Hi folks, I just got two CDs from my friend ---- he said he had only the EF gold and WF gold in his W@W collection (I thought there should be RS gold as well?) ---- and he was not interested, so passed them to me. whoho! Great, so I just tried them last night. Unfortunately, I had some difficulty in getting it running properly under my XP professional.
First, the help says, there is an "option" menu (BTW, I did not even ever see a menu bar in WF gold) which I can set up the video and sound options. But I could not find them. I just wanted to turn off the background music ----(which in fact is another problem) it is not playing normally, instead, it is repeating some annoying short noise again and again.
Second, when I choose "play a linked campaign", something weird happens, the menu boxes sometimes became all blank with only the frames (though I could still click on the buttons... though I do not know what the hell I was clicking on) and I cannot get it back to normal any more.
Third, when I try to start a game, it sometimes tells me that "...file content error" or something like that, but those scenarios were shown by itself, was my install incorrect? (I did not get any error msg upon installation.)
So I wonder if there is some kind of patch I should get for this "gold" version? (I searched here, could not find any) Or simply it does not go with XP?
Many thanks for your help, friends!
I'm running my EFII gold from W@W bundle on XP pro, and I haven't encountered any problems so far. The option menu should pop up if you press "M" (when you are in the game), the option to turn off background sounds and music are there.
I have yet to install RS and WF on this new system, so can't say yet for those two.

Thank you blade, but do you need any special settings in your XP as for EFII? I experienced another weird problem with WF ..(in fact, almost all Talonsoft's titles that I have) ---- the CD ROM ran like crazy during the beginning of the game, sometimes it lasts for over 30 mins. It does not make any sense to me. I doubt this would damage my CD drive, do you have the same problem? Actually ACOW caused this problem and probably damaged my older PC (with win98 and 32x CDROM pentium II 350)'s CD drive ( I do not know if it was because of ACOW or just aging ,but anyway, it forced the CD drive to run ridiculously long time and very annoying.). Another title from Talonsoft, the Jagged Alliance 2, also slightly had the problem, but it was much better since later I found out this one does not even really need a CD to run. (only for installation.) Now that I have a better PC (P4 1.8 with 52x CD drive, almost brand new), the CD drive was still forced to run for like 20-30 mins since the game starts. Should there be anything I set the system up specially for these games? Thank you.
I simply installed and played without tweaking anything. I know another friend running XP (don't know which version) who is playing EFII gold and RS gold, and I've never heard him complain.
There might be something wrong with CD instead perhaps?
Edit: No, cross that. I don't know.
I can play ACOW on XP without changing the compatibility settings either. The only problem I have is that the news and unit info windows tend to disappear on their own accord rather quickly. Other than that, no problems.
The game does seem to take a little longer to start up compared to when I used to run them on Win98SE

I had the same problem with the dialog popups in ACOW, very annoying esp. when reading the long scenario descriptions.
I tried "M" ... haha (I do not have the manual... any way to print out a manual for the game online? ) cool, it solves a lot of my problems. Yet still the file error thing is there, I guess I missed soemthing in setup or whatever. But let me first get started with the shootings... after I kicked the AI's butts for a few rounds, I can have fun with you guys here :)
Thank you, blade!
The manual is in the CD. Explore the CD to look for it.
Alternatively, you can download the manual at talonsoft site:
http://www.talonsoft.com/warroom/index.html
I think it's the World At War Manual. The bundle didn't come with a manual, so I had downloaded it. (I didn't notice it there in the CD too until much later lol)
Look forward to playing with ya. :)
