The more I play this Sins, the more I come to dislike the diplomacy system. In fact, I would almost go so far as to say it isn't a diplomacy system at all. It's more like an extortion system for players to make unreasonable demands of each other in order to feel better about themselves when they launch that upcoming invasion.
Honestly folks, this system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Sins is supposed to be an empire building game along the lines of Civilization, not a pure combat game like Supreme Commander. Yet the diplomatic options available to the player border on the ridiculous.
Here's an example: The AI demands that I go attack some empire all the way on the opposite side of the galaxy that I've never even seen before or else I risk reprisal. And theyre benevelent enough to grant me, say, all of a few minutes to carry out this ridiculous threat. WTF? Please, whose bright idea was this design? :hmmm:
AI opponents can make all sorts of demands, yet the only way the player has to respond is A) acquiescing to the demands and licking some serious boot, or B) doing nothing. What kind of diplomacy system is that supposed to simulate?
I could go into more detail here, but it should be clear to anyone who's ever played a game like Civilization or Alpha Centauri how poorly Sins fares by comparison in this area. This system won't be salvaged by simply adding a few tweaks, it needs a wholesale makeover.
