Suma was intercepted by a Russian raiding force consisting of the Protected cruiser Boyarin, the Auxillary cruiser Angara, and ten destroyers, in a night battle. She immediately engaged the the Angara, and scored many hits, starting a large fire on the forward area of the ship, Suma then engaged the Boyarin hitting her and starting fires on her decks.
Suma then switched fire to the enemy destroyers to keep them at bay, then re engaged the Angara, at this time the enemy ship was hit and blew up in a large fire ball, such was the ferocity of the blast the vessal was seen to heel over to her port side and sink in less than 30 seconds, Suma then turned her attention back to Boyarin, hitting her again and again, but by this time the ship was showing the signs of the battle, as fires burned along her decks, and her speed was reduced, at this point she was hit by a torpedo, and lost more headway, the enemy destroyers attacked her, putting 2 more torpedos in to her, this doomed the gallant ship.
However she turned on her attackers disabling one and sinking another, before succumbing to her damage and sinking.
