View Full Version : Map/Scenario Idea

I know I ain't the greatest map guy around. But I really like this community and I like how life has randomly been re-injected and I was thinking of kinda putting out an idea that was mulling about in my head for a while since I've been here.

I was thinking that we all can co-create 2 operational maps and or scenarios. One of each for CMBB and CMAK. The idea is to have you guys each make at least a block of your neighborhood on a map and then pass it on to the next guy. Then after each guy creates their homestead, they follow up with a small defending force of about a company size or so backed with support of any type. Everyone picks Allies or Axis with the Allies creating the CMAK Op/Scn and the Axis doing the CMBB Op/Scn. And when both are done, they are then passed around to the other group who will place the attacking forces and their reinforcements (same for the guys defending their homes hehe).

That's the general idea. If you guys like it and we get enough people, we can flesh it out a little more. I think it'd be fun and who doesn't like blowing up their rival's house:smoke:

I think it would be pretty cool too. I live on a riverbank in a fairly interesting historical neighborhood in this city. It would look good on a CM map.

too bad i have only CMBB :( but i can still participate right? ;P

Well if more people get into it. And I don't see why you can't participate?

Everyone would have to send in a Googlemap or Google Earth screen shot to judge just how well the map makers did. Can you mix desert and grasslands on the same map? Probably not. Very inventive idea!

kawaiku
06 Dec 07, 23:36
Haha yea, or to see who's closer lol. As for mixing... I honestly don't think you can do it. I usually get mad cuz I somehow make my grassy map turn to desert magically. Where do you live? Vegas...Reno? O and thanks. I personally like it (obviously lol) and think that the guys would. But we'll wait and see what happens.

In Fallon, about an hour east of Reno. We have 5 ac of high desert, with a deep agricultural ditch and some high ground to make defending interesting. You can't make out the elevations but I would be hoping the enemy was attacking from the top so I could set up a reverse slope defense.

I have updated the file, to include my house. I have also made some changes to increase armor mobility. Almost all of the street were lined with woods, making it impossible for vehicles to exit or enter a street, other than from another street. This added soem cross-country capabilities. There are some other changes, but I do not recall exactly what. Probably starting areas.

Google link (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=westerleigh,+new+york+city,+ny&ie=UTF8&ll=40.618285,-74.131418&spn=0.003657,0.007263&t=h&z=17&om=1)

You will note I needed to fudge a few things, since CMAK does not permit angles less than 45*.

Now you've done it Ed, downloaded my own Google Earth map of the neighborhood (1.5 mi x 1.0 mi). Far fewer houses but plenty of work ahead.

No green fields for the desert so I'm using grain. The irrigation drains are a lot bigger than real life too but what the heck.

Will start bringing in the elevations from Google Earth.

My place CMAK style, now with local elevations added in, from my neighbors looking SE:

Wow, that is a nice lookin place ya got there Bert!
Here's the aerial of mine:

My place is gated(all the dark buildings), and it very compact as you can see lol. To the SE, all those white thin "buildings" is actually a trailer park haha. Man this is gonna be really difficult:cheeky:

Kawaiku, you'll be making plenty of housing units to prepare that map.

Thanks for the pics guys. I am going to send the grids to the Air Force for JDAM testing!

Actually--I have thought of setting up my neighborhood as well. Very cool setup you did John.

Bertram
20 Dec 07, 21:52
Air Force???? JDAMs???? Those must be employed within 15 miles of the target.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k98/SZO_Bertram/NavalDefense.jpg?t=1198205251
You'll notice that 8 miles east of my house is NAS Fallon, home of Top Gun, Top Dome, and the Naval Strike and Warfare Center. There are a few SEALS hanging around too. The Air Force will not get anywhere close enough!!

Thanks! When I get it finished the next opponant on General of the Hill will find themselves attacking or defending my turf!!

You live in Walnut Creek right NL?:cheeky:

I do--right by Heather Farm Park. Anyone attacking my house would have to go through the park which I would turn into a death trap!

Who said they were going to go through the park?

Well here is a rough copy of my neighborhood in CMBB. It's about 1 km x 1 km. I'm going to try it in CMAK or more likely CM eto graphics. I live in what's known as the French quarter of the city so the architecture in the west maybe a lot more fitting although the heavy buildings in BB approximate the sturdy houses of 1930's and 40's vintage that dominate the area. I started out using the "peasant shacks" but somehow I doubt my proud French Canadian neighbors would approve lol.

BTW if anyone would be interested in having a QB on this, maybe a suburbs of Stalingrad, late fall type thing drop me a pm. we can figure an equitable way to edit the set up zones.

Whatever happened to this idea? Did Kawaiku give up on it just like the setup I sent him before Christmas? :p

I smell at new tournament here, THE HOME FRONT TOURNEY. Each contestant would have to build a model of their home turf. Combatants would be paired off, fighting on each map simultaneously. This could be single elimination, number of games, or round robin if not too big.

Who's interested?

Did you finish your place Bert? I sadly hadn't started mine :(
Was touching up a few scenarios I randomly created some time ago, and should start getting to mine... which, if done correctly, will be the Stalingrad across the pond :D

Just have to finish Google Earthing the elevations. Overall, about 90% complete.

If you're interested in making a map of your abode, Google Earth is the best and it's FREE! You can zoom in/out until you have the correct amount of space. GE has a few tools you can use to set borders and know how long they are. Then print it out as big as you can, I usually hit PrtScn and paste it into Power Point. I can print out whole 8.5 x 11 in sheets.

Now, knowing the width and heigth, you can draw grid lines every 100 meters in both directions. It's then pretty easy to build you neighborhood in the CM Editor. Finally, after getting the features right, you can go back to GE and get the elevations by just pointing the arrow. The editor can set elevations from 0 to 19 or 20 increments. The CM editor sets the change in elevation for each step in increments of 1.25m, 2.5m, or 5.0m. Look at your neighborhood elevations, get max low and max high, divide the difference by 20 and use the closest of the 3 choices. I am presently building the first map for Korland Battle #1, 3200m wide by 2800m deep. I built a table showing the true elevation for each CM editor step. 0 is 72m and 19 is 120m. You can't be perfect, so don't try. Try to make smooth transitions. Once trick for the roads: Make the road elevation and each side of the road elevation the same so it doesn't turn into an ATV course!:clown:

I probably live in one of the flattest places on earth so I didn't have to fiddle with any elevations to get a realistic map of my hood :clown:

Aye Carumba!! I didn't realized that making an intersection would be so darned hard:argh:. The Lower left intersection is a pain in the neck. I'm doing mine in CMBB btw. Okimawa, have you released you map/scenario?? I can't wait to see how long it takes to blow up your house :smoke: for revenge of the death of my men in our first meeting:cry:

O and here's a pic of my progress as of late:

My map is CMBB and its ready to go. I'm just debating about the flag location. Not sure if it would be best as an attack or ME. It's flat terrain, more or less dense urban, mostly houses, a couple of schools churches etc. Take a look and give me some feedback, there's a pic attached in my earlier post in this thread.
