I am wondering if there where any photos of the battle that survived.
If there where any Photos of the ships that made it back into port after the battle?
I think I saw a photo here that someone had of one of the Russian CA's that made it back to port after the Battle. But It may not have been from the Tsushima battle.

If anyone knows of any please let me know. I am working on building a video story of Tsushima and the aftermath.

I started this project after playing the game for as long as I have. I want to see what I can do with Real Photos of the ships , and with Clips of the game in battle action. The Clips of the game is not a issue ,but finding photos of the era this was in is not easy as I guess most know. Any help that you could give would be great.

In thinking about this it may be that photos of the ships or the type after a battle may have to be used. And if there is any access to Japanese sites on the battle, I have not found many that I can get around in for the Japanese , In English that is.

The Japanese created a photographic record of the ships they captured for study purposes. I've seen a few of the shots in various publications. I wouldn't be surprised if they're floating around the web also.

I have a book about the greatest Naval Battles. Theres a bunch of photos from the captured Russian ships shortly after Tsushima taken in harbours . But none from the actual battle.

Thanks for getting back to me, and taking the time to post.

Crinius do you have a scanner? and could I get you to scan in a few of the best pic's of the ships ? If you have the time it would be great. If you do not, do not worry about this as it is not a end of the world have to thing. I am just working on making a movie of the battle and game.

This post is a way I could see who here might have pictures of the ships that they had or know of a site where I could get them.

Thank you and anything that you can come up with is great.
If you can not find anyway to do this it is ok, and do not use up
your free time doing this. I know how fast your weekend and free time
goes away!

I don't have a scanner, either, so I just use my digital camera to take a photo of the page. Which is then effectively a scan :).

It usually takes several attempts to get the best image possible. To show a lot of detail or text, you have to use the close-up "flower" setting, and then you have to vary the angle so the flash doesn't glare on the page. All the while, you're holding the book open face-up on the floor with your feet. Because of this, you don't often get the page as flat as a scanner, and because of the flash issue, you're always getting an angled view of the page. But it works well enough for use as evidence in discussions ;).

I have an old book "Great Sea Battles" and one chapter deals with Tsushima and has a picture of the main Japanese line firing supposedly the fire shot of the battle. When I have time, I'll scan the photo in and post it here.

Thats exactly what came up to my mind. As Iam from Germany and its Saturday Night Iam taking the pics tomorrow.

Picture 1 shows the IJN firing first shoots at Tsushima

#2 - 6 shows the captured Oleg. Note the heavy damage dealt to her.

#7 shows the Mikasa in front followed by Shikishima, Fuji, Asahi, Kasuga and Nisshin, from left to right.

#8 shows the Hatsuse.

#9 Fuji (upper), Asama (lower)

I hope the quality is ok. If you want something in particular let me know and I will try to get a better picture.

These are great, just what I have been looking for. Any like this will do.
Also if I send you my email address would you email them to me. When I download them from image shack it does something to them that makes it where they can't be used. I do not know what ?
I guess you have to have an account from there to get to use the picks .
Let me know and I will send you the email if you can or have time.

Thanks

Thanks again Crinius as the pictures are great. There is a lot of detail in the pic's of the ships. It makes you wonder how some of them stayed afloat to make it back to port. But after reading about some of them the damage was great to the upper parts of the ships due to the type of shells the Japanese where using. But they did not cause a lot of damage to the hull below the water line.

Anyway it made me wonder how anyone survived on the upper part of the ship.

great work! thanks

is 2-6 really the Oleg? I think you mixed it up with Orel

the Oleg was a cruiser, and that ship's guns look rather big to me :lier:

2-6 is the Orel.

There are a couple of those pictures in the book that I have and it is the Orel after capture.

So the labels are wrong in the book for the ships?Or just the one ship.

I think the photos and descriptions other than 2-6 are correct. 2-6 is definitely the Orel.

Crinius, is the book that you got those photos called "Great Sea Battles" by Oliver Warner and discusses naval battles from 1571 to 1944? All of those photos look very familiar.

If so, I have that book somewhere but I just moved and everything including my books are still packed away in boxes.

I guess then thats a typo. Orel, Oleg is really close. The book I have is a German book which I got as a child in 1978 (my love for Naval history started really early eh :D) "Seeschlachten der Weltgeschichte" by William Koenig. Its from a German publisher, Persicope Verlag Hamburg. It starts with Trafalgar and ends with Leyte Gulf. There are even photos from the battle of the Manila Bay.
