Hello,

Steel Panthers 3 stock SSI version was the first Steel Panthers game I ever played.I bought it in nov 1998 for $US19.99.
I thought it was the best wargame I'd ever played to that point. It was so cool to have the equipment be actual military hardware and personal from around the world.
I was a member of the Cases Ladder for Steel Panthers back in 1999 and played alot of Steel Panthers 3 :Online 1.0 in those days.

__________________________________________________ _____

I seek person or person's who will play a few games of Steel Panthers 3 :Online.
But wait,it wont be stock,I will burn a pair of CD's and send them anywhere in the world for anyone who wants to play the game.
The first CD will be the SP3 :Online game itself.
The second CD will be all the modifications that will be applied to the original game.Remember SP3:Online is completely windows friendly.I mean it's not a dos game.

The CD will include upgraded OOB's by various people I've collected over the years, these will include OOB's from an SP3 mod (the best one) called Moderna. So there will actually be two sets of OOB's that players can use.
Also included are better pic's,shp's,and sounds.

There are a couple horrible bugs in this game, for example anti air fire doesnt fire at air mobile helo's/this was usually not allowed(no air mobile)in ladder games.
Also there are times when one of your units is killed but it doesnt die,but stayes movable on map rated at (O),but enemy units cant kill it.
So the few times this happened the unit becomes dead and the owning player isnt allowed to move the unit after that point.

The games can be saved and reloaded so dont worry about having to sit in front of the PC for 6 hours straight (like I used to) to complete the game.

Respond to this post if it interests you.

I have a buddy's clunker here just so I could install 98SE just so I could play SPWW2, SPMBT and SP3 without having to get clever with my XP using main system.

SPWW2 and SPMBT run fine on it, but it doesn't like my SP3 now.

Oh the lamenting :)

ERRRR it runs on XP, but the mouse movement is enough to drive me to drink.

Yes yes yes I know SP Cammo has a page aaaaaaall about these issues.
Yes heard about this program and that program.

Heard them all.

You say you have a cd that has a windows friendly SP3? I'm all ears.

XP friendly too, no annoying mouse controls?

I have a basic out of the box SP3, and I even have the online manual (well they call it online manual, I think they meant electronic copy myself).

But it ain't Windows friendly (to my knowledge it runs, but it's hardly XP friendly).

I sure am interested to hear your comments on this though.

Les,Only the Online Version SP3 Online 1.0 is win 95,every other sp3 game is dos based. You can only play this version online TCP/ip against players live, there is no email support.
Your thinking of the traditional SP3 Game.

Does the SP3 Online version have any solo application, ie can it be played sans online usage?

Not that it matters entirely.

And further, if it's Win 95 based, is it compatible with XP.

And Lastly, if yes to any of that, want to swap your cd offer for mine? :)

I have never had access to the online permutation, and would like to have it.

Aries,Temujin,anybody else interested,

I had mailed you a copy of SP3/SP3 Online maybe 10-11 months ago.

Did you find it to run ok (especially win XP)?

I'm going to mail you both the upgrades disk when I get it done if you would still like to try it online.

__________________________________________________ ____________
As I just learned that there will not ever in my lifetime be a version of Win SPMBT that is TCP-IP compatable,

I have begun to look seriously into the mofified KOB (OOB) files
that I have to find the ultimate combo of files.

I have sadly resigned myself to the fact that this is it as far as modern SP based warfare on the internet.
I would have prefered that Win SPMBT was TCP-IP compatable,or that Matrix had actually delivered with SP-Modern Warfare.

Ah well such is the state of this cyber combat.
__________________________________________________ _____________

I think alot of people are intimadated by playing SP online.
The thrill of playing this game is much elevated over playing
by email. Email takes to long dammit. Sure its fun, but it really doesnt come any where near as close to simulating cyber combat as playing online does. In an online envoirment you must think and think now. If your plans succede or fail against your opponent you see it all happen right in front of you.
Plenty of times I ran out of time and was not able to move several pieces because I was to slow. You learn from this and become velocitized to the new level of playing.
Turn lengths are adjustable as well. But the norm back in the online day (1999) was about 4 minutes per turn.

In all fairness to matrix I was just reading an interview with one of the matrix programmers here at this web site. That(Combat Leader) is certainly the future of the SP based (clone) online internet warfare. I understand that up to 6 players can play in one game at once. The graphics will move the type of game into the future.

On the down side,I equate it, the modernizing of combat leader to the US led coilition getting the Iraqi's to provide thier own security and stop the sunni rebellion.
In other words along time coming...

My offer for sending copies of this game (SP3-Online 1.0)
is still open. Rather than wallow in sorrow I'd like to ignite
some renewed interest in this.

Hi there,

Yes it is a different product other than Steel Panthers 3.
It was only included in the final release of Steel Panthers 3 by SSI called the Steel Panthers Arsenal Pack.
It included SP1 complete with all updates,SP2 complete with all updates, and SP3 complete with all updates. Meaning the final patched version as well as all the scenerios they released.
On the Steel Panthers 3 disc,a new game, completely windows friendly, was included. This was Steel Panthers 3-Online 1.0
It is currently the only way to play a modern SP battle online, meaning post ww2.
Matrix's SPWAW does have it as well, being based upon SP3 itself
but it of course is rather limited in years availible.
I wouldnt mind playing a few games of that either as it is equally as fun.

The KOB files (OOB) included in SP3 Online were very basic ,but people over the years made many better updated KOB files as well as others that make it more interesting.
But like SP3 you have all those countries to use from 1939-1999.

So if somebody wants it I just copy one of my SP3 Arsenal discs and send it out.I've begun working in earnest, after slacking in earnest, on the update disc that will upgrade many files.

The Win XP question is one I hope Aries or Temujin can answer.
I have only used it on win 95/98se.

I too have the Arsenal SP3. It wasn't that long ago that I went online to play a game of SP3 at M-Player.com

I tried to get the site before posting but ended up at an Italian site. Then the search got misdirected to a media player list !!

Guess not so long ago is really a long time ago in internet terms.

Well would you be interested in trying a game or 10 when I get my act together and mail you the updated files disk?

I have new kob files, new shp files, new pics, new sounds that can be added in to make it better.
Just need to sort through them all and see which ones are the best (kobs, sounds)
We will both need the updated kob files to play gainst each other.
Its not a problem if we need to break the game up over several sittings. As I remember it was a good 5-7 hour venture to play an online game including unit purchase and set up.

Hello Skirmisher.
Actually, I don't have an internet line.
I hope to someday but even when it becomes a possiblity I am worried that I may get very little homework done since I would be accessible more often for a quick turn return as opposed to the next day rate.

Of course once I do expect me to pay you a visit for a game of SP3 and even WAW.
I have not found M-Player yet; my searches don't take me to it any more.
i will try again later.
Of course if we were to play a shorter game I could probably go to an internet cafe and play online there.
But it would be $ & cents on my end that limit such behaviour.

Steel Panthers 3 Online is no longer played at MPlayer.com,
that was availible back when the Arsenal pack was first released.
I used to be heavily involved there back then (1999)

You were able to download the online version from them as well. The world since has moved on.

It used to be great, people from all over assembled in the SP3Online chatroom and set up various contests using the online game. 2-4 people can play at once.

Skirmisher
15 Feb 05, 16:59
That is the entire sp3online directory as presented on that sp3 arsenal disc,it includes the set up program, etc.

So I would just email the entire directory I guess.

No,you do not need SP3 to play it. It is a complete self contained game in its on right. Also the only windows game of the original SP games.

You can play TCP-IP games or it was also set up to play on MPLayer.com(but that never really worked correctly),even back then people just played TCP-IP games.

If you read the interview you have with David Heath from Matrix,he actually coded it or helped code it.He had stated that he was working on multiplayer version of steel panthers, this is the only one that exsists from those SSI days.

SPWAW is the only other SP game that works online, though I didnt really have alot of success with that online beyond version SPWAW 4.5.

Yeah I am interested. I have been away from Steel Panthers a while, but Steel Panthers will always enjoy favoured status in my wargaming universe heheh.

Get in touch with me via PM and we can look into what you need to get me whatever updates I require.

I might have some return favours open :)

Just jumping in on this one....

Now, any chance of the files.... :)

Aries,
Do you use SP3Online under WIN XP?

Does changing the file attributes help?

[file attributes vary from: read only to archive to hidden]

as well in folder options you can set your windows show hidden files as well .. one of these sometimes prevents CDR's from burning until they are made visible and either removed or deleted [ some programs create files that prevent successful deletion or moving or copying so in this case you would have an icon that is consistent with a program that has been file associated with it ].

When I get home I'll look at my SP-3Online Arsenal disk and see if my current ATI video drivers allow XP to run.
If so, these cards are now at most $50Canadian and have 128megs ..

Gus,

Did that arsenal disc run under XP?
:) I am back. [library closed before we finished the posts last nite]

Yeah I put my SP3 back on the HD while in WinXP and it ran.
I also installed the SP3 Online files and this opened as well.
I did not install the M-Player.com files since I do not have an internet connection.
I checked as well the editor for both Online mode and regular SP3 mode.
The scenario editor does come up although I read somewhere this morning in the MBT/WW2 or the SP3 guide that for some cases the scenario editor will not run on some computers ..
I also reread the documentation on the VESA-WinDos enviroment. They mentioned a specific card that was up dated for XP failing to run in VESA.
It was a Ge-440.

Will you need me to work on the game files you were mentioning .. or was it resolveable in regular SP3 ...

I got SP3 to work in my WinXPpro that is not Service pack fixed.
I did as well dload while at the library the Windows direct-x 9 drivers.
I used the version 9c ones in fact.
I also got my SP2 to work under WinXP as well.

My graphics card is an ATI-Radeon 9200SE [128meg] for AGP not PCI.[cards have different shapes and AGP is recent while PCI is the older tech [for those who don't know what an Accelerated Graphics Port is].
It is quite a cheap model now that time has passed.
I also have as ASUS board which did not come with XP drivers for its on-board hardware.

Well thats good news at least I can send discs to opponents and they can run it on XP if need be.

The scenerio editor comes up but as of yet it wont save any map.

So the regular Sp3 editor may have to be used instead.

I guess posting it on a website is out of the question, because the proper way to install it is from the disc.

Oh well you cant win them all.

I forgot Skirmisher .. I have my CDROMs set to autoplay.
I couldn't tell from your post if you were installing from the pop-up screen or from the CD itself.
I assume there isn't any difference but began to wonder.

On this pop-up I get 3 install selections ...
>SP3
>SP3 Online
>M-Player.com internet communications package [to connect to their servers back then ..]

let me know.

Way, way back then I remember reading that the scenarios that work for the online have a different name.[forgot to check this morning, I'll do it shortly and write back this evening]...as well that these scens that come with the game were especially selected to cut down on file space requirements...'95 is a long time ago and I guess the drives were smaller then.
But I also remember that you could select from the regular scens to play online or edit them !! however to edit them you had to take them back into the SP3 game folders and work on them there.. then you had to send a copy to your opponent so that he also had one
1)his online root directory
2)in his SP3 directory depending on which method was going to be used.

>its been awhile so which idea did I get wrong that doesn't hold up.

gotta run to the bank and won't be on again till tonite or tommorrow.

As earlier posts attest,it works on win XP quite easily.

So if your interested in playing, send me your mailing address and you'll get one. I only ask that you play some SP3 Online.

The SP3-Moderna MOD KOB files seem to be the best overall OOB package to replace the lame SSI standard's.
