Okay, I have developed a new set of icons and now I need to apply the icons to every colorset. Whats the fastest and easiest way to do this?

I used the simple “Paint” program which comes with most MS systems to copy and paste icons. Works easiest if you zoom the icons 400% or more, both large and small icon sets. Don't copy the entire icon, just copying and pasting the symbol will suffice. I assume you will be copying from a master file to the individual unit icons.

As for the small icon sets, the icons from the large set can be pasted onto the small icons and adjusted as required.

I expect that you have already done the calculation, but if you intend to do every color set, you have a big job to complete. There are 110 large icon color sets, 110 small icon color sets and 128 icons per set. Potentially there are 28160 individual icons for you to touch.

You will also need to use the BioEditor to create a new execution file which recognizes the new icon sets. You do intend to rename your icon sets and not just write over the existing graphic files, right?

Just for grins, attached is a bmp file I was working on (based on work and information provided by Pavel) for a new Soviet unit icon set. I also have an icon set for circa 1940 Germany.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I only modified a handful of icons - around 10. I guess I was approaching it the wrong way. I was trying to subsitute colors on each of the files but that was taking too long and the borders tend to get discolored. I didn't think about transplanted icons onto the already existing ones. I have been using Bioed to work on the modified flags and icons. Hopefully have a beta up soon. Thanks again.

Very nice icon set - sharp and crisp. My poor icons are amateur at best. LOL.

What type of scenario do you have in mind? This sounds interesting!!

This crew needs to get off the WW II mind set and move on to the bigger world.

Is there a thread about using the BioEditor? I've seen it used in a couple of games and would like to find out more...

Thanks

If you go over to tdg forum and makes a search for bioeditor/biohazard you´ll find lots of info.

Well, the one I am working on is sci-fi based on the Battletech universe. Combat in the 31st Century. Quite conventional but with huge tanks, hover vehicles and battlemechs (sort of like massive walking tanks). I have finished up the Bioed editor, custom flags, and custom icons. I have completed the OOB and a majority of the map for the first scenario. It needs a lot of testing as I don't know how all this equipment is going to work out. Some of the battlemechs have the firepower of a small destroyer. Scenarios are not going to be the frontline battles you are used to. Scenarios cover campaigns on an entire planet or continent with a handful of regiments on both sides. The campaign I am working on now involves about eight regiments landing on a planet in attempt to capture an old depot that is filled with spare parts. It has some twists and turns that happen in the scenario that I don't want to give away now. Since the units are dropped on the planet from orbit, I'm trying to work a way that the player can choose where we wants to drop his assault and defending forces. Should make for some nice maneuver fighting. The Battletech universe is very rich in history, factions, and fighting units. Do a search online for Battletech and you will find some interesting sites.

Well, the one I am working on is sci-fi based on the Battletech universe. Combat in the 31st Century . . . The campaign I am working on now involves about eight regiments landing on a planet in attempt to capture an old depot that is filled with spare parts.

Battletech . . . never heard of it but it does sound promising. I have always thought that a good scenario is one that engages the player(s) to maneuver and plan strategically prior to the attack. The time frame or era of the battle is of little meaning so long as a challenging puzzle is provided. Using only a small number of units requires the player(s) to plan and defend against both frontal and flank attacks. Hope your maps are large enough to accommodate such tactics.

There are a few scenarios available which are able to provide the strategic challenge while also remaining true to the historical fact, however, the majority seem to fall prey to the historical “fidelity” theme and produce nothing more than a hexagon scrum. Really get tired of scenarios where the armies start off lined up nose to nose and map edge to map edge. . . not much chance there to forge new strategies in attack and defense. Its refreshing to see an alternative point of view.

Another good point is that you evidently plan to make a series of scenarios. Nice! Come up with three or four good ones and you can have a dedicated Battletech tournament!

I am not one for lengthy scenarios, but if you keep them under 20 turns I would be happy to participate in the testing process.

I used to play Battletech against my brother in junior high. Haven't played it much since then (15 years or so) but I'm looking forward to this. Wasn't there a BT operational level wargame once? Battlespace, I think it was called?

Edit: Ah crap. Didn't realize this was nearly a year old. My bad. Trey - did you ever release this?

LOL. I need to dust it off and complete it. I completed a custom unit list, map, units, etc. I just needed to place the units and get it setup to test out unit values, etc. With the all the new matrix announcements, my interest has picked up again and I'm getting back into the design again.

Trey:

Please be sure to announce completion, eh? There's prlly more peeps interested in this than know about your intent...

I for one, would like to see more designers work out with new unit icons.
