Odies (Russ) v POS =Draw
Much of the action centred on the big T-34/85's v Panthers tank battle for the coastal village (see earlier stunning screenshots), while elsewhere Odies Russian infantry infiltrated much of the map..

Odies single Russian squad near house keeps the marshes flag neutral in the face of German numerical superiority..

After being shooed away by my schreck guy after an earlier attack on the 3 Hetzers behind the house, Mangus's T-34/85 suddenly comes back for a second stab backed up by his mech infantry comrades and brews a Hetzer, taunting them with the cry- "daddy's home!" while the Hetzers are distracted firing at targets offmap to the right..

That was one heck of a challenging game POS. You are correct, the academy was the key terrain in our fight. That, and a good bit of luck, killing 5 tanks in one turn is extremely rare.
I took 4 T-34/85s and one SU 152 for armor plus 3 57mm AT guns. Two T-34 survived till the end and two of those guns killed 4 MKIVs between them. Redeploying guns in the middle of a battle is tough but this time it worked. If the game had not gone deep into overtime, the end result would have been very different.
Stndrtnfhr Out!

My Stalins and 34/85's have been bitterly fighting for every inch of ground for most of the game in the face of fierce resistance by GAZ NZ's German gun-heavy defence. X's mark wrecked guns and tanks. The two ringed 34/85's are about to do a right hook..
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/Gazddd.gif
They hook around the main line of resistance in an attempt to break the deadlock and take out a Grille that has been shelling my Russian infantry..

Unable to break out of the sector in the face of Waleed's German infantry line in the trees to their front, I order two SU-100's to reverse (purple arrow) to the boathouse flag and safely sit out the remaining few turns.
But shock horror, they reverse straight into a German squad who somehow infiltrated from behind, he can hardly believe his luck and gleefully hurls a grenade bundle (visible in midair)
Inset- one is wrecked.

My Russians made two thrusts, both of which met with only limited success..
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/two-enda.png
I was much too cautious here in the coastal village sector, inching through the streets at snails pace demolishing it house by house, expecting a German armoured counterattack to come in any minute, but 205 fooled me by attacking in the forest instead.
(X= destroyed gun. The T-34 at bottom bogged and immobilised in the shallows)

Major Battle in the Forest.
At first my Russian infantry met with only token resistance (x's=destroyed German units) and swept confidently through the flag outpost with their jubilant eyes set firmly upon the rich prize of the airfield in background..
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/two-endc.gif
Heavy contact! The Russians encounter 205's main line of resistance and are stopped in their tracks as a hail of lead rips through the trees shredding the foliage and upsetting nesting birds..
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/two-endd.gif
1- A schreck opens up on my T-34/85 and armoured car, while at the same time the ominous sound of approaching tank engines is heard at 2 (it turned out to be a Panther).
3- I reverse my T-34 and car away from the schreck.
4- I pull my men back to defend the flag outpost while telling them- "sorry boys, we just lost the airfield".
5- This Russian group are pinned by heavy small-arms and MG fire from across the clearing and I'm unable to extricate them..

The endgame screen; despite all my efforts the flag stays neutral..

Endgame view from the German side with arrows indicating 205's main counterattack thrusts that ended Russian hopes of conquest and guaranteed him a triumphant victory in this, his 200th Gamesquad game..

I've decided not to go ahead with the rematch since you indicated you were going to use the score on the ongoing ladder, which wasn't my intent. I understood the rationale about not having the score of the rematch eligible for the contest, which was also not my intent.
Also, I'm off on vacation tomorrow for a few days so my time is limited. And, now that the next tournament has been announced, if I'm considered eligible to participate in that one, our time is probably better spent doing that rather than rehashing this fight for the 17th time. Unless there is something really important at stake or any great reason for doing so that I am unaware of; I was curious to see how a conventional German setup might do, but not really all that curious and I think my question would be well answered by the Green Light parameters you've proposed.

As the reversing Hetzer calls it a day, the Russians storm the position with a Company Commander leading from the front..

Mangus's halftracks are stopped by MG, note the MG34's tracer, this halftrack actually blew up!
This is worth posting as tactical confirmation that some MG's in CM can make mincemeat of some halftracks..
It took several bursts over a turn or two, but the MG did it eventually.
Incidentally these halftracks were the weak M5 version, whereas the M5A1 with the shield around the gunner last much longer.

Okay I've just created the Perimeter cyber-medal (below), it'll be pinned to each competitors player stats at Blitz (if they're members and if they finish their game) because I only know how to do it there as I'm Tourney Manager with access to the back office coding.
If the Gamesquad or other clubs mods can pin it to your stats in other clubs, go ahead, everybody who signed up for Perimeter is awarded it, win or lose provided they finish the game..;)
(PS- just for the record I include pics of the other 4 medals won by all competitors in my other 4 tourneys over the past year, for example Bert Blitzkrieg entered all 5 and has got all 5 medals in his Blitz stats..:)

Now that the tourney is winding down I have some questions regarding the forces etc.
1. What was the force mix that was most likely to win this one, obviously it was a German one, but what combinations proved most decisive.
2. What tactical approach in your opinion lead to the best results overall. Was it the big Tank group or the looser approach?
3. What units did the most damage, infantry, armour or other?
4. Why did the Soviets fair so badly and what in your opinion was the reasons for their disparaging performance?
Seeing as you played in all of the games I think a quick precis with some insights may be a good help for guys that may want to improve their QB force picks for the future as I'm sure there are some excellent learning points in any debrief that you care to give.
Cheers
I second that request. :D
From a distance, it would seem that the best mix for the Germans was infantry with plenty of shreks and AT gun support, with a bit of a mobile armoured "fire brigade". The Russian armour couldn't win by itself.

As to #1 and #4, players just had to have faith that POS would stick to his preferred force mix and purchase accordingly - as the Germans.
Tripps is in the process of proving that with a different force mix the Russians are very capable of achieving at least a draw. See the live AAR that he is doing in his battle with ER Chaser. ER is using the same units & tactics he did in his Major Victory as Germans against POS in the tourney.

Agreed, but perhaps his opponents had some insights they would care to share. There's 25 or so people on that list that played against him. I started an AAR thread in the AAR section but haven't had time to do much with it; however, there is nothing stopping anyone from waxing eloquent here on how their game went, or talking about some finer points of tactics.
Basically, I was disappointed, speaking for myself. After reading all the raving about his tactical prowess, I was very much aware that he was simply playing like a "ladder player", and a sloppy one at that. I really don't feel I learned a single thing, except perhaps the advantage of hiding SMG troops in woods just behind the objective. As for actual tactics, there was nothing of note to learn from our playthrough that wasn't already self-evident.
In terms of Spike being a "sloppy" player, I venture that anyone playing about 20 games at once of the same scenario is going to get a little vague on what is happening in which. I wouldn't judge Mick on that, when in a specific one on one game that he could devote some attention to, he might be a lot better.
BTW I note that Spike has made and awarded Perimeter "medals" to people from the Blitz that participated....but seems to have forsaken the actual tourney thread here.

This tourny was a little different from POS. It is essentially a Russian attack/assault at even odds. The Reds have a much more difficult fight to win than the Germans.
The "secret" to my success as the Reds, is no secret at all. Combined Arms and maneuver win the day almost without exception. It takes the combination of mortars, arty, AT guns, tanks and infantry to win. The trick is to pick the right combination and apply them so your opponent has a tough time countering. Evaluating the terrain is essential to making the right picks. In our game POS took 10 MkIVs. Too much armor, to win in that terrain. I took only 5 and two survived, verses only 1 survivor for POS. None of this is new, but sometimes we all need to be reminded, myself included.
The only advantage the Reds have is that they can pick the objectives while the German has to defend all. Just to stir the pot, I would say that I won this tourney as I took the challenge of playing the Reds in an attack/assault at even odds and had the highest score against POS. ;)

I've been saying all along that playing the Russians and playing the Germans is quite different, and the two should be judged separately. It's why I divide the two in my own update screen.
Like JDSU says, however, it helps considerably in that POS is a predictable force picker...he goes armour heavy, all the time, every time. Combined arms will beat it four times out of five.

Endgame shot- In the marshes sector my Russians seized the flag but all the tanks and halftracks were subsequently wrecked and the flag reverted to German possession.(The halftracks were very flimsy, HMG bursts got some of them). 3 x T-34's broke through to the airfield but were wrecked and can be seen littering the runway in background..

COMBAT FOOTAGE- hills
Der Kuenstler's Germans have garrisoned this key wood which guards the approach to the flag in background; my T-34's can't see deeply enough into the trees to engage them so i send in a massive infantry attack to flush them out..

COMBAT FOOTAGE- hills
Der Kuenstler's gun goes on a killing spree, knocking out these 2 x T-34's in quick succession, while his infantry slaughter my Russian infantry wave.
The gun was engaged by the tanks and some infantry but still kept on firing while no doubt shouting to his mates- "hey kameraden, i'll show you how to win the Iron Cross!"
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/dkqqq.gif
---------------------------------------------------------
COMBAT FOOTAGE- marshes
After capturing the marshes outpost at bott left, I wheel my T-34/85's into line astern formation for an attack on the richest prize on the map- Der Kuenstler's airfield..
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/dka.gif
But before I can move off he launches a spoiling attack with a fusillade of schrecks and fausts (red fire lanes) killing two T-34's and making the rest mill around in confusion. Only the T-34 leader gets through and finds himself alone at the tip of the arrow, frantically radioing "where are my comrades?"
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/dkb.gif
The punch-drunk T-34's turrets swing like crazy looking for whoever's firing at them..
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/dkc.gif
--------------------------------------------------------
COMBAT FOOTAGE- airfield
Der Kuenstler's German squad punishes my T-34 for breaking the first rule in the tank driver's handbook-"Never drive within 40metres (grenade-throwing range) of any terrain that could be concealing enemy infantry"
(Okay i'll take the rap for driving them too close but my excuse is they'd been under schreck attack from behind in the previous turn and I was racing them down the runway to get away in a hurry..)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub3/dk-gren.gif
--------------------------------------------------------------------
COMBAT FOOTAGE- hills
At last I'm able to silence Der Kuenstler's troublesome gun, just look at the havoc its been wreaking against my T-34's..
My last 2 T-34's can't see it (and it can't see them) because of intervening smoke from burning wrecks, so I use the well-known tactic of area-firing into the ground next to the gun, and the blast knocks it out.
(Note the blank panel (white circle) in its datastrip, that's how we know if a gun or infantry unit is kaput)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Competitons/area-fvgun.gif
-------------------------------------------------------------------
COMBAT FOOTAGE- airfield
With this battle in overtime I play my final card against the main flag by sending 2 x T-34's to establish a presence near it to hopefully at least turn it neutral, I kept them in the centre of the runway out of grenade range but Der Kuenstler's invisible schrecks/fausts mercilessly cut them down. (The third T-34 in flames further down the runway was brewed by a grenade a few turns previously)

Tourney ended June 30th 2008
(4 players didn't beat the finish deadline, one of the games is still ongoing but the final result won't count for the tourney. The other 3 vanished for various reasons)
Note- All competitors who are members of the Blitz club will find the Perimeter cyber-medal in their player stats over there, plus 50 bonus Blitz ladder points (100 for winner Der Kuenstler)
I've organised 5 Tourneys over the past year and every competitor gets a cyber-medal at Blitz as below
