View Full Version : Tournament Policy

Gentlemen, it is becoming clear to me that the new WFHQ policy on tournies is not perfectly clear to all of you, so I want to take this opportunity to remind people what exactly is is we're doing from now on, so no one is surprised in the event of a dropout.

First off, please rest assured, this is not a 'bad guys' list; none of us give a rat's behind whose name end up on this list!

It is a simple matter of history.

I'm not shy about giving people some verbage when they raise hell on the forums, but it's apparent to anyone who looks that I've been very lax about disciplining anyone that has dropped out of a tourney. (War in the West, anyone?)

I have received many emails complaining about this very thing, and I've already said once that from now on, we're going to go by the book on these things.

I'll stress it again:

Anyone who must withdraw from a tournament will contact the tournament coordinator and discuss the reasons, or will be forced to sit out for the next tournament.

There are no exceptions to the above.

I have already had one disturbing 'conversation' about this in a long string of emails, and that's not the kind of thing I signed on for.

To ensure that no one takes anything personally, please simply be advised; we will enforce the above rule on everyone!

For absolute clarity :

Where a member operates across several different wargames will the ban apply to the next tournament for the game in question, or the next for any game they participate on ?

Is it also the next 'applicable' tournament - e.g banning a 'Crack' player from a Rookies only tournament isn't exactly a penalty.

Otherwise the rule is fine by me.

Bans will only count towards the game in question; a CM tourney ban will not preclude a player from playing in a TOAW tourney, etc.

The next applicable tourney will count towards the ban, yes.

when do you consider it is a "drop out" and when do you consider it is a resign because there was nothing the player could do anymore?

Doesn't matter. Either you are forced to play it out to the bitter end or skip the next tourney. I can understand why this is necessary as just who arbitrates what is a lost cause and what could be redeemable.

That's exactly it. We needed a system where there was no judgement calls required on behalf of the person looking after things. If you sign on to play, be willing to finish the game, if at all possible under your current circumstances.

We have *no* issues with someone who gets activated, has a funeral out of town to attend, gets run over by a train, etc. That's one helluva good excuse!

But to simply drop the game because the situation looks grim/hopless can have adverse effects on the tourney. We want everyone to finish every game, if they can. A good example would be the player who can't advance to the next round, as he's 5 points shy of the cut... But if his opponent hadn't dropped out, it looked as if he would've got at least another 25...

Issues like that make it a difficult thing to manage without a blanket rule, so now we have one!

ok understood :)

Yup, nice to have a solid policy on this.

I think too many players sign up for tourneys impulsively, and when the going gets tough or it becomes incovenient, they just drop out and leave everyone hanging. And with no consequence...

Every tourney I've been in so far, players have evap'd right and left. Takes some of the fun out of it.

Good job, Mantis!

Actually - I'm curious about this! I don't expect to win every game - believe me I don't - I know RL issues exist - but even I learn from getting my ass
kicked! I think you should carry this across the various games ie why should someone unreliable in TOAW be considered a standout in Steel Panthers - because he wins more games?

While it's not a bad idea, it's a little outside of my scope. I moderate the entire board, but TOAW is the only section that I lead, and I wouldn't presume of telling the other section leaders how to run their tournies.

If you really feel strongly about this, you could bring it up on a few of the other boards, and see what the mods think.

Interestingly enough, I've received a similar message from one of the section heads, so we're off to have a round table in the staff forum.

Stay tuned, maybe we'll have a new board-wide policy in the making. I'll keep you all up to date!

But a committee has been formed to discuss creating a study group which will evaluate the need for a committee.

It seems my pizza sub-comittee is not concrete enough. OK more concrete: Hawaiian pizza sub-comittee (the Hungarian pizza is better, but you surely don't know it) :cheeky:

Do you like it with Canadian Bacon?
