Ooh, ooh,...I do, I do...

I have been kicking around a few scenarios with Mt. Carmel Hill. I have been creating small, less than 400x400 maps, with units auto picked by the computer. I call them sprints. Games are 20 turns,, single objectives, and purchase points are less than 1,000. This allows quick completion, and the action starts almost immediately.

Shorter scenarios could allow for a longer (number of games) non-elimination tournament, for a lot of players, with total points earned determining the overall winner. So, conceivably, the overall winner might not win the most battles.

Matchups could start random, then rotate. One player could pick a map, while the opponent chooses sides. With forces varying on each map in every game, I think it can be very interesting. Even though players would not know what forces they would start with, they at least wuld have an idea of the field of battle (pre-defined maps), so that when they do get their forces, they can formulate a battle plan earlier in the process.

As slow as it is going, I am still working on my Six Battles of the Korland/Corland pocket in Latvia. The Google Earth maps for most of Latvia are very poor and I have not found any company level maps.

I am using Franz Kurowski's book, Bridgehead Kurland, as my main reference. I don't think much of his style of writing. The English version is not written in a flowing style, lots of jumping around. What is great about the book are personal accounts of battles and the number of tank losses. He has many operational maps from the era but they are of little help in constructing a CM map.

That said, there is an interesting battle I'd like to open with that I need better intel on. Here's an excerpt from the book: ...a new defensive front had to be formed in the line Svimpii - Dzelzgaleskrog - Metraine - Vartaja on 2 Nov. As a precautionary measure, both Dzeldas bridges were blown. I can find Vartaja but not Dzeldas. That would make for a good CM battle if I can pin this down. I'd just like it to be built from the actual terrain and not a composite of what the typical countryside appears to be. Anyone knowing what the Dzeldas (river or town) translates to would be a good help. I can order topo maps for most of Latvia in 1:25,000 which would work well where Google Earth fails. Mr Kurowski's names for towns are German translations which don't always lead you to the actual town. He missed the mark by not constructing his own detailed maps showing all the towns he lists by name.

The battles would begin in Oct-Nov 44 and end in Mar 45. There will be fall-winter-spring conditions. Most would initiate with heavy artillery barrages to open the games with plenty of opportunities for heavy tank battles.

The Arm Chair General Site has some Kurland maps:

Based on doing some looking around with Google, Dzeldas appears to be a proper English-language spelling of a place in Latvia. Lots of hits, every one of which but one appears to be essentially in Latvian... even the tourist sites!

However, one bit of English that showed up in a Google hit says:
...adding the Farm "Lankalni" (Dzeldas Village, Nikraces, Kuldigas District) to the list of establishments in Latvia approved for the purpose of importing fresh meat into the {European?} Community.
Other than that, I gleaned that its major points of interest appear to be a library and some sort of medical facility; all of this suggests it's really small...

Try searching on "Nikraces". One of the first sites listed in Google is some sort of tourist site that's more or less in English, and it says it has an "interactive map of Latvia". It seems to require Shockwave/Flash, which as a general rule I don't turn on for security reasons, so from there you're on your own. ;)

Huh. Now I just searched on "Lankalni", and the first site I came up with is the farm's own company website -- in English! Strangely, it says that the farm was established in 1993 "in a small village called Nikrace, Kuldiga District, Latvia". So I have no idea what the relationship is between the small village of Dzeldas and the small village of Nikrace... :crosseye:

Good luck with this project!

I did break through to the Lankalni Farm site, like you say in English! They are pushing their sausage to the world! :D I did run across an interactive map that has been good for find 'populated places'. But so far no Dzeldas. I may just drop the Farm an email and see if they can tell me anything.

I have also found some other info and maps of various areas starting with your leads!

Thanks for your help John!

Is there intrest in another scenario tournament?:hmmm:
It was easy to put together and I believe everyone enjoyed it.
This would be until we get some more technical map games researched and going.:toilet:

I have put feelers out to a couple of clubs for inter club tournies, but due to my computer up and down issues, I would like to clear that up first.:(
