murk...

The aged cruiser contrasts greatly with the brightly colored pleasure craft....

Nobody has a moment to glance at the old girl...

The salvage tug NAVAJO tows her to her final resting place; to be sunk as a target near Hawaii.

A technological marvel of 1967 is now stripped down to the bare essentials:

The forward missle launcher, and illuminators. The "E"s record her record of excellence.

Last passage through the Golden Gate, a journey she first made when brand new out of the yard at Hunter's Point.

An angry sun watches her depart...

Farewell, and thanks for your thirty years of service to your country...

Man, am I glad that the one ship I have the most emotional ties to, the "Mölders", is the one German DDG to have been saved as a museum ship!

(It was near heartbreaking to see "Lütjens" prepared for target practice, even though I never sailed on her, and I'm glad "Bayern" and "Sachsen" still have many years of active service, so for me "Köln" is the next to fear for.)

I'm glad my old ship wasn't used as a target. While making for cool video and providing important data, it always seems to me like a betrayal. Work hard and take risks for the common good your whole life, only to be shot in the back by your friends and left in an unmarked grave. So in a way, I take some comfort from the fact that my old ship's living on somehow, probably scattered all over the world as I-beams and rebar.
