As this is the only forum I am writing on, where there are both Russian and Canadian members, let me just say that it was a great game, truly engrossing, and that Russia has shown a true spirit, despite seemingly lost game. Congratulations!

PS. If someone hasn't got a clue what I'm writing about - it's Ice Hockey World Championships final, which has just ended, 5:4 to Russia, sudden death.

That was a great game to watch, even though my team lost.

Kovalchuk has the most wicked wrist shot I have ever seen. :hail:

Great game, Russia. Congratulations on your championship. I missed it, but managed to catch up on the highlights online. No, instead of catching a great game like that, I watched the Pinguins dismantle the Flyers yesterday. I wish I had watched the Hockey World Championship instead!!

And congratulations to Pittsburgh on their next Stanley Cup, I don't see the western teams stopping this years team. :(

Even though I live where snow is something that happens once or twice in a lifetime, I'm still a rabid hockey fan. It's my favorite sport, because it combines the up-and-down-the-court speed of basketball, the low-scoring intensity of baseball, and the violence of mixed martial arts. Besides, where else can I watch a bunch of people beat each other to death with sticks while I drink beer? :D

Congrats to the Russian team. That was a good game.

My main disappointment in hockey this season is that Detroit just knocked my "home" team Dallas out of the Stanley Cup playoffs. But I'm looking forward to a good cup series. I figure Detroit will beat Pittsburg, but you never know...

Ever since I have played EA Sports NHL 94, Detroit Red Wings is my favourite team. The last installment I have bought is NHL 07; surely the last one with Steve Yzerman.

Sadly, in Poland NHL is almost nonexistant in TV.

As a NYR fan, NHL94 was my favorite. :smoke: I am NOT a Red Wings fan, but they have my total respect. Yzerman has been an ironman for Detroit.

Sadly, it is also almost nonexistant on US TV as well, especially after the strike. You can occasionally get a game on cable or satellite, but to keep up with what is going on you have to buy pay per view. Wisely, this season, the NHL is allowing the Stanley Cup playoffs to be shown on Versus TV channel, which is seen by a fairly wide audience, and I have been able to see quite a few good hockey games over the past few weeks without paying extra money to see them.

LOL, BH, I should have guessed you were another southern hockey fan. When I was a kid, the NHL was on TV more than it is now and after watching enough to understand the rules, I became a lifelong fan. I love to watch football, and basketball, (maybe some car racing :p ) but I agree, I'd just as soon watch a good hockey game. ;)

I've got DirectTV and it shows a LOT of hockey on the Versus network. Plus, I get some of the Fox Sports channels that show the hockey games of their local areas. So I was able to see a lot of hockey this season.

That "strike" (actually a lock-out by ownership IIRC) was the dumbest thing I've seen in sports in my lifetime (besides the BCS not have a playoff). At that time, hockey was riding a surge of popularity nation-wide. During it, everybody went back to their old favorites. After it, nobody's come back, and hockey's no longer on the regular networks....

I think Detroit's going to win the Stanley Cup in a 4-game sweep. I don't think Pittsburgh has much hope of scoring a goal, let alone winning a game.

Detroit this year is one of the best, if not the best, hockey team I've ever watched. It's like their guys can see the future. No matter where the puck goes, one of them is always there to scoop it up. No matter where the other team's guys go, there are always more Detroit guys at the critical places. All of Detroit's passes are right on target, even when thrown blind, because they just know where each other will be without having to look. And they're always attacking, always moving faster, than the other team.

After a couple of bad games in the 1st round, Detroit has really become godlike and shows no sign of letting off. Colorado in the 2nd round was no contest for them at all. Dallas put up a better fight and even won 2 games (although more to luck than skill IMHO), but that series was never really in doubt, either. Now Pittsburgh looks certain to go the same way as Colorado.

In fact, I think Pittsburgh is getting blown out even worse than Colorado was. I don't think either game has really been as close as the consecutive 3-0 scores would indicated :). Colorado could at least score on Detroit sometimes and was always trying. Pittsburgh, OTOH, has been shell-shocked since the 1st period of the 1st game, and can't do anything.

So, if you want to see what hockey perfection looks like, the Stanley Cup finals this season are the thing to see. But if you want to see competitive hockey, you need to wait until next season.

Oops :)

Looked to me like Detroit forgot to listen to the slave whispering in the ear, "Remember, you are mortal." They got behind thinking they could do no wrong and had that bite them in the butt. By the time they realized they were in a real fight, Pittsburgh was fired up and refused to let them catch up. Quite. Had the game been another 5 minutes longer, maybe they would have.

OK, Detroit in 5, even though I HATE those bastids :)

The way Pittsburgh went through the East, I thought they would take Detroit, but the Red Wings have played very well. I think they will close it out tonight. I respect Detroit, but I'm REAL REAL tired of them.

Ditto. As a Dallas fan, I HATE Detroit. But you have to admire them. I don't think I've seen a better team than what they've got this year.
