View Full Version : Newbie Sign Up
Allright,
All of you feeling you need a bit o' practice and some assistance in learning/mastering the Art of War, sign up here! Give your name, prefered side, and how many turns you can do a week. We'll be using Road to Rimini for a scenario.
These workshop games should not be reported on the ladder. If two opponents agree beforehand to report it on the ladder, then that is acceptable. As well, reporting it as NON-RATED would also be acceptable.
As a Newbie/Learner/Padawan your duties will include:
*Playing the game on your assigned team against an assigned opponent
*Uploading save files for the Lieutenants to review so they can give you hint and tips, and let you knwo what you're doing right/wrong.
8th Army:
wolfpack1993 (4/week)
B-snafu (4/week)
Heldenkaiser (3-5/week)
Goliath (1-2/week)
Heldenkaiser (3-5/week)
10th Armee
RalphTrickey (4/week)
pasha (3-5/week)
Either:
Dan Murphy (murphstein) (3-5/week)
sapper32 (7/week)
Rickie (3-5/week)
robarrieta (1-2/week)
jjjeko (2/week)
olduvai (4-5/week)
Withdrawn
Shunwick (3-5/week)-Aug 17 (Comp problems)
I'll sign up as noob.
Depending on when it starts (got a little vacation planned 08/14 to 08/20) and my other pbem games--should possibly be able to have a turn per day or every other day. Either side is fine with me---would actually like to mirrow it to get tips on both defense & offense if that's possible.

We'll have you start on just one team, but if the other team ends up short a player, or a player on the other teams wants to mirror the game, you'll be able to play both sides.
So which side would you prefer to start on?

Veers,
I am definitely a NOOB and would love to get some direction and education in how to play better so sign me up.
I can do 1 turn per every 1-2 days at least. I would like to start as the Allies but if things open up to play both sides I am open to that too.
Thanks,

I prefer the allies (attack)--unless the teams get lopsided-then no problem with being one of Kesselring's(sp) boys.

I'm a newbie to PBEM. I should be able to do a turn every 1-2 days.
I know the basic rules pretty darn well:p, I've just been too busy to play much, except for a couple of games against Elmer, and a couple of PBEM games where I got handed my lunch.:paperbag:

Actually, I'm going to flip-flop. I'd rather play the British. I need some hints on defense. I feel like I'm getting slaughtered by Elmer at the moment.
It's figuring out what units to place in reserve, when to commit them, etc. that I'm still working on.

Heh heh. Well, do you want to be British or be on the defensive?
The German 10th Army is on the defensive in this scenario, while the British 8th Army is on the offensive, Ralph. :D

Hello!
I'm interested in taking part in the upcoming workshop. I have only a few games against the PO behind me. Given the choice, I would prefer the Brits in order to learn to attack :bite:. However, I'm happy with either side. I feel a bit tight on time (or maybe I have the wrong priorities :)), so I will only promise 1-2 moves per week if that's okay.

Well that is most unfotunate. I hope your troubles solve themselves.
If you get back soon enough you may still be able to get in on it.
Is it too late to sign up for this? I consider myself a newbie (even though I've played both TOAW I and TOAW II). I picked up Matrix's TOAW III a couple of months ago, but have been pretty busy with my daughters wedding, so havent played it much yet.
I'v never played TOAW in PBEM, so might need some help getting started. I could do 3-5 turns per week I imagine. And could play either side.
Let me know.

I'd like to sign up. Happy to play either side (or both) -- I can certainly use the experience in both attack and defense! Whoops -- forgot to add I should be good for 4-5 turns a week.
My apologies Veers & to anyone else running the workshop. I'm going to to withdrawl from the workshop. Iv'e agreed with some of my opponents (a few not from this board) who are not patching till the final version is out in a few weeks & want to continue the pbem games I've got going right now that are unpatched.

Well, that isn't really a problem if you don't want it to be. I would expect that you will not want to be the only one that wants to wait. If you want you can stick around and just be matched with against someone else who is wanting to wait till the official update to update.
Sounds good--I'll still be in as any side needed for that time.

I noticed that the match-ups are already set, but i would like to participate if you happen to get any more late entries.
I can play at least 4 turns a week, and have no preference to which side i play.
I thought I had signed up for this here as a remedial. I mentioned in email to matrix. Either side is cool with me.

Do you have the beta patch loaded up?
Currently everyone is matched up, so you'll be on the list to replace any drop-outs, or matched up aganst anyone else that comes on late.
Is it possible for me to play in the workshop or is it already to late for sign up?

Never too late. We'll see if Shawmut is still around to play you, otherwise (if he doesn't show in the next couple days) we'll match you up with the next late entry, whoever that may be. Or, if memory serves, General Staff was willing to take on a rookie...

Drakken,
While you're waiting for Veers to match you up, go here:
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43154
and follow along as "General Staff" walked the previous class of the newbies through 2 Weeks In Normandy, step by step, with saved game files. I found this extremely enlightening, and well worth a Sunday afternoon. Took a couple of times thru the first 3 turns to get the _why_ behind some of his first turn movements, but once you see how the game evolves, lots of anticipatory stuff becomes clearer.
Veers,
Rickie and I are now on Turn 8 and should finish this week; if you don't get any more sign-ups, I can play Drakken, if he's OK with an "almost virgin" opponent. I'd prefer taking the British side this time, but will defer to someone who beat Elmer in Korea...best I ever did was get nuked.

Well, truth be said, I didn't beat Elmer in Korea by annihilating its forces, but because of an event for Elmer hadn't succeeded in invading North Korea at all. In fact, Elmer had made a breakthrough on my left flank and was about to outflank me to Seoul with a new beachhead in Inchon. I had begun a strategic retreat to a new defensive line just south of the 38th parallel when I "suddenly" won. :p
I am also a PBEM virgin, and have the game only since last week. I am thus a newbiest with only a basic grasp of the gameplay.

Don't minimize your accomplishments, you did beat Elmer, and more importantly, you accomplished your (NK's) strategic objectives.
Once of the really cool things about TOAW is that it is NOT a "battle to the death" game, but one that requires you to plan and execute operations to achieve your strategic objective, as defined by the scenario designer.
In Korea 50-51 (your game and real life), getting 40 weeks into the war without the UN having restored the status quo ante *is* the definition of an NK victory. The UN wasn't going to fight forever, with the USSR a permanent member of the Security Council, and lack of visible progress by the US military would have the same home-front effects as it had 20 years later in Vietnam, or 50 years later in Iraq...

I wasn't playing the "Korea 50-51" scenario, but Panzer War's "Korea 50-53" v 1.2 scenario, whose map is little bigger and is quite a bit more substansive with 1 week/turn and possible 300 units if the Chineses and Russians intervene.
However, I understand what you mean. I did succeed in holding out the UN for a whole year, despite the UN having the initiative and beginning to retake terrain and harass my supply lines. The front held for months (except on the right flank of Taijun), even during the harsh winter. That said, I was wondering if the UN had an endless supply of new US units human waves to pitch against my lines. :surprise:
That said, I now understand the value of concentrating artillery units behind sensible areas set as tactical reserve to support any defence, and taking units in stabilized parts of the front to concentrate them elsewhere with the aim of either containing an enemy offensive or mounting a new offensive. It should have been obvious to me that the South Koreans on my left flank wouldn't be moving anytime soon, so I should have taken some NK infantry units, reshuffle them and bring them westward to meat up my front near Taijun, where the bulk of the fighting was happening.

Basically, use the forum feature that lets you print an entire thread (under thread tools), then download the SAL files GS uploaded with his posts.
You can then read about GS's choices per combat round, open the associated SAL file, and look at what he did, continue the game (as the Axis vs an Allied Elmer) on your own from that point, or try different choices than his and throw away the results.

Nick,
Yes, there's an Axis forum; you'll find my previous game vs Rickie in there, and lots of good material from Veers, Foggy and General Staff, but nobody else in this workshop has posted their game threads for some reason. <shrug>
Since the Allies go first, I'll play my first turn and when I'm done, the game will generate a PBL file (to be emailed) which I'll not be able to open, and a SAL file for the end of the turn, which I will (and will post with notes to the Allied forum).
I'll zip up the PBL file (to protect against corruption in transit) and email it to you.
You save the zip file from the email somewhere, extract the PBL, and open it with the game (PBEM instead of "new" or "open" or "exit" on first dialog window).
Have you upgraded to the current patch level? If not, that's an issue, as we all upgraded to v3.2.29.27 for this workshop. See other threads here for details.
When you open the first-turn PBL at your end, you'll be asked to create a password; each following PBL file will then ask for this password, so I can't open the PBL files I create for you, and vice versa.
Save a turn-start SAL file if you want (game exits). Re-open the SAL and play your turn. When you're done, the system will create a new PBL for me and end-of-turn SAL for you; send me the PBL file (zipped if possible, OK if not) and post the SAL to the Axis forum. Repeat until done.
I tend to name PBL files <player1>-<player2>-<scenario>-NNC, where NN is the turn number and C is either "a" or "b", since with variable initiative on, either of us might move first in a given turn.
I usually create a new folder under the Saves directory for each PBEM game, and keep my SALs, PBLs, sit-reps and notes there; when done, I just zip the whole thing up and put it in my archives.
Turn 1 is quick for the Allies, since most of my units start fixed in place. Look for it in your mailbox soon.
I'll be gone after this until tomorrow sometime; it took Rickie and I almost exactly a month to play our game, but we were both travelling in Sep and missed about 10 days of play-time as a result. I'm good for probably 3-4 turns a week, if reality doesn't intrude.
Any house-rules I need to know about playing the Allies? Do I get to enter the Allied private forum now... ;-)
I did enter the Axis forum as soon as my game as Allied ended ;) (though I won't communicate any findings outside of it :shy:)
Hi, as some of you know I'm Wyatt's better half, and since I've had my arse handed to me too many times on a silver platter by him in this game I've decided to improve (or actually learn) how to play this game.
I am terrible at playing defensively so I was wondering if anyone wanted to play against me as the allies? Preferably someone who is as brutual as I am, please.

As for coaching, the coaching se'll get from General Staff will be far better han any I can give her, as he realy is awesome at this game.

I just signed off as Allied commander, and would like to see it from the other side. If you don't find any Allied opponent, you have the option to play the Allies against me as a warm-up (and with those artillery assets, there sure is some potential for brutality :bite:).

I have done my best to teach her in the past. She can use the round system pretty well. Her main failing is with being able to create an operational (or even tactical sometimes ) plan.
Well - I can plan myself - the execution is the hard part:clown: The fact she can use many rounds - understanding the symbols etc. - should be quite a game;)
We should agree on any chocolate in advance - that way the winner
can enjoy the best!
Hello, I would like to take on both Goliath and Nemo, it'll be a challenge.
Nemo, you will have an email in your inbox stating my email address.
Goliath, I will send you my first turn today or tomorrow.
I will also start up a couple different threads and give you my word as a female :hurray: :salute:, that I will not be looking into your threads.
Great! I will PM you my email, and expect loads of armour soon
Preferably someone who is as brutal as I am, please.
Welcome aboard and prove all those damn "Male" how formidable you can be as opponent
All my best wishes flown by you

Since Drakken has arranged for private lessons, I'm free to start another R2R game if you still need an opponent for Sully. I'd prefer to play the Allied side, to see what I can learn on the aggressor side of the coin.

Alright, Sully, you have an opponent. Feel free to get into contact, lads, and then you can set up threads in the appropriate sub-forums.

Sully, send an email to murphstein at yahoo dot com and I'll send you an Allied Turn 1.
You should take a look at General Staff's thread describing a game as Axis against the PO; it's in the Axis private forum (where I used to dwell before switching sides). You might profit from looking at the other games threads posted there, both Road to Rimini and Two Weeks in Normandy (2WIN), last year's workshop scenario. A *LOT* of good info there about conducting defenses, counter-attacks, air strikes, etc.

Email sent. So now I just set up a subforum in the Axis folder? What happens after that?

After that you play your turn, post info about it and get advice.
I would like to play in the work shop. What wil i have to do? I play every side.
Cheers Joerg

Well, you'll have to wait for someone to post here that they're willing to give you a game, either a total newbie, or a relative newbie. That could take a few days. I'd suggest that during that wait you start going through the two sub-forums and readin up on what other players have already done, and when advice they've been given.
After you have an opponent, you'll want to start up your own thread in whichever sub-forum corresponds to your team (Either Allied or Axis). With that done, you'll be playing your game and then posting information about it so that you can get help and advice from the many veterans that are on the site willing to help out.
Hmmm...is there anyone willing to give Joerg a go?
Well, I certainly can squeeze in another Road to Rimini game. A PM is on Joerg's way.

Thanks Marc.
I would have brought this up sooner, but I forgot as was quite busy. hope Joerg is still around.
Hi!
I'm a total newbie willing to learn... i don't mind the side... i can play once a day maybe two (but there will be days when i cant play somtimes) I'm GMT +1....

Ok, if Joerg doesnt show, I have two vets willing to play and help you along. We'll give Jeorg three days and if he doesn't show by then, we'll assign you to one of the vets.
Until then, I suggest taking a stroll through some of the current games, in the sub-forums, to get some good hints, tips, and tricks.
Hi. I'd like to play. I don't care which side. I used to play this back when it was version 1. It's been quite a while, tho, so I would consider myself a newbie for sure.
P.S. I'm looking thru the other subforums now, to see what others have done/advice given.

Roger that.
Well, as the connection with Joerg dropped dead past the initial contact, I should be able to handle another Road to Rimini. Once Sparvin has finished perusing the sub-forums in here, I'll let him pick a side if he doesn't mind.
Sure, I don't mind. I'm still reading and "perusing", but I'm thinking I'd like to take the Axis to start with. I always feel more comfortable defending first and then exploiting if things go well. Thanx.
Oh, good job, Nemo. Enjoy SParvin. Learn what you can form this guy, he's rather good. :D

No problem - check your PMs for my email address and expect a turn within 24 hours.
Cheers,
Marc
How to enter game?
I can do 3-5 turns in a week...
I have the version TOAW3 with patch 3.2.29.27
I want to join also. I'm also fairly new to TOAW III.
Perfect two newbies to play against each other. :D
You lads might want to start by reading through some of the threads that have already been created to get an idea of the scenario.
After you have doen that, decide which one wants to play which side.
When that is decided, have the player playing the Brits start up a PBEM game, play the first turn, and send it to the German player.
As well, you can start up new threads, and post in them and get some great advice from our veterans.
Any questions, just ask.
Perfect two newbies to play against each other.
Good idea!
Mike T., we will have a good battle.
I propose you sent me letter on suncat at sibmail.com
and We will agree on conditions...
May be ICQ?

Give it a couple days, Jakalo, someone will take you on. In the meantime read the forums.

Ok, I`ll read :)
Does anyone have recent news of Sparvin per chance?
Who the bloody's Sparvin? Is that Jakalo?

We were on turn 4 of Road to Rimini, with me as Commonwealth. I'll wait and keep the game on hold for the time being - not an uncommon situation :halo:

Jakalo and I have agreed to a game of Crusader from the Classics section.
Since we are not playing a ladder game I have no problem with him playing it as a workshop game.
I have several games running now but have finished none. I'm pretty new myself. If Jakalo has not found an opponent yet sign me up as his opponent, We have chosen a scenario. I will send him a turn. Unless Jakalo doesn't want our game on this thread??
Old timer returning. Looking for a gentle or not so gentle reintroduction back into competitive TOAW...how do I sign up for games??? Can play multiple turns per day

You just signed up. If, in a few days, another newb does not offer you a game we'll throw a veteran at you to teach you the ropes. :D
Resigned up...used to play a bit back in 04...but lost my copy of TOAW, and now I am back playing TOAW3...and happy to be back
I'm a noob at this game and I would like to take advantage of this workshop.
Alright, two new newbies. SUggest you two pick sides and play each other.
Once you've decided who will play which side and started your game...
A) Read the sub-forums, see what others have done.
B) Create your own thread in each respective sub-forum; post your progress and questions and one of the vets will be happy to pop in an answer.
Sounds good Andy. I just need to figure out which scenario we play, and what the sides are. Axis and Allies I imagine. I'm open to any suggestion you have for a game but it should probably be a shorter rather than longer, more complicated one.
email = mfrowley at comcast dot net
You lads would be good to go with Road to Rimini, as then you can use the tips and tricks from the Axis and Allied sub-forums.
Very good. Thanks Veers.
If I want to play Axis who has to send the first turn?
Crikey...I remember having to learn how to do this 4 years ago...all I can remember is that its very easy
I'll try to send you a turn today Andy.
Having a nightmare trying to save the PBEM game onto my TOAW directory. I cannot find a PBEM folder in the main directory...I know I am being thick, but can anyone point me in the right direction??

By default, the game will save the PBEM and .sal files in C:\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War III\Saves.
That said, you can save PBEM files wherever you wish on your hard drive or create as many sub-folders as you deem necessary in the default Saves one.
Andy, I sent you an email essentially saying what nemo just pointed out.
The pbem files save as .pbl, the single player save files are .sal
If you have skype I can talk to you if you need any further help.

BTW good to see you on the TOAW forum, GS - it was a while since I saw you post here. What's with the nationality change?
I'll start Kharkov 42 w/anybody - Sproggy is first in line - well balanced both sides - pick one :)

There isn't one, though I'm of European origin. Just solidarity with my American compatriots as we head into probably the most important presidential election in a generation (bar the last one which the world lost).
Most folks have the good sense to vote in private and it's probably good sense to do the same with political opinions as not everyone is in solidarity with that sort of stuff.

Come now, doesn't everyone like a good political debate. :D
I'm game, but I'm not sure you want a gaming forum spammed up with what you know will be long winded, acrimonius, and ultimately pointless argument.
Plus someone wise once said it's smart not to discuss politics and religion. ;)

Count me in, I would like to be more involved and pick up a few PBEM games if possible.
Thanks,

At this point, what you should do is make an 'opponent wanted' thread for whatever scenario you want o play (Road to Rimini would be a good starter), and then post an AAR thread in the AAR section, and mention in the first post that you would love any help anyone can offer, as that will get you some veterans willing to asist and ad comments on your moves.
