Played EVE back in 2004. Sure it's vast,it's the best space MMORPG out there. Played for one summer.
Recruited by a corp called Dark Centauri, they were part of the FIX alliance. I found the people in the corp to be cold and unhelpful.
Was a new player, had the skill to operate Battlecruisers, yet the cost of these ships was staggering.
Many of the corp members thought I was a spy.
So there I was running around in a caldari cruiser(the one thats a missle boat). I had many ships destroyed in 0.0 space
Mining was boring.
Killing NPC pirates was fun for awhile, and doing combat missions, but even that became tiresome.
The question is,how are you people that like this game having fun in it over the long haul?

I don't entirely disagree with your sentiments. EVE, for me, is a game to jump into and out of as the mood waxes and wanes. When it comes to adventuring in a sci-fi future, EVE really cannot be beat. But as you point out, over the long haul, EVE can be a grind, albeit a fascinating one.
I also agree about the attitude of many of the seasoned vets. They have a very low opinion of newbs. I don't even like to use the 'help' channel all the often because my questions are just as likely to be contemptously dismissed as answered by some of the more experienced players.
It's like I said earlier: EVE is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

That's a phenomenon which is hardly unique to the EVE community. Many, if not most, games that engender a large and loyal fan base that lasts for years seem to suffer from this same condition. Just bear in mind that for every one of these noisy, self-appointed high priests of the virtual cloth, there are many more experienced and friendly gamers who are more than happy to help beginners and welcome new players into the community.
So don't let a bad experience with a handful of knuckleheads ruin your gaming experience.
To echo Don's comment:
My son has been playing EVE for a long, long time and is a trainer of newbies for one of the corps. He absolutely loves helping the new players get up to speed and involved in the whole EVE deal. He has 3 screens running at the same time- so I guess he really enjoys it!
I don't play EVE it bores me to death just watching "nothing" happen for hours and hours, but the fights I have seen are entertaining.

I've been playing EvE for a while now and I find that for me, the largest appeal, is being able to define your own criteria for success and fun.
Yes, mining takes time ... but is profitable.
Yes, mission running can get repetative even as the levels increase.
Yes, it is not a "twitch" MMO ... it's more of a career option.
Basically, if you need immediate feedback and gratification, EvE is not for you. However, if your thing is long range planning, stategic thinking and long term goals ... EvE may be your cup of tea.
Personally, I love it.
If you are not being helped by your Corpmates ... you are in the wrong corp ... you can switch ...
In any case ... happy gaming.

Well, I finally started my 14 day trial last night. I went thru and finished the tutorial, and now I suddenly feel overwhelmed, lol.
I figure it's time for me to kill some pirates so I can buy a new ship. My question is, are there NPC vendors, or am I going to have to buy everything from players?
Also, either I wasn't paying attention, or the tutorial wasn't informative enough, but, what is an effecient way to travel between systems? Do I use the starmap?

Glad you are giving it a try. It is a completely unique game.
To answer your questions:
1) There are no NPC vendors to my knowledge (other than the free stuff automated agents give you). Everything you need to buy is actually being manufactured and sold by other players on the market. This is pretty cool when you think about. The types of merchandise and the pricing are all set by the free market as in the real world. Don't worry, the galactic market almost always has what your are looking for at a reasonable price. You might need to travel a bit to get a good deal, but hey, that's what we do in the real world, right?
2) The only way to travel is via the stargates. The galactic map is useful to plot your route, but traveling is ultimately accomplished from stargate to stargate. Usually, when you have some place to go, a right click on the destination will automatically plot the route there. Then it is just a matter of hitting the autopilot.
Hope this helps!

Thank you very much, that helps alot.
In EVE playing against NPC is boring at most.
It is a player driven game about politics, friends, enemies, help and betrayal.
EVE is about always playing close with other players,.. and killing them too.
Sadly most people can't understand that and live in empire space ratting like it is SCI-FI space-WOW or something.

Well i playing EVE now since 2006 and still enjoy it.
Keep in mind that killing NPC´s and make Missions ist not the Goal of the Game, it is more like your Work to get an income for your EVe Live, so i do kill NPC´s just as much as i need to get my Stuff paid.
The other Part of EVE for me is the Role playing Aspect, and being part of something that gets recognized by the rest of the EVE Universe.
As i was relative new to EVe and my Corp went to 0.0 (Fade was my first 0.0 home) there where names like D2 and BOB but also other great Alliances with huge Names and i showed up to them like They where GODs of EVE ruling this 0.0 Empires mobilizing hundreds of players and waxing Billions of ISK in just 1 Battle, now i am myself in the middle of such Organisations and to my surprise even in the leadership reign (not the TOP Hat of all but not a to small light even) and beeing part of something that changes the face of the 0.0 EVE Empires is the thing that makes the game so great now for me. Fighting with my Dreadnaught and other very Expensive ships and dont mind loosing them at all, because i have a goal worth it, makes much more thrill then bashing some helpless NPC´s.
Now in the end it is the Player with player versus other Players on a large scale that makes the fun for me.
As for the Newbies, well i like them and help em as much as i can, but keep in mind that most of us older players have seen a lot of newbies and spended a lot of time for helping them get in the boots just to see them vanish away with a certain ammount of Time. So now i just show a little closer to the ones who screaming for help and look if they might be worth the Time and effort to help em.
